Going through the motions

This story is borderline 2 stars. I love Percy Jackson. And Harry Potter. I have a minor in Latin. This book was written for me. Or maybe my children or nephews. I was really excited for it. Magic, and Roman History in the gritty setting of a Roman slave.

This book has none of that. The setting is Rome in name only. My first clue should have been how very un-Roman every body except Julius Caesars character is. And everything else is just as "phoned in." The action is ho hum till the end. I found myself caring very little for the main character and having almost no insight into what his world was really like. The main character is not much of a character. The bad guys are pretty vanilla. The setting might as well be 'generic' ancient times. The story is pretty generic too.

You really get the feeling that this story was written and rushed out to capitalize on the ending of the Percy Jackson series. Jennifer Nielsen is a very good author (or was in here previous novels) and this doesnt feel like her previous novels. The whole thing just feels so forgettable and like her heart wasn't in it. Such a let down for me personally. As a lover of the classics and fiction.

Realizing this novel is not aimed at me, I tried to get two kids to read this book. One nephew and one cousin. The guy was a 6th grader who's favorite subject is ancient history and incessantly buggering me (in the most lovable way possible) about Percy Jackson and Greek Gods and why are they different then Roman Gods, etc. He borrowed over its Christmas break and finished because his mom made him. He felt like it was a chore and didn't think it was Roman at all and tired to give it back early. My adorable 3rd grade cousin who loves childrens books like the Heir series, and HP, and Percy and she was able to get 1/4 of the way through it before moving on. So its just not me. Theres nothing terrible about this book, except maybe the unRoman Roman setting, but everything else is just un-compelling.

Needs some work.

This book had a lot of potential. I liked the story line, but the characters were underdeveloped and there was virtually no world building.
I am not a fan of books that are written in the first person for this very reason. It is harder to develop the characters. This means that you really don't get to know anyone very well other than NIc, the main protagonist. And even his character was all over the place.

I love a little magic in my books, but in this case, the magic just didn't work for me, because like the characters, it was all over the place and nothing really made sense. I really struggled with this book and it took me a very long time to read it because I just wasn't that interested.
The setting is in Ancient Rome, and you get a little history there, slavery, Kings, Julius Caesar, etc. but not enough to really make the book any better.

There is quite a bit of action in the book to keep you from getting too bored. I think this book would be good for younger readers who aren't concerned with things the way an adult would be, but things need to make sense, and magic has to have laws and consequences, and this book was just all over the place with it. And the only way you really knew you were in Rome, was when it was mentioned. It was never "shown". Show me, don't tell me!

An Adventurous Journey with a Worthy Cliffhanger in MARK OF THE THIEF

The treasonous General Radulf selects Nicolas (Nic) Calva, a slave in the mines south of Rome, to enter an accursed cave in search of Julius Caesar's bulla, a good luck pendant. Not only does Nic locate the bulla, but he also receives a mysterious marking on his back from Caela, a griffin that scratches him. Nick and Caela go to Rome, where he learns about the magic powers that come from the marking and the bulla, but the trip takes him further away from Livia, his enslaved younger sister.

Radulf intends to steal Nic's powers to overtake the notorious Praetors, so Nic goes into hiding while he continues to search for Livia. There’s also a deeper, magical connection between Radulf, Nic, and Livia --- one that Nic will do everything in his power to destroy.

New York Times best-selling author Jennifer A. Nielsen has once again keyed into her world of make believe to produce a fantastical tale, the first book in a new Praetor War series. Nielsen has created a host of characters tightly woven into Roman mythology and history. And while she includes a plethora of historical names, places and even terminology from that time period, Nielsen centers her first person narrative on Nic, an underdog who is constantly reminded of his lowly status amid powers that he neither expected to possess nor has any idea how to use. While the underdog-power combo is reminiscent of Harry Potter, Nic doesn't have the strong trio friendship that Harry has. Eventually though, Aurelia, who is an interesting character, to say the least, befriends Nic.

Nielsen throws in a handful of red herrings within her cast. Indeed, there are a handful of Jekyll-and-Hyde characters that make it is difficult to assess who is trustworthy and who is not. To add to the mix, Nielsen includes continual scene changes, which are both action-packed and un-hackneyed. Although Nielsen keeps her readers on their toes, they will be always cheering Nic on to win over evil. Full of adventure, MARK OF THE THIEF closes with a startling cliffhanger that will keep readers anxiously awaiting its sequel.

"The Arabs in History", according to Lewis's words in the Preface, is "not so much a history of the Arabs as an essay in interpretation...I have sought to isolate and examine...the place of the Arabs in human history, their achievement, and the salient characteristics of the several ages of their development." Lewis's interpretation is neither personal nor novel. Four-fifths of the book are devoted to the four centuries of greatness before the Arab world, already in decline, passed under Seljuk rule in the 11th century A.D.; and the period from the Ottoman conquest in 1517 to the recent present is compressed into 18 pages. Within these limits Lewis has admirably achieved his object, notably bringing out broad economic trends.

On the whole, Lewis follows the orthodox lines -- orthodox at the time he wrote it, at any rate -- in his interpretation, including the treatment of Muhammad and the rise of Islam, the caliphate and the Islamic empire, the Muslim civilization and its eclipse. The salient characteristics of the several ages of the development of the Arabs are emphasized but not their literary or scientific achievement. All in all, "The Arabs in History" is a readable and reliable work.

Decent intro to this part of the world

Bernard Lewis is probably one of the West's most recognizable and respected experts on the Middle East. Fluent in Arabic and having lived in various countries of the Middle East, he has written a plethora of books on this region for the western reader. THis is one of his more recent works, and provides a quick and digestable history of the Arab people; i.e. the people living in and around the Arabian peninsula

The book starts by examining the region before Islam. The pagan culture is examined, along with the local geography, climate, and economy. Next, the book shows how Islam came about thru Mohammed and his teachings, and how Islam came to be the predominant religion and social force in the region. The book then goes into the history of the Sunni-Shiite split, the growth of Islamic empires such as the Umayyads, Turks, etc. The book ends with the topic of Western influence in the region, and how this is affected by the Israel question and oil.

Overall, the book is fairly easy to read and serves as a good introduction to the region. It is suitable for students in college, high school, or adults, and can be picked up by anyone without prior knowledge of the region.

Great book for beginner to mid level Developers

This book may not be helpful for Architect and other highly experienced Developers. However, for others, this books is great. It basically teaches you how to be a good developer and write good code. Its text is clear, concise and practical to the tooth. You see how to shows you step-by-step on how to program the right way and does a great job at it.

As regards to the content, this book shows you how to use Test driven development in a real applications as opposed to showing you just theory or just lingering on principles. It also covers supporting topics like mocks and Object oriented development principles. It is one of the best development books I have read and I highly recommend it. I hope the authors comes out with more books.

It should be mandatory if you want to be a SERIOUS C# Developer

This is the kind of book that pays by itself on the first few pages. It's very well written and easy to follow. The Authors really knows how to approach the subject on a step-by-step basis. Highly recommended if you really want to deep dive into Test-Driven-Development, but the readers should be aware that some previous knowledge on C# Development and Design Patterns are required to really enjoy the book, otherwise you will miss most of the important concepts.

Before I read this book I did not know the benefits of TDD and how to execute it properly and it sounded to me like the next agile-scrum-XP hype. I am happy that I was not that sloppy to miss TDD and I am happy that I started with this book. These guys really have a sense for teaching. But why you may ask?
The book starts at very very slow pace - for a novice - and the examples looked to me a little bloated, but afterwards I got it right and I do not think they are anymore. The firsts chapter, which is an elaboration on the benefits of TDD is thorough and after reading it every developer should be convinced to use TDD in his developing process. But then the question is "How to do it properly rather then sloppy?". The answer comes with the introduction of the SOLID principles and refactoring in a way that they are very easy to remember and to use in practice which I think are in the core of TDD - "Red, Green, Refactor". Then comes Dependency Injection with ninject which was introduced very brightly for the novice. The next chapters go in faster pace but with the knowledge from the previous the material is easy comprehended.
The examples are near-real, very well thought and useful. This books combines in itself knowledge from a broad spectrum and makes really good foundation for any further study of Refactoring, DI, OOP design and Unit testing. The book make you see where is right place and the right time for every step - a really nice flow.
I rarely find such a useful book. I will say that it has very high text-to-read*quality-of-material/money-to-buy ratio. I recommend this book for novice programmers and for experienced which wants to start TDD the right way. It will be best if novice programmers are thought TDD in the rails of SCRUM from the start the way this book teaches. After reading this book I have decided to integrate teaching of TDD for our freshmen in the company so they start their work the right way, which for me is TDD in the rails of scrum.
That is not all that is important to notice about the book, but I have to stop. This book is worth the money. I will look for other books of these guys.
The book cries for second edition with more elaboration on the topics. You have done great job guys.

Excellent test prep

Definitely useful, especially to familiarize you with what exactly to expect from the test. The practice test definitely taught me a lot (such as "I know nothing about plants"), and the review material was great.

My only gripe is that there was only one test in the back of the book. Combined with the free practice test you can get off the GRE website, this gives you 2 practices. While that helps, I'd've liked (and would have gladly paid extra for) more, even just one more.

Worst than I expected

I used the second edition of this book to study for the biology GRE.
The book is ok if you want a general perspective. However, when you go into detail, the book simplifies to much and some things in the book are wrong.
Also, I purchased it mainly for the practice test, which I found was poorly constructed because the graphs were messy and the questions were ambiguous and some had the wrong answer marked as correct. The booklets from ETS are a better practice for the real thing.
I used a general biology book to study as well as this one, and the general biology book was much better.
