Letters to Kurt, by Eric Erlandson

"Nearly two decades after the death of Kurt Cobain, a friend and fellow musician not only continues to mourn his suicide, but also rages against the culture that he holds responsible. These 52 'letters' . . . combine the subject matter of the Byrds' 'So You Wanna Be a Rock and Roll Star' with the fury of Allen Ginsberg's Howl . . . A catharsis for the writer and perhaps for the reader as well."
--Kirkus Reviews

"A touching and enlightening collection of prose poems addressed to [Erlandson's] departed friend."
--The San Francisco Bay Guardian

"Erlandson finally comes to terms with his loss in 52 prose-poem letters ostensibly addressed to Cobain in which he straightforwardly confronts his inner demons while offering personal reflections on food, drug abuse, death, and self-sabotage."--Booklist

"The reverberations of Kurt's suicide last to this day, and have touched the lives of many. Dozens of people could have written their own version of this bracingly candid book; Eric Erlandson has written one, filled with rage and love, landmined with detail, that can stand for them all."
--Michael Azerrad, author of Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana

"Eric was the spirit-boy in the Nirvana/Hole dynamic. Quiet, bemused, intelligent, and curiously intuitive to the power of hugging the devil, to say we will all be okay . . . Eric expresses how enchanting Kurt was, how the whole scene was, with his thoughtful, radical adult/prose love. Bring on the future, darling."--Thurston Moore, musician

"Eric. He was always there: supportive, observing, in the thick of it. Hidden in plain sight . . . Without him, I can't imagine Seattle or L.A. or a dozen other places. This book is beautiful, brutal, brief. Happy-sad eloquence. Boy Scouts playing with the complimentary cologne in the heart of the ghost town. Listen to the man. He knows."
--Everett True, author of Nirvana: The Biography

Letters to Kurt is an anguished, angry, and tender meditation on the octane and ether of rock and roll and its many moons: sex, drugs, suicide, fame, and rage. It's part Dream Songs, part Bukowski, Ferlinghetti, Ginsberg, and the Clash. Rants, reflections, and gunshot fill these fifty-two prose poems. They are raw, funny, sad, and searching. This will make a beautiful book for anyone who loved Nirvana and Hole and the time and place when their music changed everything. Ultimately, it's an elegy for Kurt and the "suicide idols" who tragically fail to find salvation in their amazing music.

From Booklist
Erlandson is known as the cofounder, songwriter, and lead guitarist of the rock band Hole, but he has performed in the shadows of his more famous, and infamous, colleagues and friends, especially Kurt Cobain, the iconic lead singer of the premier grunge band, Nirvana, who committed suicide at the height of his fame, and Courtney Love, Erlandson’s former girlfriend and Hole bandmate. As it turns out, Hole released their debut album, Pretty on the Inside, a week before the release of Nirvana’s behemoth best-seller Nevermind. Within a month, notes Erlandson, Love and Cobain were a couple. From then on, Erlandson assumed “a sort of friend/caretaker role,” serving as both Cobain’s sounding board and morale booster even as he felt pangs of “subconscious jealousy.” In addition to Cobain, other friends and associates of Erlandson’s self-destructed during a relatively short period of time. Erlandson finally comes to terms with his loss in 52 prose-poem letters ostensibly addressed to Cobain, in which he straightforwardly confronts his inner demons while offering personal reflections on food, drug abuse, death, and self-sabotage. --June Sawyers

I love Hole and really admire anyone who could cowrite all of those great songs, especially from the pissed-off punk of Live Through This & the lighter but maybe even angrier Celebrity Skin. So, Bravo Eric Erlandson the songwriter/guitarist. Sadly, this book is by the less talented Eric Erlandson the prose writer, a person who seems to have a lot of ideas but no strong guide to give them form. Akashic, the publisher, did him no favors by allowing this book into print at this stage. There are things here that should never have made it into an adult's final draft of anything. For instance, raw yogurt upsets Erlandson's stomach, seitan makes him constipated (as do a long list of other foods), and Erlandson has hugged someone hard enough to be "at the risk of pooping" (111). Fascinating as all this might be to Erlandson's gastroenterologist, as his reader I'm not just uninterested but left wondering at the poverty of a mind that goes on and on about such things. Oh, also, he lets us in on ejaculating on some woman's stomach and giving another woman (the same woman?) three orgasms in one morning "by accident" (45). Yeah, I don't get that last one either.

The more interesting parts of Letters to Kurt are just uncomfortable. He trashes Courtney Love almost obsessively. She's too easy a target and the things he says seem more in place in a Kitty Kelley biography. Some of his musings on Kurt are interesting, many unintelligible. Once he verges on beautiful: "I found a picture of you back when your saddest days were the happy days of my life" (122).

Unfortunately much of the rest of the book is written like this: "My definite chief aim in life is to give a lecture at Harvard on the female anatomy as it relates to the benefits of adding nicotine to ice cream" (33). Here's a longer sample: "No, I didn't forget to turn out the lights. Maybe 'cause she's a missionary and I'm anal. Her post-partum to my pre-verbal. Keep confusing the tush for the bush. Spare ribs" (65). If Akashic had any integrity, they would have assigned Erlandson an experienced editor, recommended he heavily workshop these pieces, and wait for a polished manuscript. What they published instead is just sad.

About a boy.
By kika
This book reads, no smears, like a slice of the most juicy, self-analytical dear diary that Jung himself would blush at. It is intensely private look into the mind of a musician-cum-writer, who used to be in one of the most well known "grunge" bands of the 90's, the band HOLE. Erlandson's side of the story has always been quiet, but any of those who kept up with any of the press about the time, know that he was in the eye of the heroin chic hurricane; often portrayed as the shy, quiet one, a silent observer of sorts, maybe having to do with his Buddhist background or maybe it's just his personality. Either way it served him in terms of how well he conveyed rather saliently what it smelled like to be there, to be the one conjured in memory. As the writer dances ambiguously through time, we as the reader don't know when he is speaking of Courtney Love or Kurt Cobain, if it is in present day, but it doesn't really matter, since the syntax is so lyrically produced. Your eyes seem to hear the song that he is writing. He has stated that he is heavily influenced by John Berryman and Jim Harrison...to quote a line from Berryman,

"He knows:
he went over everyone, & nobody's missing.
Often he reckons, in the dawn, them up.
Nobody is ever missing."

It sums up the thematic of the 90s, nobodies making music about nothing about something about nothing that meant everything.

I dug the book, it's akin to a piece of literary art, it's not a tell-all, it's not a "lemme read this to the kids". It is singular and sincere, all signs of a good read to me, worth the purchase indeed.Letters to Kurt

Candid, Confusing, and Conscious
By Dollscares
Eric's prose makes me think. It makes me "kill my idols" but also reincarnate them into human beings. I highly recommend this to any Hole fan, Nirvana fan, or anyone young person like myself who got stuck with boomer parents and tends to romanticize gen x's alt nation without looking at its context. It's so refreshing to get to hear Eric's side of things without the media filter or glitz. Not living inside Eric's head, some of the metaphors don't make sense to me but they clearly show a stream of consciousness.

A New Start
By Petermac
This instruction book is the buisness. I am driving better, putting better and showing more consistancy with shots than I have for years. It may not last and probably won't !! but the handicap has started to creep slowly down. He gets a bit too professional on chip distances but maybe I'll come around to that eventually. This book is expensive so have a look at a few of his free videos on u tube( Rob Bernard Centre of Gravity Golf )first to see what you think. I am not on his payroll by the way, I genuinely think this can improve ones game.

Golf made simple
By KevinC-DC
After watching Rob's youtube video "Drive the Golf Ball without Slicing" I am a believer in his method. I've golfed for over 20 years but never took it too seriously until now. I am determined to improve and enjoy this great game. A terrible slice has plagued my game for as long as I could remember. After watching his video, I heading to the course and it corrected my slice. I drove the ball straight and long. His concepts are easy to learn and provide immediate results.

Even better when purchased with the videos
By Paul
Rob's technique is quite amazing. This book takes you through the full swing, putting and all the short game swings.
I also bought the accompanying videos.
I have found that there are some things Rob explains slightly better in the videos and other things he explains slightly better in the book. The way he simplifies the golf swing and breaks it down I could imagine it could even help older golfers that may have suffered a stroke get back into the game.

Happy Pills in America: From Miltown to Prozac, by David Herzberg

Valium. Paxil. Prozac. Prescribed by the millions each year, these medications have been hailed as wonder drugs and vilified as numbing and addictive crutches. Where did this "blockbuster drug" phenomenon come from? What factors led to the mass acceptance of tranquilizers and antidepressants? And how has their widespread use affected American culture?

David Herzberg addresses these questions by tracing the rise of psychiatric medicines, from Miltown in the 1950s to Valium in the 1970s to Prozac in the 1990s. The result is more than a story of doctors and patients. From bare-knuckled marketing campaigns to political activism by feminists and antidrug warriors, the fate of psychopharmacology has been intimately wrapped up in the broader currents of modern American history. Beginning with the emergence of a medical marketplace for psychoactive drugs in the postwar consumer culture, Herzberg traces how "happy pills" became embroiled in Cold War gender battles and the explosive politics of the "war against drugs"―and how feminists brought the two issues together in a dramatic campaign against Valium addiction in the 1970s. A final look at antidepressants shows that even the Prozac phenomenon owed as much to commerce and culture as to scientific wizardry.

With a barrage of "ask your doctor about" advertisements competing for attention with shocking news of drug company malfeasance, Happy Pills is an invaluable look at how the commercialization of medicine has transformed American culture since the end of World War II.

Review

Excellent... stresses the dynamics of sex roles and social class that underlie the culture of psychotropic drug use. He grounds the success of tranquilizers in the consumer culture that emerged after World War II, emphasizing the shrewd marketing techniques that allowed drug companies to separate their products, which appealed to a largely white, middle-class constituency, from the illegal drugs that were used by marginalized racial, ethnic, and class groups. Drug companies also promoted the tranquilizers in ways that reinforced traditional sex roles, implying that their products would allow men to strengthen their authority at home and in the office and would allow women to embrace their duties as wives and mothers.

(Allan V. Horwitz, Ph.D. New England Journal of Medicine)

By placing human action at the heart of this culturally rich history, Herzberg has written a masterful account of the travels of 'happy pills' from Madison Avenue to your medicine cabinet.

(Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences)

Do read this book. It will make you even more thoughtful about your next prescription for antidepressants.

(British Medical Journal)

Herzberg does an excellent job of expounding on the interplay of social, cultural, and commercial forces that influenced the rise and fall of these blockbuster drugs.

(Journal of Clinical Investigation)

Herzberg deftly explains the dispensing of 'happy pills' within the prism of Cold War class consciousness while the US fought a discordant contemporaneous 'war on drugs.'

(Choice)

[Avoids] heated debates between advocates of psychotropic medication such as Peter Kramer and vocal critics such as Peter Breggin and David Healy. Instead, Herzberg shows us how the meanings attached to such drugs evolved from a complex interplay of shifting interests, including those of marketers, patients and doctors. Although the story is a complicated one, it is highly readable and Herzberg tells it using plain, non-technical language.

(Metapsychology)

The book admirably achieves its main aim: describing the reception of tranquilizers in the popular imagination of postwar America. It also draws attention to the important issue of happiness as an increasingly medicalized commodity in that context.

(Nicolas Rasmussen Bulletin of the History of Medicine)

A brilliant book, rich and mind-bending... Unlike most others on the subject, Happy Pills seeks not to condemn or celebrate but to understand. I find it hard not to praise it too much, not to become a marketing tool urging its wider distribution and intellectual consumption.

(Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz Business History Review)

Herzberg eloquently guides us through the world of happy pills in post–World War II America... Happy Pills is an engaging, insightful, and well-researched book that makes a strong contribution to the historical and social study of science.

(Lorna Ronald Journal of American History)

Herzberg is a a social historian and meticulous auditor of the progress of psychotropic medication in the USA... On the one hand these drugs offer escape from the stresses and strains of socio-economic relations; on the other hand they are a direct product of those relations.

(David Pilgrim Sociology of Health and Illness)

Truly a dizzying array of data on the history of the science, commerce, marketing, medicine, psychiatry and psychology, all aspects of the history of the pills, is a major achievement... Herzberg's book, exemplifying history of medicine as a thoroughly interdisciplinary field, is important and timely.

(Susan K. Rishworth Pharmacy in History)

An incisive cultural history that documents the transformation of these medications into 'happy pills' for the middle class.

(Peter Conrad Contexts)

Welcome and informative... a kind of protest against the tendency to assume that the issues surrounding psychiatric drug use can be reduced to scientific or technological factors.

(American Historical Review)

This well-crafted book combines historical perspectives with the enduring issues of consumerism, patients' rights, ethical principles, and the role of pharmaceutical companies in marketing medicines.

(Technology and Culture)

Highlights important implications of the cultural embrace of lifestyle drugs for dealing with everyday problems of living.

(BioSocieties)

A timely book, persuasive and well documented.

(Psychiatric Services)

This extremely well-written and well-researched book demands, and deserves, a wide audience.

(Medical History)

Written with verve, it offers myriad ways to understand the complexity and range of its subject. Not only does it illuminate American drug cultures; it also demonstrates the rich interplay of invention, marketing, advertising, expertise, regulation, medical practice, and consumption.

(Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz Business History Review)

An excellent starting point from which to explore many changes in post-war American psychiatry, changes that have affected the way in which we conceptualize, analyse and treat mental illness.

(Matthew Smith History of Psychiatry)

[An] intriguing book.

(David Pilgrim Sociology of Health and Illness)

Herzberg steers a very steady course through dangerous waters. Happy Pills is a beautiful read, its thesis engaging, and its style well-paced and fresh. Its non-technical language and focus on the interaction between drugs and the broader culture should appeal to many readers regardless of specialization.

(David Healy, author of Mania: A Short History of Bipolar Disorder)

Happy Pills in America offers an extraordinary analysis of how tranquilizers and antidepressants were as much a part of the post-World War II consumer society as suburban living and the car culture. Whether Americans bought or sold, advertised or prescribed, embraced or condemned these feel-good pills, they participated in commodifying the 'good life.'

(Lizabeth Cohen, author of A Consumers' Republic: The Politics of Mass Consumption in Postwar America)

Happy Pills provides readers, especially college-level students, with an excellent historical introduction to the subject of mood-altering prescription drugs as used in the United States in the post-World War II era. Herzberg's clear and readable prose masks in part the depth of his understanding and analysis of the topic. In addition to its classroom potential, this is a serious book with valuable insights for scholars in the field.

(Journal of the History of Medicine)

From the Back Cover

David Herzberg follows the rise of psychiatric medicines, from Miltown in the 1950s to Valium in the 1970s to Prozac in the 1990s. After a market for psychoactive drugs emerged in the postwar consumer culture, "happy pills" became embroiled in Cold War gender battles and the explosive politics of the "war against drugs". In a dramatic campaign against Valium addiction, feminists brought the two issues together in the 1970s. The Prozac phenomenon, too, owed as much to commerce and culture as to scientific achievement. Happy Pills is an invaluable look at how the commercialization of medicine has transformed American culture since the end of World War II.

"Excellent... stresses the dynamics of sex roles and social class that underlie the culture of psychotropic drug use."― New England Journal of Medicine

"Draws attention to the important issue of happiness as an increasingly medicalized commodity in that context."― Bulletin of the History of Medicine

"By placing human action at the heart of this culturally rich history, Herzberg has written a masterful account of the travels of 'happy pills' from Madison Avenue to your medicine cabinet."― Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences

"A brilliant book, rich and mind-bending... Unlike most others on the subject, Happy Pills seeks not to condemn or celebrate but to understand."― Business History Review

"Herzberg eloquently guides us through the world of happy pills in post–World War II America... Engaging, insightful, and well researched."― Journal of American History

Beautifully Written

Beautifully written account of the ebb and flow of modern America's use of mood-controlling medications. There's no taint of advocacy here (we should/we shouldn't). What's fascinating is how little relationship there is between the public perception of medications and their actual effects, both individually and on our culture. The next chapter would be the public perception that too many children are on Prozac. You get a sense that whatever our views on this, they'd be guided by Oprah and not by medical studies.

Hormonal Regulation of Development I: Molecular Aspects of Plant Hormones (Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology) (Volume 1)From Springer

This is the first of the set of three volumes in the Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology, New Series, that will cover the area of the hormonal regulation of plant growth and development. The overall plan for the set assumes that this area of plant physiology is sufficiently mature for a review of current knowledge to be organized in terms of unifying principles and processes. Reviews in the past have generally treated each class of hormone individually, but this set of volumes is subdivided according to the properties common to all classes. Such an organization permits the examination of the hypothesis that differing classes of hormones, acting according to common principles, are determinants of processes and phases in plant development. Also in keeping with this theme, a plant hormone is defined as a compound with the properties held in common by the native members of the recognized classes of hormone. Current knowledge of the hormonal regulation of plant development is grouped so that the three volumes consider advancing levels of organizational complexity, viz: molecular and subcellular; cells, tissues, organs, and the plant as an organized whole; and the plant in relation to its environment. The present volume treats the molecular and subcellular aspects of hormones and the processes they regulate. Although it deals with chemically distinct classes of hormone, this volume stresses properties and modes of studying them, that are common to all classes.

Biocentrism: How Life and Consciousness are the Keys to the True Nature of the Universe, by Robert Lanza, Bob Berman

Robert Lanza is one of the most respected scientists in the world—a US News & World Report cover story called him a “genius” and a “renegade thinker,” even likening him to Einstein. Lanza has teamed with Bob Berman, the most widely read astronomer in the world, to produce Biocentrism, a revolutionary new view of the universe.

Every now and then a simple yet radical idea shakes the very foundations of knowledge. The startling discovery that the world was not flat challenged and ultimately changed the way people perceived themselves and their relationship with the world. For most humans of the 15th century, the notion of Earth as ball of rock was nonsense. The whole of Western, natural philosophy is undergoing a sea change again, increasingly being forced upon us by the experimental findings of quantum theory, and at the same time, towards doubt and uncertainty in the physical explanations of the universe’s genesis and structure. Biocentrism completes this shift in worldview, turning the planet upside down again with the revolutionary view that life creates the universe instead of the other way around.

In this paradigm, life is not an accidental byproduct of the laws of physics. Biocentrism takes the reader on a seemingly improbable but ultimately inescapable journey through a foreign universe—our own—from the viewpoints of an acclaimed biologist and a leading astronomer. Switching perspective from physics to biology unlocks the cages in which Western science has unwittingly managed to confine itself. Biocentrism will shatter the reader’s ideas of life—time and space, and even death. At the same time it will release us from the dull worldview of life being merely the activity of an admixture of carbon and a few other elements; it suggests the exhilarating possibility that life is fundamentally immortal.

The 21st century is predicted to be the Century of Biology, a shift from the previous century dominated by physics. It seems fitting, then, to begin the century by turning the universe outside-in and unifying the foundations of science with a simple idea discovered by one of the leading life-scientists of our age. Biocentrism awakens in readers a new sense of possibility, and is full of so many shocking new perspectives that the reader will never see reality the same way again.

Review
“I found the attack on physics to be pretty compelling ... Lanza's theories [are] certainly worth debate.”
—Houston Chronicle's Eric Berger, SciGuy blog

“What makes this book both interesting and worth the effort of reading it; is the unique perspective Lanza brings to the subject matter as a physician. ... From the way [Lanza] chooses to present his arguments, it's clear he has a solid grasp of esoteric disciplines like quantum theory, special relativity and particle physics. And what makes his presentation more compelling than other efforts I've encountered is his ability and willingness to weave personal experience into the thoughts and ideas presented. His style is conversational and warm which tends to pull you along through the exposition gently. And his sense of wonder and befuddlement at shop worn enigmas like the double slit experiment, Bell's theorem, non-locality and Schrdinger's cat is as infectious as it is delightful ... I very much like what Lanza has to say in Biocentrism.”
—Midwest Book Review

Endorsements for Robert Lanza’s essay on which Biocentrism is based:
“For several days now I have read and reread your article and thought about it. Like ‘a brief history of time’ it is indeed stimulating and brings biology into the whole. Any short statement does not do justice to such a scholarly work. Almost every society of mankind has explained the mystery of our surroundings and being by invoking a god or group of gods. Scientists work to acquire objective answers from the infinity of space or the inner machinery of the atom. Lanza proposes a biocentrist theory which ascribes the answer to the observer rather than the observed. The work is a scholarly consideration of science and philosophy that brings biology into the central role in unifying the whole. The book will appeal to an audience of many different disciplines because it is a new way of looking at the old problem of our existence. Most importantly, it makes you think.”
—E. Donnall Thomas
Thomas was awarded the 1990 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington and Director Emeritus of the Clinical Research Division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

“It is genuinely an exciting piece of work. I am very familiar with some of the things you say. The idea that consciousness creates reality has quantum support, as you suggest, and also coheres with some of the things biology and neuroscience are telling us about the structures of our being. To put what you are doing in a larger context, it exhibits a dramatic new Copernican reversal. Just as we now know that the sun doesn’t really move but we do (we are the active agents), so you are suggesting that we are the entities that give meaning to the particular configuration of all possible outcomes we call reality. I think this is a great project.”
—Ronald Green
Green is the Eunice and Julian Cohen Professor for the Study of Ethics and Human Values, and Director of Dartmouth College’s Ethics Institute. Professor Green is a well-known religious studies scholar and former Chairman of the Department of Religion

“Robert Lanza, a world renowned scientist who has spanned many fields from drug delivery to stem cells to preventing animal extinction, and clearly one of the most brilliant minds of our times, has done it again. ‘A New Theory of the Universe’ takes into account all the knowledge we have gained over the last few centuries, and correlates them to our own beings, placing in perspective our biologic limitations that have impeded our understanding of greater truths surrounding our existence and the universe around us. This new theory is certain to revolutionize our concepts of the laws of nature for centuries to come.”
—Anthony Atala
Atala is an internationally recognized scientist, and the W.H. Boyce Professor, Chair, and Director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

“As an astrophysicist, I focus my attention on objects that are very large and very far away, ignoring the whole issue of consciousness as a critical part of the Universe. Reading Robert Lanza’s work is a wake-up call to all of us that even on the grandest scale we still depend on our minds to experience reality. Issues of “quantum weirdness” do have a place in the macroscopic world. Time and space do depend on perception. We can go about our daily lives and continue to study the physical Universe as if it exists as an objective reality (because the probabilities allow that degree of confidence), but we do so with a better awareness of an underlying biological component, thanks to Dr. Lanza. I cannot speak for NASA or other NASA scientists, but personally I look forward to hearing a more detailed explanation of this biocentric view of the Universe from Dr. Lanza.”
—David Thompson
Thompson is an astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. His contributions include the building and flying of prototypes of EGRET, which was launched by the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1991. He is currently with the Astroparticle Physics Laboratory, and has received both the Goddard Space Flight Center & NASA Group Exceptional Achievement Awards.

“Yes, it is appropriate to ask whether our perception of space and time is a consequence of our particular neurophysiology. Yes, it is appropriate to ask how it happened that the conditions worked out to be just right for life to appear somehow on earth and then to evolve from the archaea through the eukaryotes to us. ... I’ll bet the book gets a good audience. And I like to see books published that challenge my own ideas and thoughts in ways that make me think, but not ones that simply throw dogma at me. The essay is definitely of the former kind.”
—R. Stephen Berry
Berry is James Franck Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, Department of Chemistry, University of Chicago. Professor Berry is a member (and recent Home Secretary) of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences. He was also former Vice President of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and MacArthur Prize “Genius” Fellow.

“Science has a token of freedom that motivates scientists to study all logical possibilities that may explain the world. Robert Lanza has come up with an innovative approach to investigate reality from the viewpoint of biology. His article demands an answer to the question of whether scientists have exhausted all possible tools for studying nature. Can science bring biology into grand unified theory? A solution is suggested that involves a new concept, biocentrism. Lanza goes beyond the individual human attribute calling for interconnectedness among all living creatures forming the fundamental basis for understanding reality. A book that expands upon this unique approach is warranted, not only to alert society, but to call on it to test this novel new hypothesis.”
—Gunther Kletetschka
Kletetschka is a geophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. He is also a Research Professor of Physics at Catholic University of America and leading scientist working on the James Web Space Telescope.

“It’s a masterpiece—truly a magnificent essay. Bob Lanza is to be congratulated for a fresh and highly erudite look at the question of how perception and consciousness shape reality and common experience. His monograph combines a deep understanding and broad insight into 20th century physics and modern biological science; in so doing, he forces a reappraisal of this hoary epistemological dilemma. Not all will agree with the proposition he advances, but most will find his writing eminently readable and his arguments both convincing and challenging. Bravo.”

BEST OF THE BEST
By Robert Steven Thomas
One of the finest & best current books I have read on the subject of human "consciousness." Lanza is a genius of first magnitude. The only tools you will need to appreciate this book as a reader is an open mind, average intelligence and the ability to "think for yourself." When they write the list of this Century's most important books, you can bet the farm this title will be near the top.

Exciting and Enticing work for everyone to enjoy
By Ayris
Those into quantum physics, consciousness, philosophy, science, or even just like ask questions will find this book a delight. Biocentrism, both the book and the theory is explain in a clear and consist manor. The writing is close to conversational- it's not like lecture or like talking to a friend, but the tone is just between the two. You get a very good understanding of Biocentrism (and what it entails) and even a basic understanding of quantum physics, which not many books succeed in teaching the basic concepts since popular culture got a hand on the concept.

The book contains the principles (a chapter for each principles) of biocentrism and then what the theory means to us and to the universe. Each principle-chapter starts from the ground up with analogies and scientific facts to explain and support the principles clearly to the reader. Even concepts you already understand are interesting to ready through just to see where the authors will take you with it.
It is NOT too heady and scientific to read casually or for people who do not typically reads citified studies. I found this book easy to put up, hard to put down, and easy to get back into without skipping a beat after a long break. The restatement of the principles at the end of each chapter really helped with keeping me in tune with the book after a long break and to help drive the principles home and into memory. I

This book introduces lots of interesting concepts and it can give you a whole new view of the universe. It is not fact- it is a theory book yet to be proven, but it does not require you to sacrifice yourself, your beliefs, or your sense to understand it. Unless you think time is real, I suppose, but I blame the school systems for that. The chapter on death and consciousness should also be read by anyone and everyone even if they don't want to read the rest of the greatness. I

Please read this book, don't pass it up. It doesn't take that long and it is truly amazing. I shall part with my favorite quote from this book (well, one)
"This time dilation effect is minor until one nears the speed of light, then it becomes awesome."

DO MODELS OF THE UNIVERSE HAVE TO ACCOUNT FOR LIFE AND CONSCIOUSNESS?
By Steven H Propp
Robert Paul Lanza (born 1956) is an American Doctor of Medicine, and Adjunct Professor at the Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

He wrote in the Introduction to this 2009 book, "This book proposes a new perspective: that our current theories of the physical world don't work, and can never be made to work, until they account for life and consciousness. This book proposes that, rather than a belated and minor outcome after billions of years of lifeless physical processes, life and consciousness are absolutely fundamental to our understanding of the universe. We call this new perspective biocentrism. In this view, life is not an accidental by-product of the laws of physics. Nor is the nature or history of the universe the dreary play of billiard balls that we've been taught since grade school... rest assured there is nothing New Age about this book. The conclusions of biocentrism are based on mainstream science, and it is a logical extension of the work of some of our greatest scientific minds." (Pg. 2) He adds, "this book is not going to discuss spiritual beliefs... It will onlly observe that invoking a deity provided something that was crucially required: it permitted the inquiry to reach some sort of agreed-upon endpoint." (Pg. 8)

He notes, "[there are] more than two hundred physical parameters within the solar system and universe so exact that it strains credulity to propose that they are random... These fundamental constants of the universe---constants that are not predicted by any theory---all seem to be carefully chosen, often with great precision, to allow for the existence of life and consciousness... The old model has absolutely no reasonable explanation for this. But biocentrism supplies answers, as we shall see." (Pg. 7)

He proposes Seven Principles of Biocentrism: 1. "What we perceive as reality is a process that involves our consciousness" (pg. 23); 2. "Our external and internal perceptions are inextricably intertwined. They are different sides of the same coin and cannot be separated" (pg. 39); 3. "The behavior of subatomic particles... is inextricably linked to the presence of an observer" (pg. 59); 4. "Without consciousness, 'matter' dwells in an undetermined state of probability. Any universe that could have preceded consciousness only existed in a probability state" (pg. 81); 5. "The very structure of the universe is explainable only through biocentrism... The universe is simply the complete spatio-temporal logic of the self" (pg. 93); 6. "Time does not have a real existence outside of animal-sense perception. It is the process by which we perceive changes in the universe" (pg. 110); 7. "Space, like time, is not an object or a thing. Space... does not have an independent reality... there is no absolute self-existing matrix in which physical events occur independent of life." (Pg. 127)

He suggests, "'Theories of Everything' that do not account for life or consciousness will certainly lead ultimately to dead-ends, and this includes string theory. Models that are strictly time-based, such as ... the Big Bang as the putative natal event of the cosmos, will never deliver full satisfaction or closure." (Pg. 162)

Lanza's seven Principles---while intriguing, and congenial---go significantly farther than the evidence he adduces to support them. Nevertheless, this thought-provoking book will be of great interest to those looking for speculations about the "meaning" of life, and the universe.

The Thirteenth Step: Addiction in the Age of Brain Science, by Markus Heilig

The past thirty years have witnessed a revolution in the science of addiction, yet we still rely on outdated methods of treatment. Expensive new programs for managing addiction are also flourishing, but since they are not based in science, they offer little benefit to people who cannot afford to lose money or faith in their recovery.

Clarifying the cutting-edge science of addiction for both practitioners and general readers, The Thirteenth Step pairs stories of real patients with explanations of key concepts relating to their illness. A police chief who disappears on the job illustrates the process through which a drug can trigger the brain circuits mediating relapse. One person's effort to find a burrito shack in a foreign city illuminates the reward prediction error signaled by the brain chemical dopamine. With these examples and more, this volume paints a vivid, readable portrait of drug seeking, escalation, and other aspects of addiction and suggests science-based treatments that promise to improve troubling relapse rates. Merging science and human experience, The Thirteenth Step offers compassionate, valuable answers to anyone who hopes for a better handle on a confounding disease.

Review
Heilig makes the science of addiction accessible to both lay and professional audiences alike with an engaging conversational tone laced with humor and illustrative vignettes. He draws the reader in and effectively consolidates complex concepts. I applaud his efforts to bring the plight of the addicted to the attention of others and for his calling upon the field to do its very best to help. (Valerie J. Slaymaker, Hazelden Graduate School of Addiction Studies)

It was a great pleasure to read this book. Without being openly critical of the usual talk therapy, Heilig outlines the newest treatments that should be offered to every patient suffering from addiction. He shows that treatments today can be based on recent scientific knowledge about what is happening in the brains of alcoholics and describes new treatments based on current knowledge about the disease. Heilig, a world-class expert, has done a tremendous service for patients and their families by writing this book. (Charles P. O'Brien, Department of Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania)

Markus Heilig sums up what he has learned during his twenty years as a physician and researcher in the treatment of alcohol and other addictive disorders.... An informative and compassionate chronicle. (Kirkus Reviews)

Poignantly written and personal, yet presents the current science of addiction in a clear and engaging way. Markus Heilig's exploration of addiction science is beautifully written and is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand why addictive behaviors and bad habits are difficult to give up, and how to do it. Heilig has masterfully laid out his own clinical experiences and concisely presented the science of addiction. His book brings to life the countless devastating effects of addiction that affect individuals across all strata of society while attacking the stigma of addiction and shows the importance of neuroscience in understanding and treating it. (Rajita Sinha, chief, psychology section, Yale Medical School)

Heilig is one of the wisest, smartest, most insightful people I know. And what Heilig is, so is this book. A fantastic journey across one of the most complex and misunderstood problems of our time. (Pier Vincenzo Piazza, director, Neurocentre Magendie)

Recommended for anyone who suffers from addiction or who knows someone who does; undergraduate and graduate students, scholars, and researchers studying medicine, particularly addiction and neurology, and psychology; and anyone who has an interest in learning more about the subject. (Library Journal)

What makes this book especially compelling is the author's ability to smoothly transition between dealing with addictions at the human clinical level and at the more abstract level of scientific research. Heilig admirably tries to extract the most meaningful takeaway points from sometimes-dense scientific findings.... Highly recommended. (Choice)

Markus Heilig has succeeded in making the airy dismissals of biological evidence-based approaches to addiction, such as those he heard in medical school, no longer tenable. (Séamus Sweeney Times Literary Supplement)

[The Thirteenth Step] offers a brilliant and, perhaps more important, highly legible review of current addiction science.... Heilig's synthesis invites us all to critically consider the addiction concept along with its implications for people, policy, and the practice of medicine. (Kyle Bridge H-Sci-Med-Tech)

An Excellent Read
By Carlton Haggard
As a treatment professional, I found this book to be an excellent read about the science of addiction and evidenced-based treatments available. Heilig's chapters on molecular culprits and pills for addiction are superb. The entire book does an excellent job of reviewing the history of treatments for addiction, as well as the history of evidenced-based medical treatments for alcohol use disorders. He handles a discussion of AA with aplomb, and with the pragmatic view of a scientist. Overall, an excellent read for anyone interested in the science of addiction, the pharmaceutical treatments that are currently available, as well as a review of other treatment options from the perspective of a person of evidenced-based science.

Very Well Done!
By C. Rider
This book deserves a serious review from scholar/practioner in Addiction work. I am a social scientist doing research for family members. For my purpose, I could not ask for more from a resource. Well written, cogent and very useful for the casual reader trying to assist family members. Bravo.

Best book I've read on the subject
By lisahg
Best book I've read on the subject. And that is saying something, because I have read several dozen since addiction visited the life of a close family member.

If you want a good grounding in the research, the status of clinical help available, and the many factors that are associated with addiction, read this book. It's written at a relatively sophisticated level, but it is not dry or boring.

Review
'This volume, which focuses on Australian perspectives on terrorism, provides significant new dimensions. Four main areas are treated in this intriguing analysis: responses to uses of torture, legal approaches, terrorism as a consequence of globalisation and counter-terrorism. There is a nice blend of the heterodox, theoretical and concrete cases. Without doubt this is a challenging, perceptive and useful book that must be essential reading in the sometimes hyper-ventilated field of terrorism studies.' Alan O'Day, Greyfriars Hall, University of Oxford, UK 'Terror does not respect disciplinary boundaries. In confronting the global reality of terror from philosophical, political and legal perspectives, Imre, Mooney and Clarke, open the way for deeper and more considered responses to our age. Their message is one of totality, of the need to consider terrorism as a crisis of ideas, of politics and of laws. In this they offer a wealth of insights to both researchers and policymakers.' Kieran Tranter, Griffith University, Australia 'What is the nature and source of terrorism? What responses to it are effective and just? The authors of this deeply engaging and thoughtful volume carefully address these difficult questions in a way that is informed by politics, philosophy and law. The result is an illuminating insight into the complexity of the phenomenon of contemporary terrorism.' John N. Williams, Singapore Management University, Singapore 'The book is unique in its sociopolitical, philosophical, and legal approach, which creates an alternative to the numerous economic, military, and area studies perspectives that generally dominate the literature...The book is an excellent resource for upper-division undergraduates and graduate students in political science, sociology, law, and philosophy programs...Highly recommended.' Choice 'The book is a very useful addition to the literature on international terrorism and should find a place in all libraries which focus on this important theme. The book is equally useful for laymen to understand the nuances of Islamic terrorism. The authors have carried out painstaking research and have argued their case with clarity and conviction.' USI Journal 'The authors of this anthology do not inspire to offer an exhaustive analysis of terrorism of comprehensive solutions thereto. Rather, motivated by a confused debate on the subject, their main goal is to provide input that might support an improved understanding of the causes and motives behind terrorist behaviour and help us understand how terrorism should be addressed...Highly relevant questions are addressed and ideas on how to respond to terrorism in sustainable ways are offered.' Ethical Perspectives
