Quite possible the worst textbook I've been assigned to read
By D. Ramirez
I will make this rather short and to the point. The organization of the materials reads more like a narrative than a textbook. The reader is forced to make sense of the writer's complete lack of structure and categorizing. There were numerous typos and as well as sentences in which all of the words contained no spacing between them. This was a rather difficult course, and the author/publisher failed to assist in any way.

Good psych book
By Sci Guy
Very detailed, and rarely boring. The only problem from my perspective is that it was too detailed sometimes, and the course I was taking was not as in-depth. Other than that, excellent.

Enjoyable and Engaging
By bookreader
I found this to be an interesting, engaging, well-arranged text book. It took a complex subject which easily could be confusing and laid it out in a nice, easy manner. The course felt easy for me because this book was so efficiently designed that learning was almost effortless. This is an achievement in any subject, but is particularly appreciated in a subject like psychology, where many texts have multiple theories for many phenomena confusingly splotched together on a page without strong overarching narrative. Exceeded my expectations, reading assignments in the book were never a drag, no gristle just lean knowledge injection straight into your brain.

Explore the history behind the bubonic plague that left Europe reeling from one of the greatest losses in history

The Black Death is the name most commonly given to the pandemic of bubonic plague that ravaged the medieval world in the late 1340s. From Central Asia, the plague swept through Europe, leaving millions of dead in its wake. Between a quarter and a third of Europe's population died, and in England the population fell from nearly six million to just over three million. Sean Martin looks at the origins of the disease and traces its terrible march through Europe from the Italian cities to the far-flung corners of Scandinavia. He describes contemporary responses to the plague and makes clear how helpless the medicine of the day was in the face of it. He examines the renewed persecution of the Jews, blamed by many Christians for the spread of the disease, and highlights the bizarre attempts by such groups as the Flagellants to ward off what they saw as the wrath of God.

Packed with facts as well as opinions, each book has all the key information you need to know about such popular topics as film, television, cult fiction, politics, and more. For media buffs and students, these are great entry–level books that build into an essential library.

"An Interesting, Almost Scholarly Writing"
By Russell A. Rohde MD
"The Black Death", Sean Martin, Chartwell Books, NJ, 2007. ISBN 10:0-7858-2289-5, HC 158/131. Appendix 10 pgs. further reads 10 pgs., Index 6 pgs. 7" x 5".

A scholarly treatise with an overtly easy read for enhanced understandability and readability to the non-scientific layperson, this book is perhaps an important one in understanding the more complex issues raised by the specter of epidemic and pandemic `plagues' which have wrought havoc on the Earth's populations and entire nations, cultures and religions since first recorded case in 430 BC. This book concentrates largely on the "Black Plague" which struck between 1328 and 1352, mainly years 1347 to 1349, but deals also with lesser plagues and some closely related pestilences whose etiology remains obscure but subject to knowledgeable discourse, and includes Ebola, small pox (Red Plague), dysenteries, typhus, anthrax, influenzas, and a variety of named Plagues (Great, Grey, Red, bubonic etc.).

This study was necessarily based on written historical records, many originally chronicled in archives of churches, etc. and written by survivors of the disease. The response of the Church to the origin, impact and dealings with the sick is detailed.

Etiology of "Black Death" was eventually ascribed to humans infected with bacterium Yesinia pestis after bitten and thus inoculated by the rat flea Xenopsylla cheopsis. There followed an almost immediate course of sepsis with swollen lymphatic nodes or buboes that suppurate, pneumonias, septic syndrome and death usually within 1-3 days. Mortality rates vary from 60-95%, populations often decimated 25-30%. The epidemiology of the disease is nicely discussed by the author who traces the initial cases from the Mediterranean to world-wide dissemination via trade routes, cargo ships, caravans, etc. via rats, fleas and human contacts.

Well written but not much substance
By C. J. Thompson
I read this short little book in a few hours. The author writes very well and his light style makes the subject enjoyable. Unfortunately, with the exception of some interesting material on the 'Flagellants', most of the information he provides has been dealt with in depth in quite a number of other books on the subject, such as the excellent Black Death by Phillip Zeigler. Also, had the author simply written a book about historical pandemics and left it at that, the book might have impressed me a little more. However, he chose to write a book about the Plague using the title 'The Black Death' and therein lies what I see as one of the flaws of the book. At the very beginning, Mr Martin unequivocally declared that the pathogen responsible for the first, second and third pandemics was 'Yersinia Pestis' and maintains this a the central thesis of the book. Today, however, there is a growing belief that the disease that ravaged Europe in the middle ages (and now referred to as the 'Black Death') is not the same disease whose cause was isolated as the Bubonic Plague organism during an outbreak in China in the 19th Century. Only in the final chapter does the author even acknowledge the the existence of any controversy and then he fails to deal with it in any meaningful way. I don't believe that any decent book on this interesting subject can afford to so cavalier with the issue today.

Mastering AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012
By Daniel
As an experienced user of Civil 3D, it is important to keep up with the yearly impovements to the interface. This book is a great reference to keep with you as you work. I would like to point out that experienced professionals, like myself, often buy these books in order to quickly brush-up on changes in the interface, or learn of newly added tools. While the text is a great resource, we aren't necessarily going to read it all. We mainly want to run through the exercises from front to back first, then delve into the text as needed. Unfortunately, the exercises in this edition tend to be buried in the text and are hard to find. It would be a valuable time-saver if all exercises were highlighted in some way, or better yet, numbered and included in an exercise index. The exercises are poorly marked and are broken up throughout the text so you have to read and read to find where the exercise continues. I don't have time for this. Just in the first two chapters alone, there are errors in exercise directions using incorrect survey quadrants that send you off in the wrong direction, references to exercises that don't exist, and exercises that callout incorrect units for radii and length. Sybex really needs someone to run though every exercise and ensure that they are correct and complete.

Excellent Read
By Cyndy Davenport
First of all, I would like to say that this book is an excellent read. The language is friendly. The flow of subject matter is easy and logical. The content is thorough. It's obvious that the authors have had real-world experience with the software. Plus, there is humor! Now I wouldn't recommend it for poolside reading, but it would be an excellent reference to keep next to your computer at work.

The chapters are geared towards building insight. For example, you will have great insight regarding the functionality of parcels and where parcels can be applied in a Civil 3D project process instead of just learning how to create parcels. Also, the book is very well organized so that each chapter is purposed and focused. For instance, Superelevation could be addressed in several chapters: Alignments, Profiles & Profile Views, Assemblies & Subassemblies, and Corridors. Instead of spreading that information out over four chapters, there is one chapter dedicated to Superelevation.

Throughout sections of the book, there are tips and tricks which will help advance your developing skill with the software. There are also exercises spread throughout the chapters designed to fortify your learning. There are "Master It" tasks at the end of the chapters that will help drive certain concepts home. Then there are certification objectives flagged throughout the book that will help prepare you for the Autodesk Civil 3D certification exams.

Book=good Example file=bad
By Civil 3D Master
Book is well written and geared for the avid Civil 3d user. Information was clearly presented and the tutorials detailed in their step by step approach. The new information in the book was helpful for utilizing the new features in the software, especially the hydrology section in Chapter 14 and is definitely worth the read. I have found the previous versions of the book helpful and this version was proved the same. The only problem was the tutorial drawings and files did not perform as described in the book examples, specifically referring to the storm sewer analysis in Chapter 14. The Storm sewer file and the drawing file both errored out and was unable to continue with the exercise. In summary, get the book if you are interested in getting up to speed with the new version of Civil 3D (2012), while everyone else is still struggling with 2011.

Celebrating Failure: The Power of Taking Risks, Making Mistakes and Thinking Big, by Ralph Heath

"Failure has a lot to teach, and Heath tells business leaders to use it creatively.Take this smart book off the shelf."
--TIME Magazine

"For those executives who may be somewhat skittish about allowing the cracks in their armor to appear, Celebrating Failure is a great tutor. It provides the much-needed reminder that achievement is forged in the fires of failure. If one can stand the heat, the result, like Celebrating Failure itself, is pretty impressive."
--Soundview Executive Book Summaries

"Heath deserves praise for understanding the power of story as a means to capture attention and the necessity of brevity in maintaining attention. Celebrating Failure features short tales that readers can quickly read and ponder over for hours afterward."
--Smart Business

"People from every walk of life can learn something from Celebrating Failure. Encouraging originality, responding to changes, and thinking big are just some of the approaches Heath advocates to help people learn from failure and achieve their dreams."
--U.S. Senator Russ Feingold

"Fear of failure is perhaps the worst affliction a manager can have because it leads to creative paralysis and inhibited growth. Despite all the clichs coming from higher management, most managers know that mistakes are more often punished than rewarded. Into this cultural reality now comes Ralph Heath's reassuring words about failure not only as a teacher but as a power that leads to greater success. I highly recommend this helpful book."
--James Autry, author of The Servant Leader

Celebrating Failure is the definitive how-to manual for leaders seeking to embrace the power of failure as a learning tool to improve their organizations and achieve ever-greater goals. The business world (and, lately, the political arena) is convinced that the number one topic is change. Heath posits that it might well be failure, because if you do it right, failure can become a launching pad for change.

Heath contends that "positive failures" are not only necessary steps on the path to success, but encourage greater freedom to take risks in pursuit of one's life goals. This counterintuitive but powerful title includes:
* Engaging stories of real-life business and personal failure experiences.
* Practical steps to apply each chapter's "lessons" and change your approach to risk-taking and failure.
* Positive, effective ways to eliminate the "fear of failure" that can hold you back in today's competitive, fast-changing world.

Heath's insightful stories lay out his own failures and reveal his human side as a son, father, athlete, and business leader.

Insights from Reading this book
By Joyce A. Friel
I like Chapter 4 the best - Leading from the Back - it reminded me of hiking with my granddaughter - it's best to be behind her and so she senses control and sets the pace. It also reminded me of Herbie in Eli Goldratt's book The Goal. Great book BTW if you've not read it.

You had some great quotes in the book. Some of my favorites were:

As long as you're going to be thinking anyway, think big - Donald Trump. Amen!
P. 61 Hiring is not exclusively about finding people with the right experience; it's about finding people with the right mindset. Amen! (If I could just get that across to some of my clients, they would be amazed at how much frustration they save themselves...and me! They know this intellectually, but get caught up in hiring because they know the person, or know who recommended them, or like so aspect of their personality, etc.)
P. 68 ...if we put human needs first, profit has away of following.
Favorite quote was on page 89..."Balls," said the queen. "If I had them, I'd be king". Love it.

Ideas/Mind shifts I particularly liked:

Plan as if the future is already here.
P. 84 - Create a company so good I feel compelled to spend my money with you. This is a great vision statement for a company.
P. 90 - The day you win the business is also the first day you start losing the business.
P. 110 - I liked your idea of rewarding ee's for taking on a physical challenge. I'm going to share this with a client of mine.
P. 50 - your comment back to your daughter when all she wanted was praise reminds me of being sapped in the book ZAPP! By Bill Byham. Another good read if you haven't explored it.
P. 76 - Playing it safe is a sure path to mediocrity. Reminds me of a quote I heard from a former boss at Kodak which I had a friend who knows calligraphy scribe and framed it "Islands of excellence in a sea of mediocrity". Taking a risk is the island of excellence and sea of mediocrity is playing it safe.
P. 81 - your `client growth meetings' as what I call stewardship meetings. I hold these periodically with clients to listen to their needs and remind them of value they have received in a very soft kind of way. Also on page 129 the ROI discussion - I sometimes present a stewardship report to clients in the for of an ROI they have received and then carry on the discussion about their future needs. They are quite willing to go there when they are reminded of the value they have experienced.

Chapter 21 seemed like a continuation of Chapter 20 as helping the wrong folks find the right job is also another HR ROI.

P. 169 - "If you stand still, the only people who will succeed are your competitors..." reminds me of a stupid thing I did one time while working for IBM - talk about the opportunity to celebrate a failure! I needed to get further out of my comfort zone that time.

Great read. Enjoyed it. Have 3 clients I want to buy it for. Keep writing and let me know when I can buy the next book.

I highly recommend this book for any professional, especially if you are in sales & marketing!
By Lee Say Keng
'Celebrating Failure: The Power of Taking Risks, Making Mistakes & Thinking Big',
by Ralph Heath;

GO AHEAD & FAIL! EMBRACE FAILURE! SEEK IT OUT! LEARN TO LOVE IT!

The foregoing exuberant exhortation truly reflects my personal sentiment about what this new book, entitled 'Celebrating Failure: The Power of Taking Risks, Making Mistakes & Thinking Big' by business coach Ralph Heath is all about.

Writing with warmth, sincerity & candour, the author has very skillfilly drawn from his own 31-year professional history of running Ovation Marketing, an award-winning advertising agency business, as well as "hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of personal failures to achieve outstanding or spectacular learning experiences", often interjecting pragmatic lessons from interacting with his own direct family members.

There are altogether 30 great chapters, totaling just under 200 pages, & with the 'Introduction: Failure Teaches You to Succeed', that makes 31, each artfully prefaced with a short but meaningful chapter title, e.g. #1: 'Starting Fires'; #30: 'Change is My Drug of Choice'.

What I like most about reading the book is that each chapter has an inspiring quote & a brisk preamble, which presents 'The Failure Factor', as well as a concise summary, which highlights the actionable insights from the author. Hence, reading is a breeze, & best of all, takeaways are right at your fingertips.

That's to say, in really no uncertain terms, the entire book has been thoughtfully crafted by the author, with all the cumulative chapter insights actually forming the jewels of the book.

For me, among many others, my favourite chapter is #27: 'Why Wait?'.

According to the author, the word 'Wait' is one of the ugliest words in the English Language. Surprisingly to me, he has even added that it is often used in advertising agencies as a call for inaction.

Nonetheless, the swift counterpoint from the author is "to take action, to move forward with your thoughts & ideas to accomplish something, instead of waiting for something - or nothing - to happen.".

At the end of the reading endeavour, one can quickly use the book as a how-to manual on developing a culture of intelligent risk taking in any setting, organisational, professional or personal.

The author's account of failures, setbacks & triumphs is reassuring, joyful & motivating. His writing is succinct, concise & easy-going.

I highly recommend this book for any professional, especially if you are in sales & marketing.

As a matter of fact, I am convinced that people from every walk of life can learn something useful from Ralph Heath's 'Celebrating Failure'.

Great Book
By R. S. Sundet
I really enjoyed this book. It should be read by every manager who is interested in encouraging innovation among those who report to him or her.

I think the premise of "Celebrating Failure" is right on: that if a lot can be learned from mistakes why not encourage employees to take a chance and then if they make a mistake, instead of berating them, use it as a learning experience. I have always thought that was true but Ralph Heath has articulated it in a way that makes it clear that mistakes can be growth opportunities rather than career enders. The examples he cites from managing employees who worked at the advertising agency he started and managed for 30 years serve to drive this point home.

I have encountered employees who had such a fear of making a mistake that they were afraid to make a decision and certainly were afraid to take a chance (the old adage: "You can't get fired if you go with IBM" or some other tried and true product or method still holds true). I hope that "Celebrating Failure" can circulate in those companies and encourage some bosses to allow employees to stick their necks out a little. Both the boss and the employe will be better for it.

A great read and full of real life examples. Very well written.

The Dangerous Summer, by Ernest Hemingway

The Dangerous Summer is Hemingway's firsthand chronicle of a brutal season of bullfights. In this vivid account, Hemingway captures the exhausting pace and pressure of the season, the camaraderie and pride of the matadors, and the mortal drama as in fight after fight the rival matadors try to outdo each other with ever more daring performances. At the same time Hemingway offers an often complex and deeply personal self-portrait that reveals much about one of the twentieth century's preeminent writers.

About the Author
Ernest Hemingway did more to influence the style of English prose than any other writer of his time. Publication of The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms immediately established him as one of the greatest literary lights of the 20th century. His classic novella The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. He died in 1961.

From the Introduction

This is a book about death written by a lusty sixty-year-old man who had reason to fear that his own death was imminent. It is also a loving account of his return to those heroic days when he was young and learning about life in the bull rings of Spain.

In the summer of 1952 Life magazine headquarters in Tokyo dispatched a courier to the front lines in Korea with an intoxicating message. After prowling the mountainous terrain along which desultory action was taking place, he found me at a forward post with a small detachment of Marines.

"Life is engaged in a tremendous venture," he told me in conspiratorial whispers. "We're going to devote an entire issue to one manuscript. And what makes the attempt so daring, it's fiction."

"By who?"

"Ernest Hemingway."

The name exploded in the cavelike foxhole with such force, such imagery, that I was instantly hooked. I had always admired Hemingway, considered him our best writer and certainly the man who had set free the English sentence and the crisp vocabulary. As I wandered about the world I constantly met foreign writers who went out of their way to assure me that whereas they considered themselves as good as Hemingway, they did not want to mimic him. They had their own style and were satisfied with it. And I began to wonder why they never said: "I don't want to write like Faulkner..." -- or Fitzgerald, or Wolfe, or Sartre, or Camus. It was always Hemingway they didn't want to copy, which made me suspect that that's precisely what the lot of them were doing.

If you had asked me the day before that meeting with the Life man I'd have said: "I admire Hemingway immensely. He gave us all a new challenge. But of course I don't want to write like him."

The emissary continued: "With so much riding on this experiment Life can't afford to take chances."

"On Hemingway? How could you lose?"

"Apparently you haven't been following the scoreboard. The critics murdered his last offering."

"Across the River and Into the Trees? It wasn't too hot. But you don't condemn an artist for one..."

"That's not the point. They not only blasted the novel, which was pathetic, but they called into question his legitimacy, his right to publish any further."

"I can't believe that."

"Didn't you read that savage burlesque of him and his novel? That hurt."

"I missed it, being over here. But you can't burlesque a man unless he's very good to begin with...unless readers are so familiar with his work that they catch the jokes. You don't waste your time teasing a nothing."

"This wasn't teasing. This was a thrust at the jugular."

"Hemingway probably told them to go to hell."

"Maybe, but he was deeply hurt. And Life is painfully aware that the attacks cast a shadow over whatever he publishes next." The man paused to study the battlefield in front of our dugout, then came to the point: "We have one hell of a bundle -- money, prestige -- riding on this one-shot issue."

"Why come to see me?"

"We want to present the story in the best possible light."

"What can I do? I don't know Hemingway."

"Do you respect him?"

"He's one of my idols."

"That's what the editors hoped." He looked me in the eye, then said: "They want you to read the galleys...make up your own mind...no pressure from us. And if you like what you see, give us a statement we can use in nationwide publicity."

"To what purpose?"

"To kill any lingering reminders of those savage reviews. Knock in the head suspicions that the old man might be through."

"Tell me the truth. Have you asked other writers better known than me? Have they refused?"

"I really don't know. But I do know the editors think that your approach to war and the role of men makes you eligible. Also, they think readers will listen."

"Is Hemingway in on this?"

"He would be mortified if he knew we thought he needed help. He'll know about it when he sees the copy."

The decision was easy and automatic. I assured the emissary that I would read the manuscript, praying that it would be good, and if it was I would not hesitate to say so boldly. Because a writer just getting into his career asI then was rarely has an opportunity to pay tribute to one of the masters.

"Guard this with your life," the emissary said. "This is the only copy outside New York. And if you decide to make a statement, get it to us in a hurry." Placing the rather frail parcel in my hands, he nodded, warned me not to leave it where others might spy, and left to catch the Tokyo plane.

The next hours were magic. In a poorly lighted corner of a Marine hut in a remote corner of the South Korea mountains I tore open the package and began reading that inspired account of an old fisherman battling with his great fish and striving to fight off the sharks which were determined to steal it from him. From Hemingway's opening words through the quiet climaxes to the organlike coda I was enthralled, but I was so bedazzled by the pyrotechnics that I did not trust myself to write my report immediately after finishing.

I knew that Hemingway was a necromancer who adopted every superior Balzacian trick in the book, each technical device that Flaubert and Tolstoy and Dickens had found useful, so that quite often his work seemed better than it really was. I loved his writing, but he had proved in Across the River and Into the Trees that he could be banal, and I did not want to go out on a limb if he had done so again.

But as I sat alone in that corner, the galleys pushed far from me as if I wished to be shed of their sorcery, it became overwhelmingly clear that I had been in the presence of a masterpiece. No other word would do. The Old Man and the Sea was one of those incandescent miracles that gifted writers can sometimes produce. (I would learn that Hemingway had dashed it off in complete form in eight weeks without any rewriting.) And as I reflected on its perfection of form and style I found myself comparing it with those other gemlike novellas that had meant so much to me: Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome, Joseph Conrad's Youth, Henry James's The Aspern Papers, and Faulkner's The Bear.

When I had properly positioned Hemingway's tale among its peers I hid the galleys beneath my bedroll and walked out into the Korean night, agitated by this close contact with great writing, and as I picked my way across the difficult terrain I made up my mind that regardless of what critics sager than I had said about Hemingway's previous fumbles, I would have to flaunt my opinion that The Old Man was a masterpiece, and to hell with caution.

I am embarrassed to state that I have no record of what I actually reported. My judgment appeared in full-page ads across the country, and I think I said something about how happy writers like me were that the champ had regained the title. No one reading my words could doubt that here was a book worth immediate reading.

At any rate, Life used my statement enthusiastically and paid me, but what I didn't know was that while their Tokyo agent was handing me my top-secret copy of the galleys -- "the only set outside New York" -- Life was distributing another six hundred sets to opinionmakers across the United States and Europe, each one top secret and unique. When the issue containing Hemingway's novella appeared during the first week of September 1952, it was already an international sensation. One of the cleverest promotions ever orchestrated had resulted in immediate sales of 5,318,650 copies of the magazine, the swift rise of the book version to head the best-seller list, and a Nobel Prize.

Hemingway had won back the championship with a stupendous ninth-round knockout.

The success of this daring publishing venture had a surprising aftermath. Life was so pleased with its coup that the editors decided to try their luck a second time, and when they cast about for some writer who might do another compact one-shot, they remembered the man who had stuck his neck out when they needed a launching statement for their Hemingway.

Another emissary, this time from New York with lots of corporate braid, came to see me, in Tokyo I believe, with a dazzling proposal: "We had such an unprecedented success with The Old Man that we'd like to go back to the well again. And we think you're the man to do it."

"There aren't many Hemingways around."

"On your own level you might do it. You understand men in action. You have any stories in the back of your mind?"

I have always tried to answer such questions forthrightly. I love writing. I love the swirl and swing of words as they tangle with human emotions. Of course I had a dozen ideas, most of them worthless when inspected closely, but a couple of them seemed to have real staying power.

"I've been doing some combat flying over Korea..."

"At your age?"

"And a lot of patrol work on the ground. I see certain big outlines."

"Like what?"

"Like it's perilous for a democracy to engage in war without declaring war. Like it's morally wrong to send young men into action while old men stay home and earn a bundle without any war taxes or deprivations. And it is especially wrong to call a few men arbitrarily into action while allowing others just as eligible to stay home free."

"Would your story be beating those drums?"

"I don't beat drums."

"Write it. I think we might have something."

Driven by a fire I had rarely known, and excited by the prospect of following in the shoes of Ernest Hemingway, I put aside all other work. On 6 July 1953 Life offered its second complete-in-one-issue novella, The Bridges at Toko-ri. This was less than a year after the great success of The Old Man and, as before, the editors protected themselves by asking another writer to authenticate the legitimacy of their offering. This time they chose Herman Wouk to say good things, and although I cannot remember what I said about Hemingway, I recall quite clearly what Wouk said about me: "His eyes have seen the glory." That became the sales pitch this time, but a friend of mine writing a r...

Bullfighting through the eyes of Hemingway
By Linda Linguvic
Considered literary non-fiction, this is the account of the 1959
season of bullfighting in Spain and the intense competition between
two competing matadors for the glory of that season. It is his last
major work at age 60; he killed himself the following year.
In an
introduction by James Mitchner, it is explained that this piece was
commissioned by Life Magazine. The assignment was for Hemmingway to
revisit the bullfights he had written about in his classic novel
"Death in the Afternoon" published in 1940. Hemingway was
supposed to write 10,000 words for the article. Instead, he submitted
120,000 words. It was edited down to 70,000 words and ran in three
installments.
This book I read, however, was only about 45,000 words
and focuses specifically on the particular contests between two
competing matadors who happened to be brothers in law. Hemingway had
a personal relationship with both of them and brings the reader to the
dinners and the parties as well as to the infirmary after a goring,
the painful healing process in Spanish hospitals that do not
administer painkillers, the long rides on bad roads between bullfights
and the dirt and heat and fatigue and glory.
I have not read much of
Hemingway and knew nothing at all about bullfighting when I started
reading. Yet, by the end of the book a portrait of the author emerges
as well as an understanding of the history, tradition choreographed
performance of skill that occurs in the bull ring. Somehow, I was
able to move beyond my personal feelings about the slaughter of the
bull, and get into the mindset of Hemingway and the people of Spain,
where bullfighting is a national passion.
It has to do with courage.
And it has to do with facing death.
Hemmingway said it all it better
than I ever could:
"This was Antonio's regular appointment with
death that we had to face every day. Any man can face death but to be
committed to bring it as close as possible while performing certain
classic movements and do this again and again and again and then deal
it out yourself with a sword to an animal weighing half a ton which
you love is more complicated than facing death."

Last Hurrah for Papa
By Diego Izurieta
Fortunately I had read Death in the Afternoon before absorbing this last encore. By the end, I was attached at the soul to both matadors, (Cain and Abel!?). I wish I could read the other 50,000 words edited from this work. Papa described everything that was behind the fragile curtain of honor, bravado, showmanship, and the pageantry of bullfighting. Like many musicians or athletes of our time, we cannot observe from behind the scenes all the work, travel and lack of sleep that these people go through, therefore we cannot fully appreciate the bullfighters of the "Lost Generation". I recommend this book to anyone who wants to experience this true American literary icon and Spanish culture and History. It is interesting to see the way Spain has changed over the years. This book is full of magic and it describes the drive and mild competitiveness that all men and women should have inside in order to suceed in today's harsh world. The introduction of James A. Michener is beautifully written by someone who knew Spain. The terms are helpful to any who is not familiar with basic bullfighting. This is one of Papa's most under-appreciated least-recognized works, but that's ok with me.

Don't ever go to a bullfight without reading this book first
By A Customer
I should have read this chronicle of bullfighting before my college semester spent in Madrid. I did not read it and instead, I sat in the bleachers of the arena completely disgusted, wishing for the first time in my life that I was at an American football game instead. I was so ignorant that I almost felt tempted to run down and let the pathetic black creature loose, like some rebel animal rights person in a research lab. Back then, I did not understand the history, tradition, glory and sentimentality that belongs to bullfighting. I was ignorant and should not have gone to the bullfight without reading this chronicle by Hemingway first. Now, I some day plan to return and to watch another bullfight. I know now I will see a completely different sport; and not really a sport but a performance. I once thought bullfighting was a battle between man and beast. After reading The Dangerous Summer I know it is a choreographed performance of skill, wisdom, experience and bravery. I urge anyone who plans to go to a bullfight, to read this first. Do not judge this Spanish tradition until you first understand what it is about.
