Good is bigger than everyone

Toph struggles with her metalbending students (and a possible hostile takeover), and Sokka pitches in to help them out. Meanwhile, Aang and Katara go to see the Earth King to talk about the uneasy alliance between the Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation, hoping to come to a resolution. And, of course, Zuko struggles with the increased pressures of being the Fire Lord, continuing to consult his imprisoned father for advice on how to cope.

First, I of course love Toph--how she sometimes seems like such a stubborn jerk but has all these layers underneath, and how she has a real calling for teaching (and yelling at people), and how she comes to realize she may be trying to groom her metalbending students into something they really aren't . . . just like her parents did to her. And I liked that she asked Sokka to evaluate her ability to roll her eyes properly so she could roll her eyes at him. And her students were kind of hilarious, even though they were each pretty one-dimensional--the fearful doomsayer, the shoe-obsessed spoiled brat, and the goth-type kid who hates everything because someone gave him a terrible name. It was cool that they wanted to be more, but they . . . kind of weren't, at least not in the story.

Katara and Aang make a very cute couple, and I liked that Katara got so jealous of the Avatar fangirls. (I didn't love how they were stereotyped, though--as vacuous, predatory girls who threaten Katara's relationship.) I did like that Aang was pretty oblivious to the whole thing, enamored instead with the feeling that someone tried to recreate his home by modeling the fanclub headquarters after the Air Temple he'd grown up in.

And the complexity of Zuko continues to impress me. His father insists that a Fire Lord doesn't choose what's right; he MAKES things become right THROUGH the act of his choosing. (Wow, we've got some theory of knowledge philosophy lessons going on here! They were talking about that back in Ancient Greece!) Zuko rejects this idea of goodness being defined by HIS choices; he believes that good is bigger than everyone, and that Aang can help him find it. But the Earth King--determined to force peace, even if it means war--is about to ruin the tentatively forged balance that the Avatar worked so hard to establish.

I got these for my grandson who loves Avatar: The last airbender. He was especiallly pleased to find out these books took up where the DVDs left off. They answered some of his questions.

Outstanding!

As if it wasn't enough that the TV series was awesome - the books are also fantastic. This one picks up where the previous one (The Promise: Part 1) left off: Toph is with Aang, Katara, and Sokka in the Earth kingdom to resolve the issue of Yu-Dao and the Harmony Restoration Movement, while Zuko is seeking help from his father, Ozai about the pressures of being the Fire Lord. There is a subplot with Toph trying to teach Metalbending to her students, and Sokka helping her with it - Sokka's wit is something being greatly missed in Korra, but the book has it spot on.

There is an Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Promise: Part 3 that will release in September/October that will conclude this story arc (possibly leading to Republic City!) - I'm eagerly waiting for it.

This is an early novel which will appeal to readers who are familiar with British school sports more than to the ordinary American reader. Wodehouse's comic genius and his understanding of human character are evident, but the plot does not build to the kind of hilarious climax one finds in some of the later works.

This is the first book I've found on Chiron and it's place in the horoscope. As such it is well worth being read, if one is curious as to how this new planet actually fits into the astrology of old. I approached the book with strong curiosity, and was informed and enlightend.

There are weaknesses one might expect from a first book, the first explanation of a new set of facts and identifications.

The general ephemeris loosely identifies where Chiron was--but does not go date by date, but rather it is year by year. This renders many of the identifications in the book useless and increases curiosity about this subject. Later studies after more time and study have been made, this weakness may be removed in later books.

However, as the only book on Chiron it is a important addition to anyone's interest in astrology. Further study and more time may be necessary to be able to become more specific in identifying each person's relationship to the planet. As we are now, this is an important and wonderful book worth reading.

About the Author
Cindy Corey is a California licensed clinical psychologist with a private practice in San Diego, California. She worked for over a decade as a full-time Visiting Professor in the Department of Counseling and School Psychology at San Diego State University, in both the Community Based Block and Marriage and Family Therapy programs. She received her master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of San Diego and her Doctorate (PsyD) in Multicultural Community Clinical Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology in Alhambra, California. Dr. Corey has focused much of her work in the area of counselor education, specializing in multicultural training, social justice, and community outreach. In addition to teaching at San Diego State University, she taught part time in the PsyD program at Alliant International University in Alhambra. She has also worked as a contracted clinician for Survivors of Torture International, focusing primarily on helping Sudanese refugee youths to adjust to life in the United States, gain employment, and attend colleges and universities. Dr. Corey works as a multicultural consultant and has created clinical intervention programs, training manuals, and diversity sensitive curriculum for a variety of schools, businesses, and organizations in the San Diego area. Her private practice focuses mainly on working with women, couples, counselors, and graduate students in counseling programs. Gerald Corey is Professor Emeritus of Human Services and Counseling at California State University at Fullerton. He received his doctorate in counseling from the University of Southern California. He is a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology; a licensed psychologist; and a National Certified Counselor. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 17, Counseling Psychology; and Division 49, Group Psychotherapy); a Fellow of the American Counseling Association; and a Fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work. Both Jerry and Marianne Corey received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Mental Health Counselors Association in 2011, and both also received the Eminent Career Award from ASGW in 2001. Dr. Jerry Corey was given the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award from California State University at Fullerton in 1991. He regularly teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in group counseling and ethics in counseling. He is the author or coauthor of 15 textbooks in counseling currently in print, along with more than 60 journal articles and book chapters. Marianne Schneider Corey is a licensed marriage and family therapist in California and a National Certified Counselor. She received her master's degree in marriage, family, and child counseling from Chapman College. She is a Fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work and was the recipient of this organization's Eminent Career Award in 2001. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Mental Health Counselors Association in 2011, and is a member of that organization. She also holds memberships in the American Counseling Association, the American Group Psychotherapy Association, the Association for Specialists in Group Work, the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and the Western Association of Counselor Education and Supervision. In the past 40 years, Marianne Schneider Corey and Jerry Corey have presented workshops in group counseling for mental health professionals at many universities in the United States as well as in Canada, Mexico, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Germany, Belgium, Scotland, England, and Ireland. this text is garbage. Constructively speaking

I am going to have to disagree with a lot of the positive reviews of this book. This was required text in not one but two grad level classes for mental health counseling. While I typically have positive comments related to the Coreys; this text is garbage. Constructively speaking, the book--for a 9th edition--is severely unorganized. While it reads less like a traditional textbook, it appears more random and stream-of-consciousness than any text I have ever read. The bulk of the chapters all the seem the same. I tend to read and use a highlighter for important parts; I rarely highlighted. It just drolls on and on never really making much of a point. I found myself having to highlight entire paragraphs to make sense rather than simply using one or two well-written sentences. I honestly felt like they had asked the authors to give an impromptu speech about group therapy and they simply had someone transcribe whatever they said. Occasionally, in a later chapter, it seems like they will simply make a comment about something they discussed and forgot to mention earlier. The text does present some interesting group formats for specific populations but they seem a little too specific for use in an introductory group text. While this was required for me, a much better text is Gerald Corey's Group Techniques (I read the 3rd edition). This book is about 1/4 of the length and is very succinct and better written. If you have a choice in the matter, go with the Group Techniques book rather than this mess. Noted are that the Group Techniques does not address community or school groups where as this text does. You're not missing much though.

Eh. Cost does not match quality, should be cheaper.

The book served its purpose. However the condition of the book did not justify the price I paid to rent. Some of the pages were loose and eventually a good chunk of pages came out so it was a hassle making sure I kept all the pages together. Eventually I stopped using it. I'll be returning this but a chunk of pages are not attached to the book anymore.

The Coreys always write a user friendly text. I enjoy when they put a sentence in first person so it feels like they are speaking to you and feel "real".

My thoughts:

When reading Cutter I was very emotional. Not just because it touches a lot of topics from Teen Drinking to Drugs, to partying and being destructive. But it touched a topic that hit me in a way I cannot describe- Cutting or in clinical terms Self Mutilation.

The emotional discord found inside of the main character Jessica, had me in tears through most if not all of the book. This kind of displaced feeling, sorrow, depression, abandonment is something I think most of the average teenager goes through. I have also felt similar feelings growing up.

Cutter shed light on so many issues affecting teens, from peer pressure to anxiety, self pity, insecurity, lack of self value. It shows that these sorts of feelings can be found in any class, middle or otherwise and it is a serious if not life threatening station.

I felt so strongly for Jessica that I wished I could help her somehow. I also felt like there was just too much being thrown at this young girl that it would only be a matter of time until she did something catastrophic. It was an undeniably heart wrenching read, and I do hope all those that delve into the pages have at least a few boxes of tissues.

This is definitely a book to read to your daughter or sister, loved ones. Even young men should know the dangers of peer pressure. I also think it will be an ice breaker to broach topics that sometimes as parents we feel we can't approach with our kids. This is an eye opener, it will make all aware of these dangers, the emotional toll they take, and give us a better understanding of what steps to take should someone close to us have these issues or circumstances.

It also brought to light how as parents we don't see the damage we can do to our child, with words or lack of them. Without affection or even a minute to just talk about menial things. Kids crave attention no matter the age and if we take a second out of our busy lives to recognize them- it will go a long way.

I realize I have went on a tangent, but after reading this book I have opened my eyes to see a bigger picture I didn't know or realize was there. These things do happen whether we want to see it or not. And although I have two toddlers right now a boy and girl, I know that if or when (thought I pray not!) I ever have a crisis on my hands, or just when they reach the age where these sorts of situations are around, I can make this book a family read to talk in-depth about what to do, how to act and should they slip that we can discuss it. That we can find a safer way to cope.

The only fault I could find in this book was the end left me incomplete. I needed more, and hope there is a continuation of Jessica's story so that I as a reader feel that she has had some closure. I wanted to know more about her group and individual therapy. I wanted to see if her friends stayed true or if they fell off somehow as her support system. I wanted to know if there was change in her family structure.

But other than that it was a very touching read. I would recommend this to everyone.

****** For those who know anyone with a condition that is or can be described as self mutilation, please seek help for them now. Don't give up on them and continue to be a supportive hand. Not everyone has the same walk of life, we deal with situations differently. Take the time to listen, help them as much as you can and most importantly don't give up on them. And if at all possible, read this book together. Sometimes it takes an outside source to show others they have a problem, and could give them the motivational tools to seek help.******

Well written

This book really relates to what I'm going through and it also guided me to a therapist. I surround myself with true friends and family, finally I know the difference between fake and real people. It was very good but the way it was written wasn't so great. But overall I would recommend this book to teenagers that struggle with cutting and and type of illness.

Further, such analysis could be performed on design concepts to optimize the motion of a machine arrangement.

This second edition incorporates much of the feedback received from instructors and students who used the first edition of the book. First, a thorough examination of the accuracy for all equations and Example Problem solutions was performed. Second, solution steps have been added to the Example Problems, highlighting the general solution procedure. Third, the material on mechanism force analysis has been greatly expanded. These and many other modifications were made to more effectively promote the understanding of mechanism analysis.

It is expected that students using this book will have a good background in technical drawing, college algebra, and trigonometry. Also, knowledge of vectors, mechanics, and computer application software, such as spreadsheets, will be useful. However, these concepts are also introduced in the book.

Solid textbook

Required text for the course I took, way cheaper than the school bookstore. Sometimes, I thought things weren't explained well, and some of the questions at the end of the chapter used situations that were not addressed in the text. Even the instructor agreed with that. Also, the text deals with the theoretical aspect of some of the items, where our instructor was a retired engineer, and taught to the use of the subject matter in the real world. Overall though, the book was adequate

Great Machine Design Textbook

This book is pretty easy to understand, but it's short on images. I had to read a lot of text to understand the concepts. It is very clear in its descriptions; however. It's fairly easy to navigate around this book. It's created for people who are studying Machine Design. It's a textbook, so nothing like a plot.

DO NOT BY THIS BOOK!!

It appears this book was edited very poorly from the third edition to the fourth edition. For example we would be assigned homework problems at the end of each chapter the answers to the odd problems are in the back of the book but most of the answers are from the third edition text there were very few answers in the back of the book that were correct we know because our instructor had both editions of the book. There are numerous typos through out the book incorrect units bad equations the whole chapter on cams is useless none of the cam displacement equations work we had to use another reference when we got to the cam section. About the only thing in this book that was accurate was the graphical portions of each chapter that was it. I do not recommend this book if you need to learn anything about kinematics evaluated analytically.

Food Cures Book

This book is excellent if you are trying to find natural ways to fix problems related to your body. The book gives great practical suggestions and all recomendations can be find at your local whole foods or regular grocery store. Like many of these types of books it does recommend that you make permanent dietary changes and you should see some relief in whatever your condition is, but the book is great and I would highly recommend it.

Some good information..

This book does have some good information, but it does not talk at all about eating organic food, grass fed beef, free-range eggs, etc, or the benefits of a 100% plant based whole foods diet. The toxic pesticides and artificial hormones in our society has a huge effect on our health and some ailments probably wouldn't even exist if it weren't for them.
