Highly rewarding overview and guidebook!

This book should be in high schools, in marriage council services, in life skill courses, in life planning and development courses, in retreats, in all sports lounges and arts colleges, galleries and arts supply stores. It would also be of great help to people trying to look for work, change career, deal with family or friend issues, change culture/home location, understand world news, understand political processes and to help you gain a very healthy sense of humor as you gain insight into the wide variety of ways humans operate in complex situations and either perform marvelously or screw up and then create or get caught in catastrophes.

It's a nice overview of the "lens of perception", it's functions and its relationship to the "logos", which is the combined collection of all the "lenses" out there, including the cosmos (I guess). The idea is truly core to most spiritual wisdom traditions who all try to deal with it, and Bennett lists four major ways that's done.

To understand how all four ways work or don't work I personally find highly rewarding, as even those spiritual traditions like Zen will appreciate the wider perspective; if you want to clear the lens, in the process of cleansing it, you discover what's in it! If you want to discover what the lens is and how it operates in general or in your own life and then how you can work with it, cleansing it (zen) or having some objective assistance (science) can help both reveal it and cleanse it.

I've studied zen texts from a variety of authors, greatly appreciate Buddhist and Taoist authors and related, such as Alan Watts, Carlos Castaneda, Pema Chodron, Chogyam Trungpa, Suzuki, Lao-Tzu, Chuang-Tse, etc. Digging deep into these spiritual wisdom practices of east and west reveals a great core concern for the "lens of perception" and that dealing with it is not a simple of matter of either turning it off or fully on. It's essentially "on" to some degree, so you both need to understand it and also have some capacity to objectively work with it while not getting totally controlled by it.

Bennett takes you through a good discussion of the "lens of perception", then the "logos" and in the later chapters talks through various means used to discover how your own lens is operating and how you can use it in a healthy, productive way and not just be blindly subject to it.

I'm totally convinced, through other sources primarily, that you simply can't learn much from the spiritual wisdom traditions if this issue isn't clearly understood as BEING A CORE CONCERN! It would be hellish to try to build a healthy spiritual life if you didn't understand this. Good teachers past and present soon state the case clearly (fortunately!). Poor teachers will NOT tell you what's going on, and this is perhaps the prime difference between authentic spiritual wisdom and what goes for common "religion". Religion has a tradition of NOT allowing YOU to understand anything and put blind faith in vague myths about desperado cult leaders from middle eastern deserts from 2000 years ago. YOU can do much better and YOU are free to do so.

Bennett also makes the crutial connection to TAKING ACTION! If you've read any Tony Robbins, you know that Robbins (and career coaches, sports coaches, arts training, etc.) has always focused on providing help that drives you to liberated, more healthy ACTIONS, as a better state of being, not as some kind of super-goal system that will never arrive. It's about handling your constant state of reality, not separating yourself from it. Goals as your living process, not goals as whimsical or impossible dreams (so many young grads have outragiously unrealistic career and self-image dreams - they need to establish a constant process of living with reality to facilitate their good ideas and shed anything phony or that separates them from reality).

So I'm glad that Bennett drives forward to that point, of integrating the meditative, insightful, creative and honest (and even the sometimes self-deceiving) components of the "lens of perception" with a constantly cycling and evolving series of actions. The feedback loop must work both ways or no potential is built or results realized (hence, like a good songwriter, you wade into the process and have some adventures to talk about!). The actions and meditative/contemplative mind/body perception building and cleansing states are mixed with the real world constantly. Nothing in this book is about living in isolation or just skimming through texts academically.

Playing in the "invisible sandbox"

Beginning with the premise that "we are all part of a reality that is not at all as we perceive it through our five senses," Hal Zina Bennett weaves words that mesmerize, providing fleeting glimpses into his own "invisible sandbox." Sometimes, he does this through chilling nightmares and hallucinations that feel real despite their grotesque landscapes. Sometimes, he tells personal stories that cannot be explained using science or reason. Still other times, by using language logically the way we are used to hearing it, he offers exercises to help the reader tap into his own subconscious. The chapter on Global Compassion is magnificent. Bennett shares some of his own inner struggles as he reaches the conclusion that "(h)ealing ourselves or our planet is not ... an exact science, but an art, a way of life. At its best, it's a spiritual discipline that makes full use of all that we know of the inner world and our relationship to what we perceive to be the physical world."

Finally, something to verify this.

I found this book by chance at a discount book store outside of Mesa, AZ. I was driving cross-country and was about to leave when I found the store in a mini-mall. I waltzed in and found a section dedicated to metaphysical books where I spent over an hour scouring the shelves. This was the last book I looked at before I left and after all that searching, it felt like the book had found me. I paid $4.50 that day. The ideas explored in this book are no less than what I'd been searching for. Certain things Hal explains verified my own thoughts and helped me discover new ways of employing my introspection and reason. The book went above and beyond in explaining how to see things more clearly and interact with my thoughts. There were certain strategies that I found holes in, but Hal explains that they may not work for everyone. I have read books that focus on meditation, which is one of the sure-fire ways to see things as they really are and to focus your positivity. Bennett's method's can be relied upon or combined with other methods to meditate effectively. It's imperative that, while reading this book, you clearly understand what is going on. It is meant to be read thoroughly, and is sharp enough to keep you interested in the journey. I will definitely read this again.

Real Time Travel, Sensibly Priced

H.G. Wells made time travel sound pretty easy, and many authors have followed suit. Create your machine, turn a dial, and presto, you're some-when else. You're pretty sure when you are, and if you twist the dial back to the original position, you go home. Mr. Stilwell doesn't buy that. In his universe (and probably ours as well) time travel is hard. There's no dial that can get your one day, on month or a million years forward or backward reliably. It's trial and error and error and error. I would have to say that this is a thinking person's time travel novel (No disrespect to Mr. Wells - his works were amazing, just different presuppositions and less available science at the time).

On top of pretty good science, Mr. Stilwell does pretty good fiction as well. His characters have some depth, and they grow through their experiences in the story. I particularly like the development of the AI. I found its growth through the story compelling and believable.

Overall, I'd recommend this book to those who want a different take on time travel. There are other good time travel stories out there, but I think this one offers some unique ideas worth exploring.

About the Author
Wayne F. Cascio earned his B.A. degree from Holy Cross College in 1968, his M.A. degree from Emory University in 1969, and his Ph.D. in industrial/organizational psychology from the University of Rochester in 1973. Since that time he has taught at Florida International University, the University of California/ Berkeley, and the University of Colorado/Denver, where he is at present Professor of Management. He has served president both of the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management and of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. In addition to hosting an annual week-long conference on international human resource management at the University of Colorado, Professor Cascio has consulted on five continents with a wide variety of organizations in both the public and private sectors on HR matters. He also periodically testifies as an expert witness in employment discrimination cases. Professor Cascio is an active researcher and is the author or editor of five books on human resources management.

Great book, exactly like US edition inside

Bought this book for one of my classes, when I got it I was nervous it would be different from the US edition. All my worries were put to rest because this book worked perfect with my class. No complications at all with page numbers or problems.

NOT WHAT I ORDERED

I ordered a hard covered Human Resource textbook, I thought from America, unfortunately, I received a soft covered Indian edition. What was that? It took 28 days, too long, to arrive. My class had already started, this was the 4th week, needless to say, I was very far behind and the book was different than the American version that my classmates had. Then, to make matters worse, there was no way to track it. I called Amazon several times, but because it was shipped through a 3rd party, I was out of luck.
EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED!!

Half an Abercrombie (but still good!)

Joe Abercrombie isn’t exactly someone I imagined from the latest wave of gritty/dark fantasy authors who would dive into the young adult genre - yet here we are. Half a King is the first book in the now-complete Shattered Seas trilogy, and stars the young Yarvi, second in line to the throne of Gettland. Yarvi is a young man on the cusp of manhood, about to take the tests to become a minister - sort of like a maester from Game of Thrones - and renounce all claim to the throne of Gettland when, predictably, tragedy strikes.

Abercrombie does an excellent job painting the outlines of a boy in this situation, raised in a cold, royal household, who trusts his mentor more than anyone in the world. He is well-suited to his apparent destiny as a minister, but quite suddenly finds himself thrust onto the throne - him and his shriveled half-hand that renders him an object of scorn among the people of the court.

More misadventure befalls Yarvi as the story finds its footing and, while somewhat predictable, is entertaining until the last twist reveals itself in the final few pages of the book. There is love, of a kind, between Yarvi and a fellow misadventurer; there is betrayal; there are forbidding parents and mysterious companions.

However, Half a King feels, ultimately, like half an Abercrombie book. A lot of the grit has been washed away from the story, grit that made Abercrombie a hit not that long ago with The First Law, and while I would certainly recommend Half a King to young adults rather than that other series, I would still hold that first trilogy as the better. Nonetheless, I look forward to reading Half the World, the next entry in the Shattered Seas trilogy.

Boy-kings and Vikings and Bloodthirsty Oaths!

After six excellent books filled with grit and gore, written for adults, Joe Abercrombie decided (as I understand it) to recharge his batteries by writing a fantasy YA trilogy, starting with Half a King. You’d be forgiven if you thought, after reading the first few chapters, that this was going to be a normal, mundane, (if well written) coming of age YA story. Well, you’d be wrong. And not half wrong, but all wrong. (How many half-jokes can we fit into this review? Because if a half-joke is a joke that is only kinda funny, well, I’m full of those - just ask my students...)

The story starts as one might expect after having read the back of the book: boy prince who unexpectedly becomes king only to have it snatched away from him, thus igniting a revenge story. That does indeed cover the first few chapters, and while revenge is the motivating force for our heroic half king, it’s not a glorious revenge (well, the book is glorious, but the revenge is sour). Half a King is an intelligent and powerful combination of adventure and vengeance filtered through the lens that reminds the reader revenge rarely turns out the way you think it should.

What’s not immediately clear by either the cover art nor the back cover blurb is that this book is less fantasy and more viking. Some of the beginning descriptions confused me until I stopped trying to visualize it like Game of Thrones, and instead visualized it like Eric the Red.

One aspect that I find most impressive about the book is how lean and focused the writing is. Let’s be honest: when was the last time you read a great fantasy book that didn’t require a six month’s leave of absence to finish? Half a King is fit and trim. There is only one point of view, characters come and go, and the plot moves quickly. There were so many scenes that could have been explored, but Abercrombie only tackles what it right and what is necessary. And so the book feels focused. It’s fantastic.

The other reason I find this book so appealing is because I can’t think of another YA author writing in this non-magical fantasy setting. Most other YA fantasy books are bursting (sometimes stupidly so) with magic and flighty fantasy: Harry Potter, Eragon, The Lightning Thief all come to mind. But Abercrombie has created a mature fictional world. It comes with normal men and women who kill or are killed, who beat or are beaten, who cheat or are cheated, who do what they must to survive. It is fascinating and heartbreaking to watch good characters try to navigate this gray and murky place.

As YA fantasy lit, the novel is new and fresh. Don’t worry if you found Abercrombie too vulgar, violent or lewd in the past. Half a King dials down the sex and gore by many factors, but Harry Potter this ain't - people die and life is miserable, even if you do have traveling companions at your back. Half a King will appeal to a wide range of high schoolers and adults alike. The novel is intense and lean, immersive and visceral. There is no reason for you not to pick it up. This is Joe Abercrombie’s best book yet, and you will love it. I certainly did.

An excellent read

I think anyone who dislikes Half a King on the basis of it being YA should read a few other contemporary YA fantasy books for comparison. With a few exceptions, this series is head and shoulders above the rest of the YA fantasy genre.

If you're looking for the extreme "grittiness" of Abercrombie's other books, then this may not be for you. If you'd like a quick, enjoyable read with a tight story and great writing, then you'll probably enjoy Half a King. It's sold as "young adult," but it is infinitely better written than most of the YA fantasy I've read. Although some reviewers complained that the plot was simple or felt rushed, I appreciate that it's lean and to the point. I love a long, rambling epic, too, but it's refreshing to read something that feels planned. It's a quick read (and the Kindle price is great!), so it's a good book for when you aren't looking for a huge time investment.

Punctuation and grammar are key!

This book has a lot of great information. However, there are tons and tons of grammatical errors. It makes the book hard to read when half the time you're trying to decipher what the author is trying to say. I can't pretend to be an expert on grammar and punctuation, but this book needs some serious work. And to think it's a second edition? If this book helps me pass my boards, I'll no longer complain, but I would still like to see a third edition, preferably error free. Especially considering the amount of money this book cost!

Deborah M. Coulter-Harris, Ph.D., a native of Massachusetts, currently teaches in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Toledo. Just-read must-read!

This fun biography of the legendary queen is a must companion if you're even remotely interested in the subject matter. The author meticulously builds a thesis identifying the Queen of the South, Egypt's Hatshepsut and the Queen of Sheba as a single personage. Her argument is gracefully presented and convincing and the book reads like a passionate study of a legendary woman. Those interested in Biblical history, women's history, the Near East and mythology will all find this most satisfying. Funny that I went back to it and looked for the illustrations the second time around; there were none but the book is so lively you it won't occur to you! Was an excellent, edifying beach read despite its academic leanings.

Everyone who is interested in feminist theory needs to read this book! Dr. Coulter-Harris’ analysis of the historical Sheba is not only sophisticated, but I would go so far as to say that it is brilliant. The book only mentions Velikowsky in passing and does not rely entirely on his theory regarding Sheba. The original connections she makes between the historical Hatshepsut and the legendary Sheba are original and astonishing. Do yourself a favor and read this text!!

Why not read the original story?

Why duplicate all the research that Velikovsky did on the subject in "Ages in Chaos"? Velikovsky was the first person to suggest that Hatshetsup was the same person as the Queen of Sheba. Buy the original; you won't be sorry.
