Another Great Peterbilt Book

This a Great book to add to a Peterbilt Collection, I was Hoping for More Cabover Coverage in the Cabovers section in the end, But There was no 362E mentioned(362 enhanced model) History is there, Just as in Rasmussens Book, There are a couple B/W pics from Ron Adams, and others that I have seen before, and a few I have not. Its basically a Book focusing on Custom Petes, Look at the Cover.I was disapointed the Famous Tnn Big Rig Custom old 362 was not there. And no 379 X pics sadly.only a mention. And not enough 389 shots, or legacy class edition 379(last 379) pics. But I tell you what, I still like the book despite its few shortcomings.I would recommend it to True Peterbilt Fans like myself.

Peterbilt - Long Haul Legend

Pretty good photos but major typos. Should have gone through Spell Check before publishing. Should have also been edited to eliminate redundancies found in several areas. Had the author wanted more photos or content, he could have contacted dealer sales people, Peterbilt factory folks, even more Pete owners! Needs a major revision. Yes, I used to sell Petes and Kenworths as well. And drove truck for 22 years before that.

Clearing the basic thinking of physicists

Scientists and physicists during the last few centuries have unlocked staggering amount of understandings about both the micro world (protons, neutrons, electrons, etc.) and the macro world (the cosmic system), which we must be very proud of collectively as a species. Now it is time for us to graduate from our enormously successful "kindergarten thinking" (as a species) to "middle school thinking" (self-aware thinking) to overcome our stagnancy from discovering further and deeper realities of nature! Framing the question determines the answer we are going to get out of nature. So, we must learn to iteratively re-frame our questions to understand the same natural phenomenon more deeply, even though the current mathematical theory seems to be working. Emulating a success model allows one to achieve more successes faster. But by staying stuck in the same success model, we deprive our creative and critical scientific minds from further evolution by our own choice. We must gather lessons from our success path, but we must not stay stuck in the same success rut because it is so comfortable!

Silverman's book "Philosophical Solutions: In Physics, Mathematics a..." is a timely book that underscores our need to re-think our methodology of thinking in spite of staggering successes achieved by us so far. It is an extremely valuable and timely book for any serious physicist who wants to get out of the "rut"-mode of thinking that we have been stuck for several centuries. About the Author
Back in the dark ages of view cameras and enlargers, Syl Arena studied commercial photography at Brooks Institute and fine art photography at the University of Arizona. An early indication of Syl's willingness to explore the boundaries of photography was his construction of a pinhole camera into which he loaded 20 x 24 litho film. Over the years, Syl has shot commercially for newspapers, magazines and catalogs. He has been recognized for his expertise on color-critical workflow and his ability to turn noon to night by firing off a dozen Speedlites simultaneously. The Canon flash bible

I was fortunate to participate in a 2 day workshop with Syl in the lead up to this book, and now I have the book in my grubby little hands, I can heartily recommend it for anyone who is trying to get something more from their speedlites than Canon seems to think they are capable of.

If you've just bought your first speedlite, then this book will walk you through everything you need to know to get it off the camera *and* keep the wonderful ETTL functionality that so many people misunderstand or seem to dismiss as gimmicky.

If, like me, you've got a couple of speedlites and had already got them off the camera, then there is *still* material in here that will help you up your game and expand what you are able to make these wonderful little lighting gadgets do. My biggest revelation in off camera ETTL speedliting? Buy a long ETTL cable :) Syl turned me onto what can be achieved if I get my master speedlite off the camera, on a cable so I can trigger my slave anywhere, including behind my model. So simple, yet I never thought of it.

There are tons of full color photos in the book that cover every topic covered in writing, making it perfect for us visual learners.

Did I mention, it's Canon specific? So little has been written for us ... all those "brand independent" books I've read and purchased in the past still assume only Nikon is able to handle off camera flash work, never really giving Canon their due. Finally, something I can simply follow along with the buttons on my own system and understand the same terminology.

Simply - *the* book to buy if you want to get better at what we do in the Canon world.

The Definitive Reference on Canon Speedliting (& much more)

Simply put, the best book/reference tool that I have seen to date on speedliting (regardless of brand). So much great information, presented in an easy to understand manner, and with terrific explanations as to the why behind Syl's methods and choices. Canon shooters in particular will absolutely love this volume. The author clearly spent a great deal of time and effort creating this book which is evident in the amount and quality of examples, both the photos and the fabulous "syllustrations". Great reference books only come from a combination of knowledge and passion for the subject, and it is clear after reading this book over the last two days that Syl has both in abundance. Finally! a practical lighting book for Cannon Flash

I've decided to write this review in terms of what I'm getting out of this book. To put it in context, I'm a Canon shooter (just stepped up to a 60D) and have, of course, Canon flashes. I've wanted to do more with flash, but the details (with explanations of why, not just how) of using the 580EXII (for example) are very hard to find. As a result, 90% of my images are landscapes and I've shied away from using flash. No more.

Until now, the only things I could find were a few online tutorials and a very good book by NK Guy. Although that book is excellent, this one is better (buy this one first, but if you can afford it, get both.)

Top Ten benefits (for me) of this book.

1. Great explanations of using light. By that I mean to create shadows and give definition. On the opening pages there's a picture of a white square against a black background. Next to it we can see that the square was simply a sheet of copy paper. We can see that because the author crumpled and then straightened it, giving it texture that the light could use to create those shadows and make it obvious. In two pictures and two paragraphs, the author said more about using light than hundreds of others tried to do elsewhere.

2. Great explanations on how to manipulate the buttons on the Canon flashes to make them do what you want. [Note: some of that is quite tricky, such as the need to hold a button down for 2 seconds in order to get into a specific configuration mode].

3. Great tips, such as telling you that if the flash modifiers are not 100% secured into the flash head, the controls won't work.

4. Excellent step by step instructions through the menus on both the flash units and the camera bodies.

5. Clear and understandable explanations about master and slaves, groups, channels, etc.

6. Clear and understandable explanations about ratios between flashes and how to set and control them from both the flash and the camera

7. Some very useful tips for using Canon-compatible flashes and even non-compatible ones

8. Good descriptions of studio lighting, and of combining (ganging) flashes

9. A very nice section on flash modifiers (scrims, gobos, snoots, etc). That reminds me, there are sidebars that explain all the jargon. Very useful, indeed.

10. Several chapters at the end that put it all together, including one that explains the cover shot.

This is a long awaited, MUST BUY book for Canon flash users.

In 2004 Steve Brookstein became the first ever winner of the X Factor. He was promised a million pound record deal. By the summer of 2005, it was all over and Max Clifford was threatening him. Despite a successful career before the show, including 2nd place on a previous TV talent show, the industry and the press turned their back on him. This is his story.

It will annoy Simon Cowell 110% if you buy this book

Steve Brookstein is the ginger foster child of the X Factor. No one wants him, he is deemed fair game for a kicking but for some reason he demands your attention.

Put simply, this is an excellent book. Whether you are a fan of the X Factor or not, this book will keep you gripped until the end.

I always find it strange that even after the best part of a decade, the UK press still pump out vacuous stories on Brookstein’s fall from grace. No one seemed bothered to actually present Brookstein’s side of the story so when I stumbled upon his book on Amazon I bought it immediately.

As we all know, the X Factor is fixed. Not in the sense of vote-rigging but in how the X Factor presents its contestants, ie. the ones that the X Factor want to succeed are given the best songs to sing, a “compelling narrative” is created and they are given more air time. Its sort of like wrestling, they pretend to fight each other and we pretend to believe it.

Every year, we are all baffled at how some fantastic singers are rejected in the early phases of the show whilst other mediocre singers make it to the live shows.

Quite simply, the “best” contestants for the X Factor are the ones who attract viewers and most commonly these contestants have a narrative constructed around them to help sell the show.

Take this year for example; we have the dental receptionist, the transvestite, the backing singer, and the “bad boy”. We also had a girl who every time she spoke to the camera, a different family member had died and the X Factor was quick to exploit this. If I were a family member of hers I would barricade myself in an underground bunker until the show has finished just to be on the safe side.

Brookstein was labelled the “pub singer” fighting for his final chance at success, when in fact he was already an established singer. Just like this year, most of the contestants are established singers, some have already won TV talent shows and some have had record contracts.

Yet the X Factor exploits all this in order to get people to vote and to watch the show. Getting Over the X gives us the first hand account of this process. We see how every aspect of the show is managed and manipulated by the production team.

Brookstein takes us on his journey from contestant, to winner, to being unprepared for the aftermath and finally to the point where he could release this book due to Max Clifford being imprisoned for sexually assaulting young girls.

Brookstein also finally opens up on the verbal abuse he suffered on a weekly basis from Louis Walsh and Sharon Osborne, the latter being famous for marrying a heroin addicted musician from Birmingham several decades ago.

Louis Walsh, who as reported in the Irish press, has a low IQ. Brookstein gives us a first hand account of how just how hypocritical and self-contradictory Louis is as a judge. I always found it a bit sad that Simon Cowell exploited Louis Walsh for so many years by getting him to sit as a judge just so the public could laugh at the ridiculous things that Louis would say (“The McDonald Brothers will be stars”). Louis was the judge equivalent of the contestant who didn't know he was utterly hopeless and it is a good thing that Louis has now retired. It was painful to watch him in the later years.

The X Factor has done so much harm to quality music as the charts are now polluted with manufactured tripe and cover songs sung by contestants having their 15 minutes. It is not a singing competition, it is a vacuous manipulation led by moronic judges and contestants who prefer to choose money and quick fame over substance. No great music has or ever will be created by this show and the sooner its demise comes along the better.

Basically, it will annoy Simon Cowell 110% if you buy this book. What better reason is there not to buy it?!

Every X factor fan should read this book so that they can get an insight into the manipulation and psychological games that the contestants are subjected to. It is well written and the truth leaps off the pages. Having won the first series of X factor Steve has become the most maligned character from any series having to endure continued negative and mostly fabricated press over the last 10 years. Unable to stand up against the media machine this book gives Steve's perspective on why he has been continually ridiculed and how he and his family have endured this ordeal. A real eye opener!

A Triumph!

To read of the injustices that Steve has endured, and meanwhile maintain his integrity, his musicality and his deep sense of family is indeed a major triumph. I have known Steve's wife Eileen, her late Father, Alastair and Mum since the late 80's, and I've had the pleasure of meeting Steve, too. I found this book to be a confirmation that "Good really does triumph over evil". A truly inspirational read.
