Jacobus Johannes Pieter Oud was born in Purmerend, Holland, in 1890. Educated at the Arts and Crafts School in Amsterdam and at the Technical University in Delft, he worked for Theodor Fischer in Munich before settling in Leiden.~An original member of De Stijl, Oud eventually left the group due to philosophical disagreements. In 1918 he became Municipal Housing Architect for Rotterdam. In 1933 he established his own practice. As a young socialist, Oud stimulated an international and regional trend toward functionalism. He wrote magazine articles, acted as a correspondent for Soviet architectural journals, and contributed a book on Dutch architecture to the Bauhausbucher series. Oud's best-known works are for housing schemes in expanding areas. During and after World War II he became involved in larger commercial projects, but these never achieved the clarity of his early housing. Considered a pioneer of Dutch Functionalist architecture, Oud died in Wassenaar, Holland, in 1963.

Fix some printing errors and this is golden.

It is a very good product and a very good tool for reviewing. However on some of the cards there are very obvious misprints on the vocabulary. For example, on the card for ぼ (bo) the word ぼく meaning "I" is translated as "dangerous", ぼうし was romanized as "bentou" and it said bentou meant "grapes" when it means lunch and grapes is ぶどう or "budou". It also romanizes ぼろぼろ as boushi meaning pig, when it translates as boroboro meaning tattered, and boushi is hat while pig is ぶた or buta. Furthermore it says ぼう is benri in romaji, but it still properly translates it as stick. And it says the romaji for ぼうえき is bengoshi when it is boueki.
Even with that said the mistakes are not on very many cards, I think I only noticed something similar on one other card, but they could still be very confusing for a person who is just learning japanese.
In addition the card for みゅ (myu) is completely missing from this set. みゃ (mya) is card#88 and みょ (myo) is #89 so it was somehow skipped over, which is a little inconvenient when practicing and reviewing hiragana.

An excellent aid for learning hiragana, katakana, and vocabulary.

After two months of heavy grind, I couldn't get past the first two rows of the Katakana. I had completed my memorization of the Hiragana in two months and was looking to complete the entire kana, soon. I thought that having the Hiragana done should make the next step easier, not harder. Then my native speaker friend told my that my "r"s were all wrong! I needed a better tool. I picked up "Japanese Hiragana and Katakana Flash Cards". This fit the bill. With the MP3 files in my phone and the flash cards in my purse, I was able to complete the kana in another month and correct my pronunciation of the "r"s. For me, the completion test is write all the syllables for the Hiragana and then Katakana, in order, on a blank sheet of paper. The cards and MP3 files include 6 words that use that syllable. This makes the tool useful beyond just learning the kana. I continue to use the tool for review, to master the glides, and build my vocabulary. If this had been available when I started, I would have chosen it first.

Japanese Learning Power Concentrated: for youth and adults alike

Full disclosure: I teach Japanese at the same institution with Dr. Emiko Konomi, the author of this learning aid. My review of her new product will touch on how this study aid ably reflects her teaching philosophy and practice.

As a Japanese language instructor, I often recommend flash cards to students as a good way for them to learn hiragana, katakana, and kanji. They also help build vocabulary. What I find disheartening is that in the digital age, students favor cheap "app" versions that do very little each slide/"card". Long ago, making one's own flash card set (tora no maki) was an old skill you developed as a student of Japanese -- that is, before the new millennium. It seems a lost art. I thought so until I saw Emiko Konomi's updated Hiragana and Katakana Flash Card set from Tuttle. Everything you'd want on a flash card to learn hiragana and katakana she has put on these cards.

What do I mean by "everything"?

* The cards have the hiragana and katakana beautifully written.
* Stroke order is shown in box-by-box, step-by-step -- little arrows show the direction you should write. This is something many textbooks often leave out.
* 6 Vocabulary items for each mora ("letter") are provided. *I'll have more to say on the nice selection of vocabulary below.*
* Another nice feature is that in the lower right corner where she shows easily confused hiragana/katakana. This will be very helpful for new learners.
* On the back of the cards, the vocabulary is explained/defined in English.
* There is a small pronunciation guide/aid. For example., on "a" the guide explains: "Open your mouth and say, 'Ah,'" says the dentist. --> Ah is italicized, reminding learners that the vowel "a" in Japanese can be easily pronounced by us English native speakers with good ol' dentist "Ah".
* Finally, young learners will probably like Tuttle's smart move to borrow Tim Stout's visual mnemonic phrases/pictures to remember the shape/flow of the character. (Again, on the back of the card as an aid.)

One thing Tuttle doesn't tell you is the target age group for this set. Besides the visual mnemonic I just mentioned, this set doesn't have the cloying, overwrought cute- or kawaii-factor some beginner Japanese sets have. There's a nice balance of basic, useful vocabulary for children, but also some interesting words for adult learners.
For example:
Children learning katakana "a" would enjoy, I imagine, most of the 6 vocab examples: Amerika, anime (!), akusesu (access...yawn), adoresu (address: ok!), aisukuriimu (ice cream: yay), and apaato (apartment: ok!).
Adults could appreciate picking up some of the vocab for katakana "za": piza (pizza), rezaa (leather), Erizabesu (Elizabeth), Gaza (Gaza Strip), reezaa (laser), mazaa (mother). [Notice the nice contrast between the two similar rezaa and reezaa.]
These examples show a nice variety of words young and old alike, living in the 21st century, could use in their daily life. The set consistently captures vocabulary one uses when talking about one's daily life. (Who doesn't eat pizza while watching anime in America thinking about when they will eat ice cream next?). Or: if one wants to talk about things going on in the world today. The katakana (foreign/import word orthography) set particular well represents many countries and cultures. In the guide, Dr. Konomi explains that for those imported words, often very difficult for non-native speakers despite their "home court advantage" as it were, she and Tuttle selected words with "distinctive Japanese flavor, like bebiikaa -- a stroller or pram." I like the katakana selection because it pushes learners to adapt to the Japanese own adaptation of English or other foreign words (i.e., how the Japanese often shorten phrases down to the meaningful units for them). Finally, a word about the hiragana selection: Dr. Konomi has provided a nice variety of basic Japanese vocabulary together with polite-language (keigo) phrases -- the latter is something even many good textbooks often leave out but are crucial for developing fluency. Her set well reflects her philosophy of giving student learners the full range of tools to become fluent in Japanese.

The card set is supplemented by two nice wall charts (posters) that children will particularly enjoy -- they feature all 46 of the visual mnemonics. Another useful supplement is a CD disc with mp3's of a native speaker reading each sound and accompanying vocabulary items. It's very important to hear the correct pronunciation as one practices. (One could easily port them into iTunes and practice listening to the sounds, read the cards, and repeat them for maximum effect.)

The care and thoughtfulness put into this set puts this learning aid in a class by itself. Tuttle's claim that it is the "#1 Language Learning Kit" seems well founded.

Wow what a book...I happened to see this book at a sales convention in EMEA........the best book I have ever seen for helping drive sales......I would absolutely recommend this to anyone trying to motivate and get their sales teams going! Content and perspective is superb....

Gentle Xeno-humor a winner!

How could you possibly not love this little picture book? It is cute, clever, and touching, and gives you a very unlikely affection for a giant bug that wants to put something awful in your chest! I am so glad I picked it up, because I think if you are a fan of the Alien series, or even just H.R. Giger's art, this is a great addition to any collection. I found it instantly endearing, and I especially liked the way the artist paid tribute to the great man whose mind birthed the creature into our culture and our dreams. Far from ridicule, this is a gentle and, at times, even sweet collection of funny little what-ifs involving Jonesy the cat, shopping, and trying to make it as a normal monster in a busy, fast paced world. I really loved this book, and it didn't bother me in the slightest that there are no words. It doesn't need them!

A very cute PICTURE book

This book is very funny and a fun gift for those who love the "Alien" films in your life (this was a Christmas present for my younger brother). I bought this and was very satisfied with it, however it doesn't get the full 5 stars because it is just a straight up picture book. I was under the impression that these pictures (which are all printed nicely and very very funny) would have some funny captions to them but they do not. Overall, a funny and unique present, just know that it is solely a picture book with no writing at all.

Werner Sollors is Henry B. and Anne M. Cabot Professor of English Literature and African American Studies at Harvard University. He previously taught at Columbia University, the Free University of Berlin, and the Universit� degli Studi di Venezia. Teachers beware--poorly proofread edition!

This review is neither of Equiano's text itself, nor of the editorial material (both are excellent for teaching). When I ordered this text for my class, I was dismayed to discover numerous proofreading errors which generated some confusion among students. These tend not to be mispellings, but much worse: substitutions of one word for another, or omissions of important words, as though the whole text had only been run through a spell-checker. Some of these are embarrassing (Equiano's report of "the mortifying circumference of not daring to eat with the free-born children" [33-34]) and others more serious (the omitted word in the crucial sentence "I own offer here the history of neither a saint, a hero, nor a tyrant" in the first paragraph). There is probably one major error for every page of this text. I don't think this has to do with fidelity to the London first edition of 1789, although I haven't checked. The errors seem to have been introduced at Norton. So, sadly, despite Werner Sollors's excellent introduction and the useful maps prefacing the text, I can't recommend this book until Norton gets its act together. Use the texts in either Henry Louis Gates's "Pioneers of the Black Atlantic" or Vincent Carretta's "Unchained Voices" instead--the notes to the latter make it the teaching edition of choice.

A true disaster!

Arrrgggrrh! I am going to teach this text tomorrow and now looked again wistfully at some of the errors I had seen earlier and had forgiven. I saw a "new" one now that I simply cannot forgive! In making a crucial distinction between slavery in his homeland and slavery in the West Indies, Equiano said in the original and all other versions: "...they do no more work than other members of the community." In Sollors's Norton Critical Edition, that becomes "...they do more work than other members of the community," a complete opposite that radically inverts the meaning. This is truly horrible. It didn't make sense in context, thank heavens, so an attentive person would immediately be suspicious.

Interesting indeed, an amazing account of an unusual life

"The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudiah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, The African, written by Himself" is the story of an African man, Olaudiah Equiano (slave name: Gustavus Vassa) who was (evidently) born in 1745 in what is now Nigeria. He was captured by African slave traders, taken to the Atlantic coast, and sold into the slave trade. He was taken to the Caribbean, then Virginia, and eventually Europe. He served a ship's captain and sailed the Mediterranean and on a voyage to explore the North Pole (Greenland). He obtained his freedom and became an author and early anti-slavery activist. The publication of this book made him the best-selling black African author ever (up to that time). This book became a prototype of the "up-from-slavery" autobiography (typified by Frederick Douglass) and is a classic among Atlantic slave narratives.
The book is autobiographical and arranged chronologically, the author detailing events of his African childhood and his years as a slave and eventual self-emancipation. One notable thing about the book is the extent to which it is a travelogue: Equiano clearly enjoys telling travel tales more than decrying the horrors of slavery. His depictions of being a "stranger in a strange land" (e.g., the first time he encounters a clock, a painted portrait, books) are memorable.
The Norton edition is filled with related texts pertaining to Equiano and his times: articles and excerts by other writers about Africa, slavery, abolition, Equiano's birthplace, his literary influences; a useful map; a diagram of a sailing ship, etc. A good choice among several editions of Equiano's book.
