This is the first book ever to summarize in one volume the teachings of the Catholic Church as expressed by the Popes in their official letters. The Papal Encyclicals is of vital interest to readers of all faiths.
Ranging from the very beginning of the Catholic Church down to the present day, this significant collection covers the first epistle of St. Peter, the earliest letters from the succeeding Roman Bishops, and the voluminous directives of subsequent ages in which the Popes have interpreted moral law in regard to the whole span of life, including belief in God, the Catholic Church and its doctrines, birth, marriage, death, political, social and economic events and theories.
Anne Fremantle, the noted writer and religious scholar, has provided historical introductions placing the time and contribution of each Pope and encyclical. Mrs. Fremantle is associate professor at Fordham University, an editor of the Catholic Book Club, contributing editor of Commonweal, and the editor of The Age of Belief: The Medieval Philosophers, published in 1955 as the first of The Mentor Philosophers Series by the New American Library. The introduction to The Papal Encyclicals was written by Gustave Weigel, S.J., Doctor of Sacred Theology of the Gregorian University at Rome, and Professor of Ecclesiology at the Jesuit Theological Faculty, Woodstock College, Maryland.
