My 4 year old daughter loves this book. She loves animals and she also likes hearing about mother-child bonds. She asks for this one over and over. Theres age-appropriate simple information about animal behavior and a lot to discuss together. Highly recommended.

We Love It!

We are addicted to the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science Series! (Kinder-age child)

This book is wonderful. The illustrations are gorgeous! The book is well written. As with all books in this series, there is a section at the end that engages the child with direct questions (experiments for other subjects).

So, How DO Animal Babies Stay Safe?

Starting with the foundation of what a human baby needs to stay safe, the author explains how many different creatures in the animal kingdom require the same or similar care. Beyond this, it teaches that some animal babies don't need their parents at all, and survive on instinct alone. It sprinkles in a few facts about certain needy baby animals in a specific way, i.e., puppies can't see or walk, eagle chicks can't fly until they have full-grown feathers.

It also discusses the different types of homes we see in the animal kingdom, such as nests, dens, and burrows. Next, we're on to how different mothers carry or transport their littles. After a brief, 2-page introduction to the concept of 'camouflage', it takes the reader into how different animals use different methods to alert their young to danger. What follows is how some animals defend their young, by either using a physical defense, or diversion tactics.

One thing that I love, love, love about this (and a lot of the animal LR&FO books) is it's diversity. For example, in "Baby Whales Drink Milk", it will introduce several different kinds of whales, even tho our story is about a specific whale Mama and Baby. In similar fashion, this book introduces a multitude of creatures to your little one, including (but not limited to):

* Saltwater Crabs * Sea turtles * Eagle Chicks * Chipmunks * Wolves * Kangaroos * Leopards * Anteaters * Shrews * Scorpions * Beta Fish

PART ONE The History of Magnesium

CHAPTER 1 The Case for Magnesium: The Personal History of an Element

Mary joked that she felt as though she was constantly being run over by a slow-moving bus. Cramping in her legs startled her awake at night, making her an insomniac, and she had heart palpitations daily. Her doctor also found that she had high blood sugar-not bad enough to need injections of insulin, but he prescribed pills to try to stimulate more insulin production. Finally, frightening panic attacks came out of nowhere and made this vibrant, fun-loving woman afraid to go outside.

To try to relieve her leg cramps, Mary began taking calcium at night, having read that it was good for cramps and sleep. At first, the calcium seemed to help, but after a week or two, the pains got worse. If she yawned and stretched in bed, her calf muscles would seize up and catapult her to the floor, where she would lie frantically massaging her muscles to try to release the spasm. All the next day, she would limp about with a very tender, bruised feeling in her calf.

Although Mary's heart palpitations had improved somewhat after she'd given up her three cups of coffee a day, they too resumed after a few weeks. Every time the palpitations occurred, which was several times a day, they made her cough slightly and catch her breath. She found it frightening, even though her doctor said her stress tests for heart disease were fine and she didn't need further testing with an angiogram.

Both Mary's parents had had adult-onset diabetes, and Mary knew that she should watch her diet, but she was overweight and craved sugary and high-carbohydrate foods that were hard to resist. When the panic attacks hit on top of everything else, Mary knew she had to seek help, and came to my office. She was only fifty-three, far too young to be feeling so bad, and was worried about her future health.

Sam was only forty-nine and experiencing chest pains. At first, he thought they were indigestion, but sometimes the pains would occur in the middle of the night. Concerned, he went to a cardiologist, who found two slightly blocked arteries, not serious enough for bypass surgery. Sam's cholesterol was somewhat elevated, as was his blood pressure, which he attributed to his high-stress occupation and the fact that he had not exercised regularly for the past six months, when he was sidelined with back pain. The cardiologist observed that his arterial blockage would almost inevitably worsen over time and eventually necessitate surgery. The doctor offered him medication for his high cholesterol, told him not to eat butter or eggs, and gave him nitroglycerine to take whenever he had the pain. If the symptoms got worse, he would prescribe other medications. Sam couldn't imagine having to wait to get worse before doing something about his chest pain; he knew there must be something more he could do to avoid surgery and came to me for advice.

At thirty-five, Jan had actually begun to look forward to going through menopause. That's how bad her PMS symptoms were. As soon as those horrible feelings lifted, she was hit by the sledgehammer of menstrual cramps. She also had migraines, which for years had come before her period but now were occurring once or twice a week. She was so miserable that she was considering a complete hysterectomy, with removal of her hormone-producing ovaries, but wondered whether the migraines, since they were happening all month, were not actually hormonal.

Different as their symptoms are, Mary, Sam, and Jan all suffer from magnesium deficiency. While women and men seem equally susceptible to magnesium deficiency, women may become deficient faster than men due to hormonal fluctuations because pound for pound, they have fewer circulating red blood cells, which carry magnesium, and so perhaps less magnesium available. There are a few other gender differences. Because of magnesium's effect on hormonal regulation and vice versa, women can have deficiencies in pregnancy, when breast-feeding, with premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and with dysmenorrhea (painful periods). Osteoporosis, which affects more women than men, is evidence of a deficiency of both calcium and magnesium. An overactive thyroid, which afflicts more women than men, increases the metabolic rate, which uses up magnesium-requiring ATP (adenosine triphosphate-the energy packets made in each cell in the body. Without magnesium, ATP would not be produced). Let's follow Mary, Sam, and Jan and see how they overcame their magnesium deficiencies. When Mary visited me, I charted her health history in detail, according to procedures commonly used by naturopathic doctors, and found several symptoms of magnesium deficiency. In her case it had been made even worse by too much calcium, however, so simple magnesium supplementation wouldn't be enough for Mary. Her diet and lifestyle needed a complete overhaul. I gave Mary a list of magnesium-rich foods that she needed to start eating, which included nuts, beans, greens, and seeds such as sunflower and pumpkin. Mary realized that she'd been avoiding almost all of these foods: She thought nuts were fattening, beans gave her gas, and greens never seemed fresh enough at the supermarket. She had never even thought about eating seeds. After a week of enthusiastically eating a lot more magnesium-rich foods, Mary felt somewhat better. To make sure she could get fresh organic greens regularly, she tracked down a local community-supported agriculture (CSA) program and bought a share in a neighboring organic farm. Mary also learned how to soak and cook beans to prevent them from causing gas, and began eating nuts and seeds rich in magnesium and healthy oils, such as almonds, walnuts, pecans, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds. After her second visit I recommended that she begin taking magnesium supplements. Starting with a dosage of 200 mg a day, we added another 200 mg every two days to build slowly to 600 mg. I cautioned her that it could take months to eliminate magnesium deficiency symptoms and that not all her symptoms would necessarily respond. Within two months, however, Mary was singing the praises of magnesium. Her palpitations and panic attacks had disappeared. Her cravings for sweets were fewer, she was able to control her blood sugar with diet alone, and tests for blood sugar were normal. Her leg cramps were gone, and with them her insomnia. At three months we added calcium along with magnesium so that she would not develop an imbalance of the two. Mary's internist was quite surprised at her improved health and told her to keep up the good work with her diet and supplements. Sam had an inquiring mind, and I encouraged him to start reading about heart disease. He found that up to 30 percent of angina (chest pain) patients do not have badly blocked arteries but may be suffering from an electrical imbalance that is driven by mineral deficiency, most commonly magnesium.1 An astonishing 40 to 60 percent of sudden deaths from heart attack may occur in the complete absence of any prior artery blockage, clot formation or heart rhythm abnormalities, most likely from spasms in the arteries (magnesium is a natural antispasmodic).2,3,4,5 Moreover, he found that magnesium deficiency has been linked to sudden cardiac death. Sam didn't want to wait around for that to happen to him; he was determined to find out what was causing his problem and treat the cause. The more he read, the more intrigued he became. When he read that magnesium deficiency is also associated with muscle pain, especially back pain, that really got his attention, since he had begun having back pain four or five months before he began to develop chest pain.6

With a packet of information on magnesium, Sam went back to his cardiologist. Before the doctor saw him, however, a nurse took Sam's blood pressure; it was unusually elevated, even though at home it was usually only a few points above normal. (Doctor-induced hypertension is commonly reported by patients.) The cardiologist swept into the room and immediately began talking about blood pressure medication. Sam countered with magnesium. The cardiologist visibly cooled and said that magnesium was used to control hypertension that occurred in pregnant women because there were no side effects, but that there were plenty of effective drugs for everyone else. When Sam said he would rather not have side effects either, the cardiologist gathered up his file and told him to come back when he was ready to take medications for his heart disease.

When Sam came back to see me, he was still pretty upset by this encounter; he didn't like the specialist refusing to discuss a possible magnesium deficiency as part of the picture. Sam and I agreed that magnesium seemed the best treatment for him to initiate at this time since he was not willing to take medications.

Sam began adding magnesium to his diet by eating magnesium-rich foods. After a week he felt much calmer, but he still had chest and back pain. So he added magnesium and calcium supplements, and in about three months he felt almost normal.

Among the studies Sam read was one that looked at the correspondence between type A personalities and magnesium deficiency. From the description, Sam realized he was a type A, an aggressive guy who lived on adrenaline, time pressure, and stress. This type of behavior drains the body of magnesium and leads to disorders such as heart disease, muscle spasms, hypersensitivity, and irritability.7 Prolonged psychological stress raises adrenaline, the stress hormone, which depletes magnesium.8 Both Sam's back and chest pain would hit when he was under stress. So Sam worked on ways to control his stress and added more magnesium when he knew he couldn't avoid it. On days when he exercised, Sam added an extra 200 mg of magnesium to his diet, since sweat loss during heavy exercise (cycling and jogging) and working in the heat deplete magnesium. Just drinking water won't replace all the minerals lost. By paying attention to the many factors that affected his mind-body health, Sam lowered his cholesterol and stress levels and reduced his chance of a heart attack and of needing surgery to unblock his arteries.

Jan heard that yoga might help her PMS and painful periods, and she really needed to learn to relax, so she took classes at a local health club. The teacher also ran regular detox and cooking classes, which Jan decided to join when she realized she didn't have to "give up everything" and become a vegetarian. One of the first things Jan learned in the detox class was the importance of having regular bowel movements. Jan was lucky if she had one a week. If the bowel doesn't empty once a day, toxins can be reabsorbed back into the body from the colon. The longer debris sits in the colon, the more fluid is reabsorbed, making stools solid and difficult to pass. PMS and endometriosis, which causes painful periods, are considered by some natural-health experts to worsen with constipation and toxicity.9

During cooking classes, Jan faced the fact that she was a junk food addict. Magnesium is necessary in hundreds of enzymes in the body but is almost totally lost during the processing of packaged and fast foods. The older women in her class were suffering from a variety of problems that included cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis. Is that how she would end up in ten or twenty years if she didn't take care of her health now? Learning how many basic nutrients she had lacked in her diet made her marvel that she wasn't even more ill. Her new diet included greens, beans, nuts, and seeds, which cleared up her constipation and almost eliminated her PMS and painful periods. When she came to see me on the advice of her yoga teacher, it was clear she was on the right track. I recommended that she begin taking a magnesium supplement along with calcium and a multiple vitamin; with all her lifestyle changes, she felt like a new person.

MAGNESIUM, THE SPARK OF LIFE

In a poetic reference to magnesium's crucial role in evolution, Dr. Jerry Aikawa of the University of Colorado calls magnesium the ur-mineral, the most important mineral to man and all living organisms.10 It is critical to the metabolic processes of lowly one-celled living organisms and is the second most abundant element in all cells involved in basically metabolic pathway. Magnesium existed at the beginning of life and was involved with all aspects of cell production and growth. When plants evolved to use the sun as their energy source, magnesium played a pivotal role in the development of chlorophyll. So in both plants and animals, magnesium became an essential mineral involved in hundreds of enzyme processes affecting every aspect of life.

Presently, seventeen minerals are considered essential for human life, and it is quite possible that more minerals will be found to be indispensable as we take more time to study life's mineral connection. Ninety-nine percent of the body's mineral content is made up of seven macrominerals: sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, chlorine, sulfur, and magnesium. The other 1 percent comprises ten trace minerals. As with most minerals, the element magnesium occurs in nature combined with other elements. It joins naturally with sulfur to make Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate), with carbon to make magnesium carbonate, and with calcium to make dolomite. Magnesium is also found in partnership with silica in talc and asbestos. Like calcium, it is an alkaline mineral, which neutralizes acid, and some magnesium compounds are antacids used to treat heartburn.

My first encounter with magnesium was in high school chemistry. Each student was given a thin strip of magnesium and told to light one end carefully. The previous week we had learned that magnesium is the eighth most abundant element, constituting approximately 2 percent of the earth's crust and 1.14 percent of seawater. By comparison, calcium makes up 3 percent of the earth's crust but only 0.05 percent of seawater. There are 4-6 tsp (20-28 g or 2 oz) of magnesium in the body, comprising about 0.05 percent of the body's weight. This information in no way prepared us for the dynamic effect of lighting the magnesium strip. It flared up like an electric sparkler and disappeared in a flash. This effervescent property serves as an important reminder of magnesium's versatility as the spark of life, constantly igniting metabolic reactions throughout the body.

THE BODY IS ELECTRIC

The impulses for any and all movement in the body arise from electrical transmission. These microcurrents of electricity that pass along the nerves were first measured in 1966. Scientists soon discovered that the conductor for these bodily electrical currents was calcium and that magnesium was necessary to maintain the proper level of calcium in the blood.11 More recent research indicates that calcium enters the cells by way of calcium channels that are jealously guarded by magnesium. Magnesium allows a certain amount of calcium to enter a cell to create the necessary electrical transmission, and then immediately ejects the calcium once the work is done. Why? If calcium accumulates in the cell, it causes toxicity and disrupts cell function. Too much calcium entering cells can cause symptoms of heart disease (such as angina, high blood pressure, and arrhythmia), asthma, or headaches. Magnesium is nature's calcium channel blocker.12,13,14

About 60-65 percent of all our magnesium is housed in our bones and teeth. The remaining 35-40 percent is found in the rest of the body, including muscle and tissue cells and body fluids. The highest concentrations are in the heart and brain cells, so it is no wonder that the major symptoms of magnesium deficiency affect the heart and brain. These are also the two organs that have considerable electrical activity measured by EKG (electrocardiogram) and EEG (electroencephalogram). Our blood contains only 1 percent of the body's total magnesium.

Magnesium mostly works inside our tissue cells, producing ATP energy packets for our body's vital force and triggering production all the body's protein structures by revving up messenger RNA. It is also a requirement for the production of DNA, our genetic code. Both of the basic building blocks of life, RNA and DNA, are dependent on magnesium to maintain stable genes.15 In addition to its stabilizing effect on DNA and the structure of chromosomes, magnesium is an essential cofactor in almost all enzyme systems involved in the processing of DNA. Research shows that without sufficient magnesium, DNA synthesis becomes sluggish.

WHAT DOES MAGNESIUM DO?

Magnesium's hundreds of activities in the human body can be divided into five essential categories:16

1. Magnesium is a cofactor assisting enzymes in cata- lyzing most chemical reactions in the body, including temperature regulation.

2. Magnesium produces and transports energy.

3. Magnesium is necessary for the synthesis of protein.

4. Magnesium helps to transmit nerve signals.

5. Magnesium helps to relax muscles.

1. COFACTOR IN CHEMICAL REACTIONS

Enzymes are protein molecules that stimulate every chemical reaction in the body. Magnesium is required to make these enzymes work.

2. PRODUCING AND TRANSPORTING ENERGY

Magnesium and the B-complex vitamins are excellent examples of energy nutrients, because they activate enzymes that control digestion, absorption, and the utilization of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Because magnesium is involved with hundreds of enzymatic reactions throughout the body, deficiency can affect every aspect of life and cause a score of symptoms. Of the 325 magnesium-dependent enzymes, the most important enzyme reaction involves the creation of energy by activating adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the fundamental energy storage molecule of the body. ATP may be what the Chinese refer to as qi or life force. Magnesium is required for the body to produce and store energy. Without magnesium there is no energy, no movement, no life. It is that simple.

3. SYNTHESIZING PROTEIN

Magnesium is used in synergy with dozens of other vitamins and minerals to create structural components of the body. Under the direction of magnesium, enzymes and nutrients modify the building blocks from food to create the body. Without magnesium, there is no body. RNA and DNA, which contain the genetic blueprints for the formation of all the protein molecules in the body, are also dependent on magnesium.

High blood pressure? Depressed? Constipated? This book is for you!

My husband and I are in our early 50's and generally in good health and fitness and neither of us are on any medications. We take a few vitamins and supplements almost daily but never gave much thought to adding mineral supplements. However, we have been having unusual symptoms lately, muscle twitches, muscle soreness for no apparent reason, irritability/edginess, insomnia, heart flutters, and my husband was recently dx with high blood pressure, although we think he has actually had it for many years. It was the shocker diagnosis that woke us up. His doctor wanted to monitor it for a short while since he has no other risk factors before going on medication but submitted that he will eventually have to be on meds for it. We bought a home BP monitor to track it daily. After reading the side effects of BP medicine, we knew we wanted to avoid that if at all possible. We immediately cut salt way down in our diets. Although my BP is normal/low, I did it so I would be able to eat the same as he does. I like to cook and considered it a challenge to make good food without salt. Besides, sodium puffs my eyes, so I suppose vanity put me on a low-sodium diet too - ha! The low salt diet was horrible at first, I will admit, but after a few of weeks and experimenting with spices and vinegars, we are now used to the taste of foods without added salt and it is really good, so stick with it! We also started exercising more and he lost 20 lbs. I lost nothing, of course, except a little water weight. About 2 months after going low salt and seeing some lowering of his BP numbers but still not great, my search for natural ways to lower blood pressure brought me to this book. What an eye opener it was. Here I thought we were eating pretty healthy, but I found out that that isn't enough. And I learned that some of our habits were flushing out the minerals - like drinking tea and coffee - and my husband being a type-A personality, hyper and stressed - made it worse. And there just isn't enough magnesium in our foods anymore and that deficiency was causing so many of the symptoms we were experiencing. And the difficult thing is that these symptoms can sneak up slowly so one doesn't even realize there is a problem. You might think it's just normal aging or your personality, but if you are edgy, grouchy, sad for no reason, depressed, quick to flare up with anger, tired but can't sleep, unable to enjoy what you used to love... you may just be magnesium deficient... and it's an easy fix.

Since reading this book we both are now taking 400mg of magnesium a day and the changes in just a couple of weeks have been incredible. For the first time in probably 10 years we are both sleeping through the night like babies...almost every night...and dreaming crazy dreams! Before my husband always said he never dreamed and we learned that is a symptom of mag deficiency. Now we are both so much ore relaxed and calm. It has taken the edge off, and the twitches and soreness is dramatically less. But the most exciting for us has been his blood pressure numbers. They are way down. From the 160's/high 90's to the 120's/low 80's and 70's and even yesterday he had a lower number in the 60's. Unbelievable for him.

I have to mention that our symptoms were actually getting a little worse right before we started on Magnesium because I had read that the BP meds were types of diuretics. So I found a natural diuretic in hibiscus (Jamaican) tea and it does work well to flush out the water. But what I learned from this book is that diuretics can cause dehydration. This can thicken the blood and can actually cause high BP and also constipation and flushes out the minerals, making magnesium levels even lower. And we both were drinking hibiscus tea (which is so delicious by the way) daily. So now that we learned through this book how diuretics can make things worse, we are limiting our hibiscus tea for when we feel we have overloaded on salt when eating out. But we will be sticking with the magnesium supplements. It is like turning back the clock 20 years. My husband is like a new man.

I am not discrediting doctors, I think very highly them and have a lot of respect for their knowledge, but NO ONE mentioned to us to try magnesium before suggesting going on meds. Either they don't know about natural remedies or liability risk encourages them to write a script. Maybe the fix is just too simple. Or maybe it doesn't work for everyone so they suggest it to no one. Do you own research. You have to take control of your own health. If you've gotten this far in your research to be reading these reviews, you are on the right track! Get this book!

Mar 2017 - Update: We are still taking our 400 mg of magnesium a day. We both recently had our blood work done and had magnesium levels tested just to make sure we weren't over doing it and it showed our mag levels were perfectly normal. (But I read that the blood test isn't that accurate and one could still be deficient even if the levels show normal.) And I wanted to update that my husband's blood pressure is consistently NORMAL. He continues to exercise, has cut way back on sugar, and mostly is keeping the extra 20 lbs off. He no longer consistently snores, thanks to the weight loss I suspect. We both are sleeping better than we have for years thanks to that and the magnesium. And on a positive note for me, I no longer struggle with constipation. I have celiac disease and constipation comes with the territory. But the nightly magnesium dose has cured that. I can eat chocolate again (which is very constipating) without a problem. That alone is worth it for me. :) We are no longer experiencing any muscle twitches or mysterious aches and my husband consistently says how good he feels. It is truly amazing. He is so much more mellow and able to enjoy life, no longer bug-eyed and on the edge all the time. And I want to mention that we take Magnesium Asporotate (Vitacost) which is a blend of different sources of magnesium. Read about which ones are best absorbed. Magnesium Chloride is also well absorbed. But if all you can get is Magnesium Citrate, it is better than nothing. This book will tell you which ones are better absorbed and which ones aren't - Mag. Oxide isn't. And take a B6 when you take your mag or a good natural-sourced raw B-Complex. That also helps with absorption. But most importantly, read this book. I am not an expert, only giving our experiences, but she is!

EVERYONE should read this book -- medical professionals should read it twice

First, I want to say, I have no affiliation with the author, or the publisher, and I was not offered any kind of incentive to write this review.

After reading through the comments and also responding to what people have said back to me (my own family): I wanted to add this:

PLEASE stop thinking in terms of "this is yet another pill or drink". You can get easily enough daily magnesium in less than 30 seconds: Apply magnesium Chloride TOPICALLY to your skin. It might sting, but you can dilute it with lotion or water. Not trying to sell a product, but trying to give people an idea of "what works!", I am right now using Trace Mineral Research Ionic Magnesium (GNC, and Amazon), and putting some in a glass spray bottle with essential oils. Magnesium oil makes an EXCELLENT deodorant (most mineral salts do), and you spray it and rub it in. Next I use the dropper and put 1 dropper on my body (with lotion) and rub it in. DONE! I can use more if I want.

By far, this is the best book I've read in about 8 months. I think they should give Carolyn Dean a key to the city, and make her Queen for a Day. That is how important I think her contribution is her. If physicians' goals are to improve the quality of life, she has made a huge contribution. I am extremely grateful to have read this book.

That said: EVERYONE should read this book. I mean it. In three days, I have told 15 people about it. I am 62 and I found myself in the pages. In the past three days, my supplementation with magnesium (mostly chloride, applied topically) has brought about a large change.

But this review is not really about me--if you will read this, apply the concepts, and use the products (yes, I know she is pushing her own product--who cares?), you can save a life.

One of the stories in the book was about sports players who were given calcium (they should have had magnesium, adminstered long before) on a hot day, and there was at least one death. Reading this, the scene came to life for me (I was, an am, still horrified). I've seen young people die in extreme situations because a "knowledgable adult" told them what to do.

Then the story about the "model" patient who lived a medially ideal life, and ate "correctly", yet still had a heart attack. Magnesium changed the picture for her.

Then the concept of the Monday 9 am heart attack, because of a lack of magnesium. Why women crave chocolate during their periods (cocoa has magnesium).

Finally the realization that so much of what I am experiencing (I am a healthy, non smoking, 62 year old adult, taking no prescriptions), was exactly what was being described in the book.

No more. I am changing this equation, starting today. Because of the additional magnesium, my energy has gone way up, and my sleep is much better, and I don't need naps (I was taking extra D3, and wondering why my bones hurt, but not after taking magnesium), and I am now going to purse a more healthy regimen.

Important health information your family physician may never speak to you about.

This little book is very dense with important information and I cannot begin to even tell you what a life-changing experience it has been for me. If you are seriously looking to feel better and improve your health overall, this book will help you do just that. One interesting point I would like to make here is that whatever your ailment may be, it probably is due to a magnesium deficiency.

You are probably wondering how I can make this statement, however, it is a true fact that magnesium deficiency causes many different symptoms and even diseases, depending on the individual. Even though some people share similar symptoms, some may be extreme depending on how magnesium deficient they are due to daily nutrition. Others may have more subtle symptoms if they are getting a little more magnesium in their diet, this also includes our children, there health, and the current epidemic of obesity, autism and ADHD in our society.

However, the simple fact of the matter, and the main point of this book is that there is an epidemic in our society because of magnesium deficiency. Which has been made worse since the "Got Milk?" was licensed to the National Milk Processor Board (MilkPEP) in 1995. Other agencies following the push including to this day the NIOH (National Institutes of Health) and other government agencies who stream into the mainstream society that we don't get enough calcium in our diets when the fact is we get more than we need. Which is why people are so sick.

In the 1950's the soil used in farming had already began to be depleted of this mineral, it has only gotten worse since then. Farmers do not add this mineral to the soil and food grown in the soil do not contain this mineral and if they do it is in minuscule properties. So much less so that even if you think you are eating healthy by eating a healthy diet and incorporating fruits and vegetables in your diet, you are not getting enough of this mineral. Unless you are eating organic foods grown in magnesium enriched soil you definitely are not getting the magnesium your body needs. Creating an imbalance in your body of too much calcium which builds up and causes a wide variety of symptoms and problems to your health and the health of loved ones, friends and family.

So, if you are like me and wonder why, even though you eat healthy, stay away from high fat, processed foods, corn syrup, soda, and other unhealthy foods, exercise regularly, yet still feel lousy and are having health issues you need to look into magnesium as a daily supplement. If you are not like me and are having more serious health issues you seriously need to look into magnesium supplementation.

One thing you cannot do is go asking your doctor for a magnesium blood test, as Dean points out in the book. Our blood only carries 1% of magnesium, the rest, all 99%, is stored in our body tissues. So a blood test will only tell you and your doctor that you are not magnesium deficient. This is another reason why people are not aware of their deficiency, because it is not picked up in a serum blood test. However, if you really want to know at all costs, Dean does speak of less than a handful of other specific tests that you can have done to find out your levels.

I, however, am not adamant about being tested or recommending a test for two reasons. The main one being you cannot overdose on a magnesium supplement. Whatever your body does not need comes out in your stool and urine. If you are sick of feeling ill, then you need to take that fact into consideration. Magnesium will not hurt you. The only symptom you will have if you are taking too much is diarrhea, which is not totally a reason to cut back and I will tell you why.

There are many forms of magnesium out on the market today. Some are less tolerable than others, depending on each individual and their bodies ability to process or break it down. This is one major reason to either read this book or study other information on magnesium deficiency from a reliable source, as you want to make sure to get the right information.

Even the author herself has already amended this book by including a few more pages of information I found important for me. You can receive a copy of this information free on her website when you sign up for her newsletter.

I, however, will save you some legwork here with a little information that has helped me and will help you whether you have a sensitive digestive system like mine or you just would like to take the maximum absorbable magnesium out on the market because of your symptoms or illness to get better as quickly as possible. On Dean's website she talks about how she came across the most highly absorbable magnesium only after she wrote The Magnesium Miracle. You can say maybe she did not do her homework before writing this book or you can just say that the information was just not available to her at the time. It really does not matter, as I am sure she did not do it intentionally and this is why she provides this additional information on her website for free.

Dean also speaks how she is not able to tolerate many of the magnesium supplements on the market due to her sensitive digestive system and that raised a red flag for me right away, as I have these same problems. I had actually bypassed the forms of magnesium which could cause me diarrhea, like the citrate, after working on a review of Natural Calm from the company Natural Vitality. I am not saying this magnesium did not work for me as it did wonders for me right away. However a few days after I had started it, I was having loose stools due to not having a gallbladder and a sensitive digestive system. If you are prone to constipation or do not have sensitive digestive issues this is a great form of magnesium, in fact, I started giving it to my mother and she is doing fine with it.

For me however, I switched over to taking a chelate form of magnesium which is easier for my body to break down and absorb. There is also a magnesium oil that can be applied to the skin which bypasses the digestive tract and also eliminates the problem of diarrhea. Since I do poorly when it comes to remembering to apply something to my body, I decided to go with an oral form.

I am now moving onto the form of magnesium that Carolyn Dean has listed on her website that she came across after writing this book. This magnesium is called Angstrom Liquid Magnesium and can be found easily online at many health outlets or through the manufacturer itself, Angstrom. This magnesium not only will not give me any sort of diarrhea or upset stomach but it also is the most highly absorbable form there is on the market. It is 99.9% absorbable by the body, where the other forms of magnesium are less then 40% absorbable depending on the type. All different types of magnesium and absorbability information is included in The Magnesium Miracle except for information on the Angstrom magnesium.

Returning to the novella—possibly his brightest canvas—King provides four raw looks at the limits of greed, revenge, and self-deception. The first, “1922,” is an outright masterpiece and takes the form of the written confession of one Wilf James. Back in 1922, see, Wilf killed his wife to prevent her selling off part of the farm, but tossing her corpse down the well didn’t exactly stop her. It’s Poe meets Creepshow by way of Steinbeck and carries the bleak, nearly romantic doom of an old folk ballad about murderin’ done wrong. A pair of the remaining tales feature female protagonists considering hiding others’ crimes: “Big Driver” is a rape-revenge tale about a writer of cozy mysteries who ends up in the uncoziest of situations, while “A Good Marriage” stars a wife whose husband of 27 years turns out to be hiding an unimaginable secret. Though the shortest story by far, “Fair Extension” is no slouch, submitting for your approval one Mr. Elvid (get it?), who is out to shine a little light on our blackest urges. Rarely has King gone this dark, but to say there are no stars here is crazy. King's comments on the human condition

In his afterword to this book, King writes that he wants to 'provoke an emotional,even visceral, reaction in my readers'. Well, I do believe he has succeeded in this book. So much of King's writing explores dark worlds that are only real in our imaginations and nightmares. In "Full Dark No Stars" he writes about the dark sides of men (and women) that we actually see and experience in real life. And, to me, that makes this book much more difficult to read. I had to pause and take a break a few times throughout the book - to catch my breath, to banish disturbing images behind the curtain again.

The first story "1922" is about love and how twisted it can become, and it is about greed. And it is about normal, everyday hardworking people that make wrong decisions - for a lot of reasons. Of course King is very graphic in describing these mistakes and the consequences.

"Big Driver" is going to be read differently by male and female readers, I believe. There aren't too many male readers that will fully understand a woman's fear of rape - the powerlessness, the violation, the fear and panic that continue long after the physical act of rape is done and the woman is left with the aftereffects for the rest of her days. I think King did a great job capturing this story from the female perspective. And understanding the anger - no, rage - that could power a woman to exact vengeance for this devastation.

"Fair Extension" was probably my least favorite of the stories but still very good. What would you trade to the dark powers if you were dying and were offered the chance to live? I think King could have done more with this story. It was the shortest of the four and to me came across a little flippant. Maybe that was planned.

"A Good Marriage" was superb. I kept trying to put myself in the wife's position (which is what King wanted in all these stories, I think). It was easy to try to imagine. I'm close to the age of the wife in the story and have been married about the same length of time. I have grown children. What would I do if I discovered that the man I thought I was married to had been deceiving me for years and was truly a human monster?

I love stories and books that make me think and King's books usually succeed in doing that, in one way or another. I like his short story or novella collections. He really can up the ante when he has a limit on the number of words he can use. He pares the story down to the essentials and there is a wonderful rhythm and freshness in his shorter works.

I also liked the Afterword in the book. King took a few words to try to explain some of the Whys of these stories, which he doesn't do too often. And I appreciated the glimpse into a bit of his creative process.

King's latest collection of stories lives up to its title--full of dark characters doing bad things

Stephen King's latest collection of stories "Full Dark No Stars" certainly lives up to its title; we get four stories with characters who have awful things happen to them or do awful things to those around them. That's nothing unusual for a King story but the difference here is that most of the supernatural trappings that we expect from King are minimal to nonexistent in these stories; he goes for a more realistic vibe in these stories. He's done this before in some of his other collections as well but not to this extreme--these are horror stories where the horror derives almost exclusively from human nature.

SPOILERS:

The first story "1922" focuses on a farmer who decides to murder his wife with the assistance of his teenage son when his dominance as head of the house is threatened. She wants to sell off the land she inherited to a large hog farm that will ultimately pollute their farm. The resulting burtal murder haunts both men driving them to the brink of insanity.

The second story in the collection "Big Driver" focuses on a mystery writer who after making a personal appearance decides to take a rural deserted route home. A flat tire and a large stranger who offers to help her repair it cause her life to fall apart in a story that echoes elements of James Dickey's novel Deliverence.

The third and most King-like (because it has a supernatural element) story "Fair Extension" focuses on a loan officer at a bank who is dying of cancer. The loan officer meets the Devil at a roadside stand where deals are made. He wants the exceptional life of his now hated best friend--who he carried throughout school and has had success that the loan officer feels he deserved--discovering that as part of the deal his "friend" must suffer. The catch--the Devil wants 15% of the loan officer's income for the next 15 years of an extended life and he must watch his friend suffer.

The fourth "A Good Marriage" takes us behind-the-scenes of a woman who discovers his "good marriage" has allowed her husband to carry on a thriving life as a serial killer. The story focuses more on the impact the discovery has on her life rather than the serial killer himself.

END OF SPOILERS:

King's latest has stories that vary in quality but all of them--as dark and filled with some of the most truly evil characters I've seen in a King book--are worthwhile. They lack the redemption that often appears in King's work for the characters and we really don't learn to care about these characters like we do in many of King's novels but that isn't the point here--King wanted to create characters that were difficult to like in extreme circumstances that have to face the darker side of human nature and their own dark side as well. Whether or not you enjoy "Full Dark, No Stars" will depend on whether or not you are looking for pure entertainment from this book or a series of more complex, ambitious stories that don't offer the easy answers that appear in some of King's work.

"Full Dark, No Stars" isn't an easy book to like but if you find the characters, their situations and the lack of redemption for these characters makes this a difficult read for the average King fan but for those who stick with it (and enjoy the stories), you'll find a series of gripping, involving stories with characters as complex as any King as created. "Full Dark, No Stars" lives up to its title and, as a result, may not be for everyone. I'd suggest reading an excerpt before purchasing the book to see if it appeals to you. It is, however, one of King's most fascinating and ambitious novels yet demonstrating that he continues to grow as a novelist. This isn't an easy book to like--but if you do and are drwan into it as I was, you'll enjoy one of King's richest works in years.

Confronting and Compelling - King at his best

Each of these novellas delivers a hard, tough and bleak perspective on humanity. Yes, we find characters with whom we can sympathise, but these have been brought into bad places by others whose terrible deeds wreak havoc. There is plenty of violence, some of it sexual, and each story is tense and taut. Gripping is an understatement.

"The souls of humans have become poor and transparent things" says the Devil in Fair Extension, the least violent but for me, the most bleak of the tales. These words could serve as an epigraph to the collection. It is visceral, disturbing and although King says in the Afterword that he doesn't want to make readers think as they read, yet throughout Full Dark, No Stars I was challenged intellectually as well as emotionally. What would I do in, or following, the situations depicted here? How do we grapple with the age old problem of evil? The concept of revenge is another age old philosophical and literary concern, wrenched open again for our consideration by Stephen King.

If you are a King fan you'll have this book already. If you are an occasional reader of his work, then I urge you to grab a copy asap. It ranks with his best.

"What's happened to you is rare," my friend Mark said to me just before I made one of the most important decisions of my life--the decision to quit my job and become a full-time writer. My last day at work also happened to be my thirtieth birthday, which made it a milestone in many respects. The truth, though, is the day itself was less significant than the process it took to get there.

When asked how I got to this point, I struggle to give an intelligent answer. The experience of finding your calling can be both mysterious and practical. It takes effort but also seems to happen to you at times. What I've come to understand is that finding your purpose is more of a path than a plan: it involves twists and turns that you never expected. Ultimately these surprises lead you to your destiny. And once you arrive at what you thought was the destination, you realize it's only another leg in the journey.

This book is a description of that path, as well as the steps it takes to navigate it.

Everyone, it seems, is searching for a purpose, for something to satisfy their deepest desires. I believe that "something" is a calling.

What is a calling? You will hear me use the word interchangeably with the terms vocation and life's work, but quite simply, it is the reason you were born.

When I began working on this project, I thought I knew what the process of pursuing a dream looked like, but what I found surprised me. Discovering your calling, it turns out, isn't quite so simple. The journey looks different for each person, but there are common themes that consistently emerge. If we look at those themes, we can identify a pattern that will help us understand our own vocations a little better.

What if what happened to me wasn't so rare? What if everyone has a calling? That was the question that sent me on my journey. The people whose stories appear in this book, many of whom I personally interviewed, are not extraordinary, in the sense that you've heard their stories before.

They are not typical case studies for success, and that was intentional. In these seemingly ordinary accounts, I think we understand our own stories, which often feel far too ordinary for our liking, a little better. Some readers might be disappointed with the subjectivity of such a book. But this is the way we live our lives--not as research projects and book reports--but as anecdotes and emotions. And in each experience, we find certain truths we might otherwise miss. My hope is these stories connect with you in ways that plain facts cannot, and in reading them, you too are changed.

The Art of Work was not the book I intended to write but ended up being the one I was supposed to write. A calling is like that too, I suppose. You Want How Much for Shipping and Handling?

I first encountered Jeff Goins through his website while researching ways to generate an income online. My first impression was that he was another web "Guru" looking to sell me something. I wasn't impressed initially as I scanned over his website. I saw an "artsy" type who I didn't seem to connect to right away. I am a scientist and tend to be more analytical in my thinking. I didn't dig too deep during that first web site visit. I did see that he was giving away his book for the price of shipping and handling.
As an ardent bibliophile, as many of you likely are, this caught my attention. Being the jaded soul that I am I figured that he would jack up the shipping and handling to cover the production costs of his book. So I ambled on over to Amazon and saw that it looked to be a legitimate book and that it wouldn't be released for another month. I figured that I could part with the $6.95 without any true sacrifice and went ahead and ordered it. I thought that was that, and I would see it in the mail in a month or so. Boy was I ever wrong!
So here it is 33 days later and I must say that I completely misjudged Jeff. I had my blinders on and would have missed some real personal growth had Jeff not knocked them off my face. So what changed my mind, you ask? Well the first thing was that I received an email from Jeff the same day that I ordered the book with a link to a full version of the book in PDF format. So I wouldn't have to wait a month after all to start reading it. That was nice.
I also received a link to a writing challenge called My 500 Words. Jeff challenges you to write at least 500 words a day for 31 days, and he emails you a prompt each morning to get you going. These aren't namby-pamby prompts, but ones that make you think and push you out of your comfort zone every day. As a scientist I write and review reports every day, but these are technical reports. Would I be able to keep up with 500 words a day on topics more concerned with the human element than chemical elements? Only one way to find out - start writing. Well I finished the challenge two days ago and my total word count was over 41,000 in thirty-two separate entries. As it turns out I guess I do have a lot to say. If you haven't tried the challenge do yourself a favor and start it today. If you are not careful the last day of the challenge may be the first day of your new writing career. I now own four of Jeff's books and my mind is opened even further each time I read some of his work.
Jeff is a real inspiration as well are those he featured in The Art of Work. I have read the PDF version and have been inspired in so many ways by all of those who Jeff writes about. I think that we have all experienced each some of the trials that many of these people have gone through in the seven stages of discovery. For me the book really did a great job of identifying those stages, and then making them relevant to me through real world experiences of everyday people like myself.
Jeff managed to somehow break through that armor I keep around me, and to get me thinking and feeling outside of the box. He managed to do this with a series of e-mails that truly challenged me to be a better person. I have never met Jeff, but I am really glad that I tripped into his website that day over a month ago. Get this book and begin a new journey towards your true lot in life.

The Art of Work has put a real wrench in my retirement plans

As someone who has already been functioning in what seemed to be "my calling" for over two decades, I wondered if Jeff Goins' latest book would have anything much to offer me. Not because I'm a know-it-all but because I wondered if I had passed my prime or peak.

Believe me when I say it had plenty to offer.

Not only did this book rip to shred some erroneous notions that were long standing in my life, it presented what I believe is a better view of life, work, purpose and most important of all legacy.

Sometimes I fall for the mistaken notion that doing is more important than becoming. After reading The Art of Work I've been reminded that who I am becoming, through both the good times and bad, is what matters most. It is also what people will remember.

The same is true of you as this book clearly brings to light.

I believe that the takeaway from The Art of Work will be unique to each individual who reads it. At first, I thought it might be for people in their 20's and 30's but, as I read along further, I realized that since it was speaking to me that was not the case.

I found each one of the stories used in this book to be touching and inspiring. They were all well told by the author. And, what I liked is that they didn't detract from the central message of the book. They weren't fillers but instead used to help with making essential points which I appreciated.

My favorite chapters, during my first reading of the book (and there will be more) include: Pivot Points, The Portfolio Life, Your Magnum Opus, and the conclusion.

I think I related most to the final story of the book. A successful man, in the eyes of the world, upon retiring discovers yet another purpose. When asked what his most meaningful work was it was not that which brought him the most money but rather that which brought him the most fulfillment and had the greatest impact on other lives.

I want to be like that man.

This is the second time that I've read one of Goins' books on the brink of what felt like "retirement." Darn that guy. He keeps derailing my plans to chill out and become a beach bum for the next twenty plus years.

Secretly (or not since I've now shared it with the world) I am thankful for the ways this young writer, who continually matures with each book that he writes, challenges me to view life a little differently and re-access things.

His book Wrecked really turned my life upside down. I've never recovered to be honest. The Art of Work has caused a great stirring as well.

It has helped me to reframe much of my life, up until this point, in ways I had not before considered. It has also pretty much caused me to ditch the "live like a hermit" retirement plans. Although uncertain what the next pivot point will be, I now know what to look for and am continuing to build my portfolio in the meantime.

If you hate your job, feel unfilled in life, wonder what your purpose is or if you even have one, this book will be a great help to you. And if, like me, you have wondered if your greatest days are behind you it also will help answer that question as well.

Just be prepared to do some work if you want to discover your "calling" or "purpose" because anything of value requires a little elbow grease!

There’s a lot to grab hold of in Goins’ book about discovering “the reason you were born”

You could say I’m a vocational enthusiast. It all started when someone handed me a copy of Let Your Life Speak by Parker J. Palmer during my senior year of college. Its short-term effect was giving me the courage to say no to a stable, but stressful night job at the college union. The long-term effect? I discovered my “something I can’t not do” was helping other people grab hold of their something.

There’s a lot to grab hold of in Goins’ book about discovering “the reason you were born.” (No pressure.) Seven themes anchor his ideas - Awareness, Apprenticeship, Practice, Discovery, Profession, Mastery, and Legacy – and each theme is illustrated with anecdotes from the lives of ordinary people, including Goins himself.

While Goins is a Christian and cites Christian tradition to make some of his points, religiosity doesn’t overwhelm the reader. The practical takes precedent over the philosophical.

In the chapter on Awareness, a story illustrates how noticing what makes us different from other people can be a source of both pain and purpose. In the chapter on Practice, we see an example of how our love for something, like painting, might be honed into a skill set, like web design, without making us feel like a sell-out. “Your vocation can evolve,” Goins writes in the chapter on Profession, and I breathe a sigh of relief. Now, nearly a decade after my first brush with Let Your Speak, I hear from young wanderers picking it up for the first time and feeling the pressure to find their path once and for all.

“There is a thread we follow,” I tell them, paraphrasing a poem from William Stafford called “The Way It Is,” but with it we weave many selves over the course of one life. Much of Goins’ writing seems best suited to our independent selves, the selves that get to manifest their own destiny with the support but not permission of loved ones. His advice to “do what’s required of us,” “push ourselves to the point of exhaustion,” and “keep moving,” does not resonate in my own life where I work part-time in order to pursue the delight of being human with my husband, my friends, my church, and a whole ecosystem of people on whom my choices bear. A book on how two, independent adults discern vocational rhythm together? Now that I’d be clawing to read.

“[Vocation] is a journey of becoming,” Goins rightly points out, and I’ll take all the worthy companions (and books) that come along the way.
