Thomas Barlow has been a research fellow at Oxford University and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a columnist with the Financial Times in London, and Scientific Advisor to the Minister for Education, Science and Training in the Australian Government. He currently works as an independent advisor to governments, universities, and other R&D-intensive organisations.

Great insight into Innovation and Megapowers

Between the Eagle and the Dragon is an excellent read, dispassionate, fair and balanced. The book contains well researched and interesting economic history about the two megapowers. So many people have opinions about the rise of China but I think this will be a good companion for you if you want facts rather than assertions. There is also excellent food for thought for countries who trade and partner actively with both nations.
I also found the commentary and insights into innovation and what drives and contributes to an innovative climate to be fascinating. This topic is very timely with debates going on at the organisation, academic and policy levels into "how can we be more innovative"? - I definitely recommend this book for people who are interested in innovation in general.
The author writes very well, is an independent thinker and was recently named by The Australian as one of the most influential people in Australian higher education.

Fascinating analysis of the state of innovation in China and US

A fascinating book which looks in detail at the state of innovation in China and the US. Analyses not just the level of innovation occurring within each superpower, but explains the complex cultural, historical, political and economic factors behind current trends. We're in an incredibly interesting period where American technological dominance really is under challenge.

The China US comparison grounded in reality

There has been a lot of talk about China and the United States. Much of this talk is not underpinned by reality. This book assembles a stack of extremely useful data and information about innovation, science and education in both countries and offers a balanced perspective for people in all countries trying to come to grips with this new dichotomy.
So many people these days are future gazing. It is refreshing to read a grounded succinct assessment of such a big subject.
