I can't really recommend this book highly enough

I can't really recommend this book highly enough. The first half of the book was a little frustrating, as I consistently objected to what I took to be her Marxist view of economics, but by the end I realized how her vision of work and love come together and was able to more clearly understand what she was doing in the first half of the book. This book should really be back in print.

Looks like a very good read

I just ordered this book based on the recommendation of a good friend. This recommendation was kind of based on our mutual interest in the Gnostic Gospels and a poem I had just written. after ordering this book I looked up the author on the internet and was really impressed with the body and focus of her work. I suggested to my friend that she and I both write some sort of review her so people could get some idea of what a good writer she is and the body of her work.

So I haven't gotten the book yet, and when I do, I will write a new or revised review. Until them I want to include a little bit of what I found on Wiki search.

Dorothee S�lle's theological thinking

"I believe in God who created the world has not done such a thing that always must remain, not the ruled by eternal laws, which are immutable, not by natural systems of rich and poor, experts and uninformed, rulers and extradited. I believe in God, who wants the appeal of living and the change in all states through our work, our policy".

The idea of a God who was "in heaven in all its glory" while Auschwitz was organized was "unbearable" for Dorothee S�lle. God has to be protected against such simplifications. For some people Dorothee S�lle was a kind of prophet of Christianity, who abolished the separation of theological science and practice of life, while for others she was a heretic, whose theories couldn't be united with the traditional understanding of God, and her ideas were therefore banned as a theological cynicism.

Some of S�lle's provocative statements:
"Vietnam is Golgatha."
"The Third World is a permanent Auschwitz."
"Every theological statement must be a political statement as well."
"God has no hands except from our hands."
"We should eat more at the Eucharist and we should pray more when eating."

So that may give you a little indication of what she writes about, she certainly doesn't sound constrained by political correctness but has some strong sense of the nature of spirit in life. I look forward to reading her book and providing a better review soon.

Difficult to read

Lakdawala goes way overboard with lyrical fantasy in his comments. More than half are attempts at poetry, which drown the actual content. The games and analysis may be good, but the over-embellished comments make it painful to read. Some readers might like it, but I like my chess books to talk about chess, not the King's adventures or the Bishop's morals. Do look over a sample before deciding to buy.

Carlsen the next Capablanca

I bought this book because of Carlsen's playing style. Even though he is World Champion he reminds me a bit like Capablanca.
Although he is still young he has a long way to go, you never know what heights he can achieve.
The games are very instructive and easy to follow with plenty of diagrams. I enjoy playing over his games. If your a Carlsen fan then this book is for you. The games speak for themselves. Only three other players in the history of chess were born with the faculty of near-omniscient intuition: Morphy, Capablanca and Fischer, and now its time to add a fourth name to the list: Carlsen!
Definitely a great book on Carlsen. A must have.

Emotions grow high under that Montana sky

While visiting her best friend Cassidy she becomes fast friends with the shy Carter, Cassidy's future brother-in-law. But things ended badly when the tabloids ruined their innocent relationship. Carter had always been one of her biggest fans, she was his true dream woman. Since his failed marriage, he had given up on true love. It was easier to dream than to give his heart away to more pain. Meeting Summer was his dream come true, but fear kept him from giving his all. It is so much easier to walk away than be faced with the pain of a broken heart. Now Summer has come back with a mission and she is not going to let Carter shut her out. But when they decide to take the next step, the dark cloud of impending pain still hovers over head. "The heart wants what it wants, but will love truly find it's way?

"Carter" is the third book in SJ McCoy's "Remington Ranch Series." I have read all of SJ McCoy's books including her "Summer Lake Series" and I truly believe she has a winner with "Carter". I personally read it in one night, I could not put it down. Summer and Carter are perfectly developed and the storyline flows effortlessly. It is the perfect love story. It is more than rich, country music star meets cowboy, it is pure emotion. I have described SJ McCoy as an artist with words, this time she has pulled off a masterpiece.

Love , love love this book ! Carter is every woman's dream love , Wish we could all have the love Carter and Summer share ! SJ McKoy always delivers a beautifully written story that you can relate to and escape from the real world , have read every book this author has written and they just keep getting better, can't wait for Beaus story! Carter Will Steal Your Heart

Carter is book 3 of the Remington Brothers series. The series is a sweet contemporary story. There is little angst, and there is no darkness. You can just sit back, relax, and read about a wonderful group of people. I suggest that you read the other two books before you read this one. The other books will help you understand the characters’ backgrounds. I have been waiting on Carter’s story. He totally won me over in Shane’s book. The character SJ made him to be is like a real life sweetheart. Summer and Carter met in Shane’s book. Summer is a country music star having an inner war on whether or not she wants to continue on her current path. She is trying to recover from vocal chord problems, which we were made aware of in Shane. Carter is just the sweetest man with a big crush on her. He has been hurt terribly in his past and is hesitant to open himself up for more hurt. You honestly just want to give him a big hug. We as readers know they will be perfect for each other, but it’s getting them there that is what this book is about. Dual point of view. SJ also includes scenes with our favorite characters from Shane and Mason. I can’t say enough wonderful things about the book. No cliffhanger. Une prostitu�e, Lizzie Mac Cay, se voit brusquement confront�e � un N�gre qui lui demande de lui accorder sa protection. Il est en effet poursuivi pour le meurtre d'un blanc, Thomas. Il s'av�re que le N�gre n'est pas l'assassin de Thomas, et pourtant � la fois la police et la famille Clarke vont essayer d'extorquer une fausse d�position de la part de Lizzie. La brusquerie et la vulgarit� dont Fred et le S�nateur Clarke traitent Lizzie et le N�gre sont r�voltantes. On ne peut qu'esp�rer que les choses ont �volu� en Am�rique depuis l'�poque o� Sartre a �crit cette pi�ce de th��tre, peu apr�s la Seconde Guerre Mondiale.

His new book takes up where the previous work left off. Examining the question of what to eat from the perspective of health, this powerfully argued, thoroughly researched and elegant manifesto cuts straight to the chase with a maxim that is deceptively simple: Eat food, not too much, mostly plants. But as Pollan explains, food in a country that is driven by a thirty-two billion-dollar marketing machine is both a loaded term and, in its purest sense, a holy grail. The first section of his three-part essay refutes the authority of the diet bullies, pointing up the confluence of interests among manufacturers of processed foods, marketers and nutritional scientists—a cabal whose nutritional advice has given rise to a notably unhealthy preoccupation with nutrition and diet and the idea of eating healthily. The second portion vivisects the Western diet, questioning, among other sacred cows, the idea that dietary fat leads to chronic illness. Berkeley, California-based journalism professor and New York Times Magazine contributing writer Michael Pollan, whose previous work on the subject includes The Botany of Desire and the best-selling The Omnivore’s Dilemma, has placed himself at the forefront of food writing. He preaches a back-to-basics approach and a close questioning of the avalanche of information that has come out of our diet-obsessed society. Despite the accusations of a few critics as being a little alarmist, a little elitist, and a little obvious (not everyone has the access to or the resources to eat the food Pollan suggests), the book encourages a simple approach to eating that will strike a chord with readers weary of conflicting information and unrealistic weight-loss and wellness programs. So the message of the book and its well-written delivery can’t be faulted. The question is, do we need to hear it all again?

A life changing book...

I have a medical and science background...so traced references cited....everything checks out. Recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis at age 63 and weight 284 pounds. Read this book the first week of January.....went shopping for real foods the second week of January. Find it satisfying to eat no more than 4 oz of red meat 2-3 times a week....salmon, mackeral, sardines 2-3 times a week....and a couple of days with no meat...just veggie omega 3 sources. Have re-read the book....highlighted...added notes on all pages...and bought 2 more copies for my 30 and 21 year olds...both who grew up in the age of "nutritionism" with all its false information. Following Pollan's common sense advice....paying the extra for organic basic veggies and olive oil. Decided to eliminate all wheat and corn until I loose the weight I've set as a goal.
Five weeks eating 3 meals a day...and by week two much of the chronic 24 hour a day pain was gone and I began walking the elliptical and the woods. Five weeks and 30 pounds lighter....with more energy than I've had in 20 years. Buy this book, learn it, live it, tell your loved ones.

One of the best reads ever for me--better than "Ominovores Delima"

One of the best reads ever for me--better than "Ominovores Delima", or "Good Calories, Bad Calories". This is a small and concentrated book, but reads and enters the mind like oiled silk. Truly made me stop and ponder and rethink so much of our culture and our relationship with food--and this from an individual on a low carb high fat diet, who cooks twice daily. I can only think how much more it could do for those with more mainstream and processed diets...!

Eat like Grandma would

"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly Plants."

There you have it. That is the book for you in seven short words. The author even admits it on the first page!

There is more detail for those interested. The author gives some more practical dieting advice like: eat more folic acid, take Omega 3 supplements, eat fish at least twice a week. However, a substantial part of the book is devoted to describing all sorts of corporate spawned nutrition crazes that have not served public health well, and have basically made the Western diet a global laughing stock. Being that my mom was an agricultural engineer turned nutritionist, none of this was really news to me.

But hey I get it, the man has a book to sell and it probably serves him and his publisher to water down the content for the sake of more pages. The reason for the three stars, is more so for the constant derailing of corporations in this book. The guy definitely has a leftish bent and his biases spill into what should be a book free of political prejudice.

Corporates don't force anyone to chow down on Oscor Meyer sausages and Big Gulp drinks. They simply sell the option and the people willfully choose to do so. Salad has been around since the dawn of time, it's cheap, anyone can afford to eat it, but people make the choice not to. Unfortunately, you cannot democratically protect people from their own ignorance. If you could, most of our social problems would go away.

The true reason for mass obesity in this country has more to do with structural changes with the way people live their life. We went from working on farms to corporate cubicles and service orientated jobs. This change happened in what, a measly 150 years? Which on an anthropological time scale is nothing. The reason why we are fat is because our bodies are unaccustomed to living in the present reality. We eat fast food, come back from some job which requires minimal physical activity, chow down on some microwavable food, and then spend the rest of the day watching television. I believe the author tries to make this point, he cites Australian aborigines as an example, however he does not make it clearly enough and as mentioned previously, he has plenty of space to do so.

The actual nutritional advice in this book is great. I decided to take up Pollan's advice along with giving up sugar as a Lent penance and can proudly say that I lost around 10 pounds (190 to 180, Male). It is great advice, just very hard to follow!

Fantastically realistically beautiful

I have a passion for applique, especially realistic flowers, plants, birds, animals....nature in general. This is a book that I immediately used for a wall hanging which while not yet complete promises to be a truly gorgeous piece of art. The directions and patterns are clear and I have had no problem in creating beautiful flowers from this book. It gets a prime place on my bookshelf!

What a beautiful, well written book. I have been quilting for years yet I learned several new techniques. The flowers are so realistic you would think you could pick them. Instructions are made simple enough for someone who is beginning to learn appliqu�, yet there is an abundance of techniques to keep the experienced quilter engaged. Well done!

Trying to explain a major disease to a child is difficult and this book is very helpful. Whether your child is 4 or 12 this book proves to be a good starting point to get the conversation started with making kids fearful.

Great - easy and simple

I have ms and I have an almost 6 yr old who is showing signs of being effected by it even though I do everything I can do shield her from it she still is aware. The book was simple and didn't scare her - we often repeat a page - when mommy isn't feeling well what does the giraffe do? Rest mommy now go take a nap.
