The Dangerous Summer, by Ernest Hemingway

The Dangerous Summer is Hemingway's firsthand chronicle of a brutal season of bullfights. In this vivid account, Hemingway captures the exhausting pace and pressure of the season, the camaraderie and pride of the matadors, and the mortal drama as in fight after fight the rival matadors try to outdo each other with ever more daring performances. At the same time Hemingway offers an often complex and deeply personal self-portrait that reveals much about one of the twentieth century's preeminent writers.

About the Author
Ernest Hemingway did more to influence the style of English prose than any other writer of his time. Publication of The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms immediately established him as one of the greatest literary lights of the 20th century. His classic novella The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. He died in 1961.

From the Introduction

This is a book about death written by a lusty sixty-year-old man who had reason to fear that his own death was imminent. It is also a loving account of his return to those heroic days when he was young and learning about life in the bull rings of Spain.

In the summer of 1952 Life magazine headquarters in Tokyo dispatched a courier to the front lines in Korea with an intoxicating message. After prowling the mountainous terrain along which desultory action was taking place, he found me at a forward post with a small detachment of Marines.

"Life is engaged in a tremendous venture," he told me in conspiratorial whispers. "We're going to devote an entire issue to one manuscript. And what makes the attempt so daring, it's fiction."

"By who?"

"Ernest Hemingway."

The name exploded in the cavelike foxhole with such force, such imagery, that I was instantly hooked. I had always admired Hemingway, considered him our best writer and certainly the man who had set free the English sentence and the crisp vocabulary. As I wandered about the world I constantly met foreign writers who went out of their way to assure me that whereas they considered themselves as good as Hemingway, they did not want to mimic him. They had their own style and were satisfied with it. And I began to wonder why they never said: "I don't want to write like Faulkner..." -- or Fitzgerald, or Wolfe, or Sartre, or Camus. It was always Hemingway they didn't want to copy, which made me suspect that that's precisely what the lot of them were doing.

If you had asked me the day before that meeting with the Life man I'd have said: "I admire Hemingway immensely. He gave us all a new challenge. But of course I don't want to write like him."

The emissary continued: "With so much riding on this experiment Life can't afford to take chances."

"On Hemingway? How could you lose?"

"Apparently you haven't been following the scoreboard. The critics murdered his last offering."

"Across the River and Into the Trees? It wasn't too hot. But you don't condemn an artist for one..."

"That's not the point. They not only blasted the novel, which was pathetic, but they called into question his legitimacy, his right to publish any further."

"I can't believe that."

"Didn't you read that savage burlesque of him and his novel? That hurt."

"I missed it, being over here. But you can't burlesque a man unless he's very good to begin with...unless readers are so familiar with his work that they catch the jokes. You don't waste your time teasing a nothing."

"This wasn't teasing. This was a thrust at the jugular."

"Hemingway probably told them to go to hell."

"Maybe, but he was deeply hurt. And Life is painfully aware that the attacks cast a shadow over whatever he publishes next." The man paused to study the battlefield in front of our dugout, then came to the point: "We have one hell of a bundle -- money, prestige -- riding on this one-shot issue."

"Why come to see me?"

"We want to present the story in the best possible light."

"What can I do? I don't know Hemingway."

"Do you respect him?"

"He's one of my idols."

"That's what the editors hoped." He looked me in the eye, then said: "They want you to read the galleys...make up your own mind...no pressure from us. And if you like what you see, give us a statement we can use in nationwide publicity."

"To what purpose?"

"To kill any lingering reminders of those savage reviews. Knock in the head suspicions that the old man might be through."

"Tell me the truth. Have you asked other writers better known than me? Have they refused?"

"I really don't know. But I do know the editors think that your approach to war and the role of men makes you eligible. Also, they think readers will listen."

"Is Hemingway in on this?"

"He would be mortified if he knew we thought he needed help. He'll know about it when he sees the copy."

The decision was easy and automatic. I assured the emissary that I would read the manuscript, praying that it would be good, and if it was I would not hesitate to say so boldly. Because a writer just getting into his career asI then was rarely has an opportunity to pay tribute to one of the masters.

"Guard this with your life," the emissary said. "This is the only copy outside New York. And if you decide to make a statement, get it to us in a hurry." Placing the rather frail parcel in my hands, he nodded, warned me not to leave it where others might spy, and left to catch the Tokyo plane.

The next hours were magic. In a poorly lighted corner of a Marine hut in a remote corner of the South Korea mountains I tore open the package and began reading that inspired account of an old fisherman battling with his great fish and striving to fight off the sharks which were determined to steal it from him. From Hemingway's opening words through the quiet climaxes to the organlike coda I was enthralled, but I was so bedazzled by the pyrotechnics that I did not trust myself to write my report immediately after finishing.

I knew that Hemingway was a necromancer who adopted every superior Balzacian trick in the book, each technical device that Flaubert and Tolstoy and Dickens had found useful, so that quite often his work seemed better than it really was. I loved his writing, but he had proved in Across the River and Into the Trees that he could be banal, and I did not want to go out on a limb if he had done so again.

But as I sat alone in that corner, the galleys pushed far from me as if I wished to be shed of their sorcery, it became overwhelmingly clear that I had been in the presence of a masterpiece. No other word would do. The Old Man and the Sea was one of those incandescent miracles that gifted writers can sometimes produce. (I would learn that Hemingway had dashed it off in complete form in eight weeks without any rewriting.) And as I reflected on its perfection of form and style I found myself comparing it with those other gemlike novellas that had meant so much to me: Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome, Joseph Conrad's Youth, Henry James's The Aspern Papers, and Faulkner's The Bear.

When I had properly positioned Hemingway's tale among its peers I hid the galleys beneath my bedroll and walked out into the Korean night, agitated by this close contact with great writing, and as I picked my way across the difficult terrain I made up my mind that regardless of what critics sager than I had said about Hemingway's previous fumbles, I would have to flaunt my opinion that The Old Man was a masterpiece, and to hell with caution.

I am embarrassed to state that I have no record of what I actually reported. My judgment appeared in full-page ads across the country, and I think I said something about how happy writers like me were that the champ had regained the title. No one reading my words could doubt that here was a book worth immediate reading.

At any rate, Life used my statement enthusiastically and paid me, but what I didn't know was that while their Tokyo agent was handing me my top-secret copy of the galleys -- "the only set outside New York" -- Life was distributing another six hundred sets to opinionmakers across the United States and Europe, each one top secret and unique. When the issue containing Hemingway's novella appeared during the first week of September 1952, it was already an international sensation. One of the cleverest promotions ever orchestrated had resulted in immediate sales of 5,318,650 copies of the magazine, the swift rise of the book version to head the best-seller list, and a Nobel Prize.

Hemingway had won back the championship with a stupendous ninth-round knockout.

The success of this daring publishing venture had a surprising aftermath. Life was so pleased with its coup that the editors decided to try their luck a second time, and when they cast about for some writer who might do another compact one-shot, they remembered the man who had stuck his neck out when they needed a launching statement for their Hemingway.

Another emissary, this time from New York with lots of corporate braid, came to see me, in Tokyo I believe, with a dazzling proposal: "We had such an unprecedented success with The Old Man that we'd like to go back to the well again. And we think you're the man to do it."

"There aren't many Hemingways around."

"On your own level you might do it. You understand men in action. You have any stories in the back of your mind?"

I have always tried to answer such questions forthrightly. I love writing. I love the swirl and swing of words as they tangle with human emotions. Of course I had a dozen ideas, most of them worthless when inspected closely, but a couple of them seemed to have real staying power.

"I've been doing some combat flying over Korea..."

"At your age?"

"And a lot of patrol work on the ground. I see certain big outlines."

"Like what?"

"Like it's perilous for a democracy to engage in war without declaring war. Like it's morally wrong to send young men into action while old men stay home and earn a bundle without any war taxes or deprivations. And it is especially wrong to call a few men arbitrarily into action while allowing others just as eligible to stay home free."

"Would your story be beating those drums?"

"I don't beat drums."

"Write it. I think we might have something."

Driven by a fire I had rarely known, and excited by the prospect of following in the shoes of Ernest Hemingway, I put aside all other work. On 6 July 1953 Life offered its second complete-in-one-issue novella, The Bridges at Toko-ri. This was less than a year after the great success of The Old Man and, as before, the editors protected themselves by asking another writer to authenticate the legitimacy of their offering. This time they chose Herman Wouk to say good things, and although I cannot remember what I said about Hemingway, I recall quite clearly what Wouk said about me: "His eyes have seen the glory." That became the sales pitch this time, but a friend of mine writing a r...

Bullfighting through the eyes of Hemingway
By Linda Linguvic
Considered literary non-fiction, this is the account of the 1959
season of bullfighting in Spain and the intense competition between
two competing matadors for the glory of that season. It is his last
major work at age 60; he killed himself the following year.
In an
introduction by James Mitchner, it is explained that this piece was
commissioned by Life Magazine. The assignment was for Hemmingway to
revisit the bullfights he had written about in his classic novel
"Death in the Afternoon" published in 1940. Hemingway was
supposed to write 10,000 words for the article. Instead, he submitted
120,000 words. It was edited down to 70,000 words and ran in three
installments.
This book I read, however, was only about 45,000 words
and focuses specifically on the particular contests between two
competing matadors who happened to be brothers in law. Hemingway had
a personal relationship with both of them and brings the reader to the
dinners and the parties as well as to the infirmary after a goring,
the painful healing process in Spanish hospitals that do not
administer painkillers, the long rides on bad roads between bullfights
and the dirt and heat and fatigue and glory.
I have not read much of
Hemingway and knew nothing at all about bullfighting when I started
reading. Yet, by the end of the book a portrait of the author emerges
as well as an understanding of the history, tradition choreographed
performance of skill that occurs in the bull ring. Somehow, I was
able to move beyond my personal feelings about the slaughter of the
bull, and get into the mindset of Hemingway and the people of Spain,
where bullfighting is a national passion.
It has to do with courage.
And it has to do with facing death.
Hemmingway said it all it better
than I ever could:
"This was Antonio's regular appointment with
death that we had to face every day. Any man can face death but to be
committed to bring it as close as possible while performing certain
classic movements and do this again and again and again and then deal
it out yourself with a sword to an animal weighing half a ton which
you love is more complicated than facing death."

Last Hurrah for Papa
By Diego Izurieta
Fortunately I had read Death in the Afternoon before absorbing this last encore. By the end, I was attached at the soul to both matadors, (Cain and Abel!?). I wish I could read the other 50,000 words edited from this work. Papa described everything that was behind the fragile curtain of honor, bravado, showmanship, and the pageantry of bullfighting. Like many musicians or athletes of our time, we cannot observe from behind the scenes all the work, travel and lack of sleep that these people go through, therefore we cannot fully appreciate the bullfighters of the "Lost Generation". I recommend this book to anyone who wants to experience this true American literary icon and Spanish culture and History. It is interesting to see the way Spain has changed over the years. This book is full of magic and it describes the drive and mild competitiveness that all men and women should have inside in order to suceed in today's harsh world. The introduction of James A. Michener is beautifully written by someone who knew Spain. The terms are helpful to any who is not familiar with basic bullfighting. This is one of Papa's most under-appreciated least-recognized works, but that's ok with me.

Don't ever go to a bullfight without reading this book first
By A Customer
I should have read this chronicle of bullfighting before my college semester spent in Madrid. I did not read it and instead, I sat in the bleachers of the arena completely disgusted, wishing for the first time in my life that I was at an American football game instead. I was so ignorant that I almost felt tempted to run down and let the pathetic black creature loose, like some rebel animal rights person in a research lab. Back then, I did not understand the history, tradition, glory and sentimentality that belongs to bullfighting. I was ignorant and should not have gone to the bullfight without reading this chronicle by Hemingway first. Now, I some day plan to return and to watch another bullfight. I know now I will see a completely different sport; and not really a sport but a performance. I once thought bullfighting was a battle between man and beast. After reading The Dangerous Summer I know it is a choreographed performance of skill, wisdom, experience and bravery. I urge anyone who plans to go to a bullfight, to read this first. Do not judge this Spanish tradition until you first understand what it is about.

From Publishers Weekly
A young girl's experience of the Nazi pogrom in her Polish hometown is related with an immediacy undimmed by time in her autobiography. In 1942, the author and her family undergo a brutal separation. Thirteen-year-old Alicia escapes her captors, fleeing through fields and woods, encountering fellow refugees and occasionally finding safe harbors. Although she sees her mother's wanton murder and endures physical and mental deprivation, the teenager is supported by faith in family and in the goodness of people. Capable of rallying others, she eventually heads a group who settle in Palestine. In 1949, she marries an American in Haifa and moves to the United States. Long and on occasion rambling, her story contributes to an infamous history as a tale, not only of survival, but of active resistance to oppression. Major ad/promo.

From Library Journal
A Polish Jew, the author re-creates her efforts to survive in Nazi-dominated, war-torn Poland. Between the ages of ten and 15, she suffered terrible hardships and encountered numerous brushes with death. This is a potentially useful addition to Holocaust literature, for although she never experienced the death camps, Appleman-Jurman lived in constant peril and managed to survive only through an extraordinary combination of luck and street sense. Unfortunately, the heavy use of dialogue reconstructed more than 40 years later has an unsettling effect on the mood and plausibility of this interesting and frequently horrifying survival narrative. Still, public libraries should consider. Mark R. Yerburgh, Trinity Coll. Lib., Burlington, Vt.

Review
Alicia Jurman was born in Buczacz, Poland, in 1930, the daughter of orthodox Jewish parents. Alicia's family had a long history in Poland; her father ran a successful mercantile business which supported the family comfortably, and the Jewish population was large and close enough to create culture, community, and a sense of security for Alicia and her three brothers. Racist anti-semitism was a fact of life the family almost learned to ignore until 1938, when the Germans invaded Poland and occupied Buczacz and one brother was killed. In 1939 the Russians drove the Germans out; another brother died. In 1941 the Germans returned; within a year, Alicia was the last living member of her family. In compelling detail, Alicia describes hiding in fields, finding food, narrowly escaping from prison and firing squads, helping others escape, searching for survivors of her family. Written in straightforward, non-political, and graceful narrative, this is the story eleven-year-old Alicia swore she would someday tell: "Through the story of 'Alicia' I wish to reach out, not only to survivors like myself, but to all people. ... I believe that the book will teach young people what enormous reserves of strength they possess within themselves." -- For great reviews of books for girls, check out Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14. -- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Jesse Larsen

A gripping view of WW11 experiences in Poland
By TCW
I have read on the order of fifty Holocaust survivor stories, maybe more. This was written by a very unusual survivor. Someone who lived among the population, sometimes Free & on occasion i prison. Her interactions with a wide variety of people from various attitudes and cultures makes it an interesting novel.

Instead of individual survival, Alicia also spent much of her time caring for others along the way. She shows great thoughtfulness and maturity during a time when I'm sure she would have preferred to have a life provided for her. She is honest about the mistakes she makes and the consequences. She admits when things just happen to go a certain way for no decernable reason.

Beware, it is not a book where everything turns out alright. Alicia experiences greasing and continuing losses as her life is pulled from like the removal of finger and toenails. She is a passionate young lady who fights against the odds. She does not give up.

This book is a very gook peak into Poland's people's and events during WW11. It can be upsetting. You need to be able absorb the blows, admitvthey were, everyone of them, horribly unjust, and realize they are being repeated today in Syria. This is what is perhaps disturbing. Despite our knowledge and acknowledgment of the "mistakes" (WAY too mild an adjective) of the past we blindly repeat them again and again.

Regardless of where you are coming from on this and other issues, this is a fascinating book that will keep you hooked like a great suspense novel. I invite you to learn new things in one of the more enjoyable ways by reading about the lives of those who experienced the events first hand. From the trees, we can begin to understand the forest. (But we cannot build the forest from these singular trees, we use them to better see the true nature of the forest).

BUT would someone write a memoir like this if it were not true
By Pattycat Meyer
This was a phenomenal memoir! As others have said, different from a lot of survivor memoirs because this young girl, at such a young age, was a hero over and over, in so many incredible situations, it was almost unbelievable. BUT would someone write a memoir like this if it were not true? I don't think so. The author shares what life was like in Poland before, during and after WWII. I have struggled my whole life to come to an understanding of how people (Not just Hitler and his SS and soldiers) could be so cruel. I've yet to have even a glimmer of understanding. I do thank God that some Jews were left to share the history. For 45 years I read these stories, to honor those who died and to honor those who survived. Alicia I send you my love; I'm so happy that you were able to write this book.

New Truths of the Holocaust
By Wade D Stringer
I have long been obsessed with the plight of the European victims of WWII. Until I read this book, I knew little of the plight of those who escaped the confines of the concentration camps. I now know that there were hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Jews who experienced terrible deprivation, and constant fear, extraordinary courage and, for many, death. It is beyond me how they survived at all. But to hear this story of a young woman and her years of strength, compassion and undying sense of "right", putting herself in the place of caring for and literally saving others, most of whom she had never previously known, is both heart-rending and inspiring. Great read. Fours stars only because there were places where typos were disruptive, and lack of good proofreading is a personal pet peeve.

'All too often, Karl Marx has been regarded as a demon or a deity - or a busted flush. This fresh, provocative, and hugely enjoyable book explains why, for all his shortcomings, his critique of modern society remains forcefully relevant even in the twenty-first century.'
Francis Wheen, author of Karl Marx

In recent years we could be forgiven for assuming that Marx has nothing left to say to us. Marxist regimes have failed miserably, and with them, it seemed, all reason to take Marx seriously. The fall of the Berlin Wall had enormous symbolic resonance: it was taken to be the fall of Marx as well as of Marxist politics and economics.

This timely book argues that we can detach Marx the critic of current society from Marx the prophet of future society, and that he remains the most impressive critic we have of liberal, capitalist, bourgeois society. It also shows that the value of the 'great thinkers' does not depend on their views being true, but on other features such as their originality, insight, and systematic vision. On this account too Marx still richly deserves to be read.

Good Critical Primer on Marx
By Jon Thomas
I agree with Wolff that reading Marx is very worthwhile. While Marx was in error, I believe, in more than a few of his conclusions, it is amazing that he got so many things right. His and Engels' early understanding of the business cycle would be worth studying them for that alone. Marx's use of class structure in analyzing society politically and economically is also difficult to rationally refute. Class power is the underlying basis of our political and economic structure. Anyone denying that reality either lives in a cocoon, suffers from a severe mental handicap, or is on the payroll of the American Enterprise Institute, Heritage Foundation, etc.

His historicism derived conclusion about the inevitability of Communism does not wear well. Nor does his surplus labor value theory of value gain a whole lot of adherents. Additionally, his rather utopian view that most of humanity's problems would dissolve with the advent of Communism does not appear to have much credibility. Humanity is most certainly a rather difficult and cantankerous lot. Market systems need reform and regulation. Substitute command economies cannot provide adequate pricing mechanisms. The conservatives are right on that one. However, in the cases where there is real monopoly and excessive industrial concentration, government intervention in terms of breaking up the behemoths or nationalizing them appear to be the only practical alternatives.

A good book. It is a little short, and bit too pricey at $20. However, it is definitely a worthwhile read. It's a good primer for the uninitiated and also a good refresher for some of the initiated.

strong overview
By A Reader
This is a nicely written book that gives a strong over-view of Marx and makes a reasonable case for his continuing importance. It neither deifies nor makes a monster of Marx, and does a good job of showing what's useful and what's not in his thinking. I give it only four stars only because it does not really break new ground, but rather does a fine job of summing up the strongest readings of Marx.

A great primer on the timeless philosophy of Karl Marx
By N. Tsafos
This seems like a very fair question-why should anyone bother to wrestle through the endless volumes of Karl Marx's prolific work? After all, communism died with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the demise of the Soviet Union; and, there are few economies today who would abandon the market and mimic the Soviet Union's state-planning.
In this short volume, Jonathan Wolff, of University College London, tries to convince us that studying Marx is worth the time and effort. He does this by analyzing in-depth Marx's entire range of philosophical pursuit-from his thoughts on religion to the "Jewish Question" to the more familiar writings of "The Capital" and the "Communist Manifesto."
This intellectual trip is elegant, well-written, and surprisingly dense. It will certainly appeal to those with little or no background on Karl Marx; it will also likely fascinate veterans of Marxist thinking since Mr. Wolff's reconstruction and assessment of Marx's writings is both trenchant and comprehensive.
What, in the end, of the central question? The case for reading Marx is partly historic since his influence over the twentieth century is towering. But at a more fundamental level, Marx's philosophy is not about communism; in fact, Marx devotes little time analyzing why or how communism would come about and work. Marx's writings are a critique of capitalism and its salient features based on his account of human nature and history. So communism might have died in 1989, but Marx's ideas live on.

From Publishers Weekly
This mega-selling twosome (Hansen's name is on every book in the Chicken Soup series and Allen wrote the bestselling real estate guide No Money Down) offers a long-winded pep talk on how just about anybody can make big money. According to the authors, "At this very instant you are standing in the middle of millions." They maintain that anyone can achieve "enlightened" wealth, a utopia where everyone has money and tithes, creating a better world for all. Hansen and Allen's approach is a mix of self-help and money talk, though a bit heavier on the former. The left-hand pages are a simplified explanation of how to amass millions, with options such as write a book, buy and sell real estate and start a company. The right-hand pages illustrate the same themes, via fictionalized dramas, e.g., newly widowed Michelle's struggle to come up with $1 million in cash to get her two children back from her in-laws. Hansen and Allen's feel-good suggestions run along the lines of "find a mentor," "use a fulcrum" and "be part of a team." Full of endless acronyms (e.g., "System: Save Your Self Time Energy Money"), catchy phrases (e.g., "A Dream + A Team + A Theme = Millionaire Streams") and animal imagery (butterflies, honeybees, owls and hares scamper among the pages), this offering echoes much of the self-help cacophony already out there. But its message is muddled: sometimes the millions are yours for the asking, and sometimes it's the system that keeps you down.

From Booklist
Hansen is the co-creator of the hugely popular Chicken Soup for the Soul series; Allen is a mega-best-selling personal finance author of titles such as Nothing Down (1990). They have combined forces to produce this step-by-step guide for becoming a millionaire in a short period of time. In an unusual format, the right-hand pages depict the fictional story of Michelle, a lowly waitress and mother of two who breaks out to pursue her dream of creating her own business and owning income-producing real estate. The left-hand pages are organized into what the authors call Millionaire Minutes--short lessons for becoming an "enlightened millionaire." Although they offer some suggestions on how to go about this, the lessons consist mostly of trite inspirational phrases and affirmations such as "you are your wealth," "clarity is power," and "I think like a millionaire." There are short sections on the power of leverage, networking, and systems thinking, and some specifics are discussed, such as 11 nothing-down techniques, but on the whole, it's a very brief overview with many suggestions and very little practical advice on how to carry them out. It's all just too easy, and the story of Michelle does little to improve the situation as it is quite tedious and unremarkable. Nevertheless, insipid inspiration sells. Between them, the authors have sold more than 80 million books, and this one will only boost that total. David Siegfried

Worst Get Rich Book Ever
By Amazon Customer
Let me summarize their get super-easy get rich "ideas"

1. Just invent something that everyone will buy!

2. Just write a best selling book!

3. Just spam a hundred thousand people selling a product, like an e-book that cost you nothing to make, but your time, and sell it for $1,000, and you'll get your million! They repeatedly use 1% spam response rates, though it's more like .0037% spam rates, I already know their solution, SPAM MORE! If you haven't got any spam from "Richard G Allen &/Or the one minute millionaire, you will!!!

4. Just look through the newspaper and find foreclosures on some unsuspecting little old lady, and be nice to her and help her get kicked out of her house, and you swoop in and take it, and all it's equity, paint it and sell it for twice as much!

5. Invent a toy that every kid wants, like tickle-me-elmo!

6. Look for run-down houses that are worth millions and millions of dollars and haven't sold for a long long time, and ask obscenely low prices, and they'll take it, because agents have to, and since the owners are rich and don't care about money....

These are just some of the ideas that I remember from this awful book. The spam one makes me furious, they are ENCORAGING SPAMMING!!! The other ideas are so stupid, write a best seller, invent something that every American home needs, well FREAKIN DUH! It VERY soon become apparent that the authors are just looking to make THEMSELVES RICH, with a catchy title, and some VERY OLD, VERY TIRED, VERY WORN OUT - OVERDONE Ideas. Like that foreclosure thing. That's older than I am. sheesh. This book has nothing creative, attempts to teach unethical and unrealistic ways of "getting rich" which they focus on spam is the way to get rich in the "one minute" time frame. Like any idiot is going to drop a grand from a spam they got 10 seconds ago. I did read this whole book, just looking for any kind of redeeming factor. None. This book is great for a laugh, and to inspire fury against the authors. I don't usually every write reviews, but this one... inspired me with disgust! This book is an entire waste of time, and I can't believe they must have had good marketers that this book is in the library, etc. I think this is the worse "get rich" book I have ever read.

All the real self help/get rich type books ALL go back to Napoleon Hill. Think and Grow Rich is his best seller. If you are looking for the "secret", start there. Read everything he has, and then read everything his disciples have written (Tony Robbins, Jim Rohn, Zig Ziglar, Dale Carnegie, Earl Nightengale, & Other stuff by Robert Kiyosaki & Thomas J. Stanley PhD, William D. Danko, and you will then have the correct foundation for success. Hey if you've read these and agree with me, yet feel I am missing a few good gems, please email me! I'm always looking for some more good stuff.

THE handbook on creating wealth-CARPE DIEM
By A Customer
Multiple Streams of Income is the best results oriented financial book since Charles Givens More Wealth Without Risk with the advantage that MSOI has even more income producing strategies than Givens.
You find find everything you need to know to create cash streams. You will learn how to invest profitably, use Cooper Covered Calls, trade options successfully, invest in real estate, tax liens and discounted mortgages as well as start your own super successful networkmarketing business on a shoestring and create wealth on the internet.
Regarding the 1 star reviews and other reviews "warning" about this book and the techniques, take it for what it's worth. As far as I am concerned, their advice is worth about a nickel, if that. This guy (it really is only one person with a agenda) has way too much free time and perhaps makes too much money spamming and selling names.
Robert Allen on the other hand will teach you how to use the internet profitably and with integrity.
Great book Robert.

Healthcare Social Media: Transformation 3.0, by Gary W. Lawson DPA

While other industries have embraced social media, healthcare is still lagging behind. A widespread misconception among practitioners is that social media has only one function—the recruitment of new patients. This is a limited view preventing professionals from tapping into social media’s true power.

In Healthcare Social Media, Gary W. Lawson, DPA, argues that to stay ahead of the competition, healthcare providers need to continuously reevaluate the role technology plays in their practice. Social media tools can maximize quality of care, improve patient outcomes, record patient progress, streamline collaboration among colleagues, and increase profits.

Owner of Lawson Social Media, one of the largest healthcare social media companies in Southern California, Lawson guides healthcare professionals through the pervasive and sometimes confusing world of social networks, demonstrating the advantages they bring to an industry moving toward evidence-based modalities and more affordable care.

From Publishers Weekly
This practical guidebook to business concepts is appropriately straightforward in its approach. Kurtzman, a former New York Times reporter and editor of the Harvard Business Review, explains that the volume is "organized to reflect the way normal people do and think about business." Kurtzman identifies "big ideas" as concepts that... reduce the fog of complexity into something simple, solid, tangible, and most of all workable." Not so much a nuts-and-bolts guide to business, this volume focuses on ideas and takes readers through the process of innovation, the fundamentals of sustainability, finance and accounting, and the intricacies of strategy and management. Kurtzman explains that his book can be read either from cover to cover or thumbed through whenever answers to questions about a creative concept are needed. The book addresses such topics as human resources, leadership, marketing, communication and learning from slip-ups (both one's own and those of others). Lending extra credibility to the volume is an impressive roster of contributors, including Michael Milken, 3Com founder Bob Metcalfe, Segway inventor Dean Kamen and Harvard Business School dean Kim Clark, each writing about his or her area of expertise. In keeping with Kurtzman's philosophy of business (it's "one of life's great games, and it is exhilarating"), the book makes for a refreshing and often humorous read. Whether the book's marketing concept (the "box" of the title is actually a slip-case) and high price point will attract readers is left to be seen.

From Booklist
Former New York Times reporter Kurtzman, who has written seven previous books on the markets, big business, currencies, and the economy, is also founding editor of Strategy and Business and editor of Harvard Business Review. Here he has assembled some thoughts from the best minds in business into a practical resource for solving problems and generating new ideas. The more than 35 contributors include Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway human transportation device, who talks about how new technology becomes significant only when it turns into the Big Idea, which happens when people start doing something they've never done before and find they can't live without it. The 1980s bond king Michael Milken discusses how corporate finance is more an art than a science; journalist Victoria Griffith has two articles--one discusses how biotechnology companies innovate, the other the implications of electronic communication within organizations; and, finally, Sam Hill brings his unique perspective on branding to the table. All the pieces are both pointed and concise. David Siegfried

Essential Business Information & Diversity of Perspectives
By Robert Morris
In recent years, there have been several excellent books which cover much of the same material found in this volume. For example, Steven Silbiger's The Ten-Day MBA: A Step-By-Step Guide To Mastering The Skills Taught In America's Top Business Schools and Milo Sobel's 12 Hour MBA Program. (Both Silbiger and Sobel know it's impossible to gain the knowledge-equivalent of an MBA degree in 10-12 months, much less in 12 hours.) Each of the their books is worthy of consideration as is this book. In fact, at least to business students and to relatively inexperienced executives, I presume to suggest that all three be purchased and then kept near at hand for frequent consultation.

Throughout history, all of the the most effective people were/are life-long learners. They fully appreciate the importance of knowing what they need to know; also the importance of knowing what they think they know...but don't. As a result of all manner of new/better technologies, we now have access to more information than ever before...and both the quantity and quality of that information seem certain to increase faster than ever before. What we know as well as knowing what we don't know are critically important. I am reminded of Derek Bok's response to irate parents after a tuition increase at Harvard: "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance."

In collaboration with Glenn Rifkin and Victoria Griffith, Kurtzman takes a different approach to various subjects than do Silbiger and Sobel. They provide a specific course of self-directed sequential study whereas Kurtzman provides a series of separate but related chapters, each of which focuses on fewer specific subjects but in greater depth and from several different perspectives. Although I recommend that Kurtzman's book be read sequentially the first time, its greater value may derive -- for many readers -- from its discrete coverage of those subjects of most immediate relevance. Obviously, completing an M.B.A. degree program requires a much greater investment of time, concentration, energy, and (yes) money than does reading one or even several books. Even an excellent volume such as Kurtzman's cannot replace that program, nor does he assert or even imply such a claim.

Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Silbiger's and Sobel's books as well as Business: the Ultimate Resource, Stuart Crainer's The Management Century as well as his The Ultimate Business Library: The Greatest Books That Made Management, Des Dearlove's The Ultimate Book of Business Thinking: Harnessing the Power of the World's Greatest Business Ideas, Daniel A. Wren and Ronald G. Greenwood's Management Innovators: The People and Ideas That Have Shaped Modern Business, Daniel A. Wren's The Evolution of Management Thought, (4th Edition), and The Leader's Companion: Insights on Leadership Through the Ages (Thomas Wren, (Editor). In fact, every organization should have an in-house lending and/or reference library and these are among the titles which should be included.

Inadequate
By Clovis
I acquired this book as a referesher subsequent to completing my MBA program. It is a suprising disappointment, and I do NOT believe it is an "MBA in a BOX" by any stretch of the imagination. I am somewhat reluctant and uncomfortable to speak negatively about any book I have read, and I have read plenty of books and review a fraction of them on Amazon.com. Nevertheless, I have a sense of obligation to tell people that this book will most-likely not provide them the information they are perhaps looking for in terms of MBA material. To try to be perhaps fair, I am going to highlight some important aspects in this book.

Innovation

--

The concept, from Clayton M. Christensen's THE INNOVATOR'S DILEMMA, "that companies fail not because managers are dumb but because the system doesn't allow them to succeed" is very important as it touches on empowerment, organizational learning, and team building (and learning).

Strategy

--

Yes, I agree that strategic thinking involves intuition and creativity. I am very happy that the balanced scorecard was covered in this book, which is an excellent tool for organizations to measure performance.

Management

--

Encourage entrepreneurial behavior and thinking. Ensure your team is actually empowered to make decisions, take action. Otherwise, how can you possibly encourage entrepreneurial behavior and thinking in an organization?

Human Resources

--

The importance of retaining and motivating the "knowledge worker" is covered, which is a concept from Peter Drucker. Organizations must appreciate, recognize, and understand a knowledge worker's extensive knowledge. Further, an organization must also provide opportunities for the knowledge worker to expand her/his knowledge, thereby adding value for the organization.

Marketing

--

I enjoyed reading about customer relationships management (CRP), allowing the customer to frame and shape the relationship between the organization and her/himself.

CONCLUSION

--

As I mentioned, this book did not meet my expectations and was somewhat disappointing. I think the title is not appropriate and perhaps even misleading. Nevertheless, if you want to obtain some highlights on certain subjects and prominent business personalities, this book can be useful.

Fine essays, very misleading title
By Roy Massie
MBA In A Box is a collection of essays written by business experts. The concepts and terminology frequently assume you are already reasonably familiar with business concepts.

For example, one of my favorite essays in the book is a republication of a Harvard Business School article (mid 90's) on the failure of Strategic Planning as it has been taught to generations of business school grads (especially MBAs). Terrific article, but it would really help to already be exposed to Strategic Planning (flawed as it is). This article helps with MBA background more than some of the others, but is still a critique of an MBA topic as opposed to a introduction.

Since I got the book wanting a survey of MBA knowledge, I have some disappointment with it. I definitely learned from it, but having a controversial genius like Milken do the chapter on Capitilizing a Corporation was over my head in several places. The Finance and Accounting chapter was more of what I expected, as it described the traditional role and current firestorm around the role of the CPA - educational and up to date.

If you are a seasoned business person, the book may be interesting to you as a light collection of essays from illuminated business minds. I am not quite that far along, but I gained from reading the book and may read it again one day. I've deducted from the rating of these quality essays because the title is so misleading - an obvious ploy to grab attention irrespective of the content. The ploy worked on me and I'm a little better for it, but it is still a cheap ploy.

For MBA beginners-surveyors like me I recommend The Complete Idiot's Guide to MBA Basics. It's a very basic, yet useful, intro.
